ASSESSMENT WEEK FOR GRADES 9 TO 11

“The IB Career-related Certificate (IBCC) is a new qualification that increases access to an IB education and is de-signed to provide a flexible learning framework tailored by the school to meet the needs of students. It incorpo-rates the educational principles, vision and learner profile of the IB into a unique offering that addresses the needs of students who wish to engage in career-related education. The IBCC encourages these students to benefit from elements of an IB education, through a selection of two or more Diploma Programme courses in addition to a unique IBCC core, comprised of an approaches to learning course, a reflective project, language development and community and service.” (http://www.ibo.org/ibcc/) .

Greenfield Community School (GCS), one of the Taaleem Schools, offers the IBCC Programme. The IBCC Coordinator of GCS will come to JBS on Tuesday February 12th to do a presentation on this programme from 8am-9am. Parents are invited to attend this session, particularly those of grade 9 and 10 students. A session about IBCC will also be given on the same day to our grade 10 students.

The Grade 7-11 students have a unique opportunity to see ‘Shakespeare’s Globe to bring Globe Education’s produc-tion of Romeo and Juliet,’ at the Madinat Theatre in Jumeira on February 27thth. We will leave JBS at 8.15 hours and expect to be back by 11.30 hours. The students need to wear correct, tidy school uniform and should bring a healthy snack with them. In English, all students will study drama and Shakespeare, so an opportunity to watch a live production of a Shake-spearean play will greatly enhance their understanding of what we will learn in class. Students will be asked to re-flect on their understanding and impressions of the play after the trip. The cost to go on this trip is 130AED. The deadline to submit the signed permission form and the money is on Sun-day January 13th. Permission forms have been handed out to the students. If you have any questions about this trip, please contact Ms. Rogland at [email protected].

On the 19th of December, we all were herded into the gym at the start of period 8. It didn’t take much persuasion, because we were all excited to watch the staff play basketball against the students. I was eager, coming from the ACC area in the US and missing our tournament season, but everyone wanted to see their friends score against their teachers. Of course, in the beginning most of us weren’t optimistic about the chances of our peers coming out victorious. Sure, most of the students were good players, but what chance did they have against Mr. Spencer who was scoring during warm-ups from 50 ft. away, or Ms. Asad, who was scoring multiple layups in a row?

The game was entertaining to watch, with the score first leading on one side then the other. Our 9th grade score keepers, Bridghid and Maha, had to be attentive to keep track of who to give points; and our amazing referee Mr. Housley managed to be unbiased, despite being a teacher himself.

There were strong players on both sides. Mr. Smith and Ms. McCabe were the giants on the teachers’ field, constantly stealing the ball from their opponents. On the students’ side I want to acknowledge Kimberlee and Saria, the only girls brave enough to be on the team.

The Students’ had a great defense with Adam and Abdulla (aka the really tall people) man to man, and their offense made up of Kareem, Ghaith, and Ben. The teachers’ defense was made up of Mr. Spencer and Ms. McBrierty who were able to grab quick rebounds. Also no one can forget how Mr. McMahon managed to throw a free-throw backwards and score!

Ms. Elkady ended the game with the final score 19 on both sides. The audience demanded a tie breaker, but we will have to wait for another time. Who will come out the victor…we will just have to wait and see.

STUDENTS CORNER

Two grade 6 students demonstrated their entrepreneurial skills, whilst fulfilling their C&S requirements. Alia Ibrahem and Amina Abdel Bari raised 240 AED for the Palestinian’s Children Relief Fund by selling their wares at the JBS Winter Market. Their handmade bracelets and bookmarks were popular with the festive crowds, and now, thanks to their efforts, our friends at PCRF have benefited from extra funds to begin the New Year. Well done to Alia and Amina! Perhaps this will encourage other students to be creative when it comes to fulfilling their C&S, whilst also helping a good cause!

Alia Ibrahem Amina Abdel Bari

JBS congratulates Abhinav Das of Grade 10, whose personal project has been selected by Reed Exhibitions to be showcased in the upcoming World Future Energy and International Water Summits in Abu Dhabi on January 15th. These summits are organized by Masdar and aim to encourage students to showcase their environmental

sustainability solutions. The goal of Abhinav’s project was to investigate the feasibility of using solar panels in

residential areas within the UAE. He did a lot of background research and interviewed people from DEWA and representatives from companies that design/product technologies used for alternate energy. He presented his findings in a report that reflects a lot of in-depth analysis and research. JBS congratulates Abdulla Salem for addressing the G6-8 students in an assembly to raise awareness for Multiple Sclerosis as part of his personal project. He also invited Dr. Suzan Noori, a Neurologist at Rashid Hospital and a leader of the first UAE National MS Campaign-Task Force Committee to present to our students about this unrecognized disease.

THE DESERT CLEANUP

A group of 20 JBS students participated in the Desert Clean-up, which was organized by the 'Emirates Environmental Group'. This is an issue of global importance because the desert is an ecosystem and part of the UAE environment, which has to be clean and free from anything that may harm the local animals and plants. Before hand, we were given T-shirts and gloves for the event. When we got there, the desert was pretty clean, so it took us some time to find anything to pick up, but a few plastic bottles. However, in the end, we made up for it by finding a discarded pipe that needed a large group to carry! We worked together to achieve that task. Everyone was amazed by the size of the 'monster pipe' and were taking pictures of us. We received a lot of congratulations and applause. All in all, I enjoyed this activity and was happy to have a positive impact on our environment. By Ali Ibrahem—8J

On 12th of December, I volunteered to clean up the desert at the Emirates Environmental Group event, which was unnecessary because there was nothing to clean! When we reached the desert, we were so excited with our plastic bags and awesome big, gloves and then went to clean but realized that there was nothing for us to clean. So my classmates and I decided to go far to see if there is something that we can clean. Two of our classmates went somewhere close by and found a huge orange pipe. All seven of us were thrilled to help carry the pipe. We saw the “paparazzi” taking pictures of us and expected to see ourselves on the newspapers but… nothing! Finding and moving that pipe used up a lot of our energy. It was time to leave so we ate some apples, drank some water, and got on the bus back to JBS. I have to say that day was awesome, we definitely didn’t fill up our bags, but we found the biggest piece of junk and that was important. I will never forget this trip ever and hopefully next time we visit, there will be something more to clean up! By Carmel Mahdi - 8J

THE DESERT CLEAN UP ON DEC. 12, 2012

The day of the Desert Clean Up was exciting because we were doing something new on a school day. Everyone involved was wearing the same thing, so we don’t differentiate between people and schools. I liked how the hats where distributed, so we didn't have to worry about bringing one. When we reached the desert we had to be good representatives for our school, since the majority of the people involved were from the wider community. We each got given a black plastic bag. We used phones to communicate with one another which I thought was really smart, since the desert didn't have much in it, and we could have easily gotten lost. We also gave ourselves a specified area and checked up on one another every 20-30 minutes to make sure everyone was okay. We had breaks which allowed us to have some bananas, apples and croissants. We decided it would be mature of us to leave the desert a bit earlier than expected. This was because there was not that much pollution in the desert itself, and with all the people we actually managed to clean up a lot. I really did enjoy this event. It maked me realize how most of the people there were committed to keeping Dubai clean. By Natalia Boustani - 8B
