Geldtekort: buurtwag skaal afANNETTE THERON
Teenmisdaad-werk in Botrivierhet ’n terugslag ervaar.
Pastoor Michael Olivier, voorsit-

Schools urged to enterfood gardens competitionLocal schoolswith food gardenscan get themselves in the run-ning for a share of R275 000 incash prizes. That is if they enterthe biennial EduPlant competi-tion before the end of May.
“EduPlant, initiated in 1994, ispart of Food & Trees for Africa’ssolution to global climate changeand food security.“We are now calling on schools
to submit their entries into thisyear’s competition; to share withus their innovations and achieve-ments in their school food gar-dens,” says Joanne Carty, Edu-Plant programme manager.Climate change is a serious risk
tovulnerable communities andsixof the eight threats recently high-lighted by a team of scientists thatgathered in Japan.Severe weather events, such as
those experienced in late summerthis year, can destroy crops andlead to hunger and famine.Schools thatapplypermaculture
principles are better able to with-stand such events and maintainfood security, and help to prevent
debilitating nutritional deficien-cies such as kwashiorkor.Long-term droughts can bemiti-
gated by planting trees and usinginnovative methods such as greywater harvesting; this is particu-larly important for the westernparts of South Africa, where smallchanges in weather patterns canhave devastating consequences. For two decades the EduPlant
team has supported the develop-ment of sustainable food gardensandgreening.EduPlanthashelpedschools and their surroundingcommunities to create abundantgardens with year-round harvestsusing permaculture practices.“We are very excited to see this
year’s entries,” says Carty aboutthis year’s competition.“Lastyearwe focusedon impart-
ing valuable in-depth permacul-ture knowledge via national clus-ter workshops so we are anticipat-ing a higher standard as well asmoreentries thisyear, resulting inthemore stable food securityat theschools.Over the past 20 years we have
seen the impact and value of
schools learning from each otherat the finals event.”The winners of this year’s com-
petitionwill be able to send one ed-ucator on a two-week course thatwill provide vital skills to build ontheirschools’ successesandenablethem to cascade their skills to thesurrounding community.Sixty finalist schools stand to

Predators welcome at CreationANNETTE THERON
Creation recently became thefourth farm in the Overberg thatis predator-friendly in support ofthe Landmark Foundation.
Thiscomesafterthreeleopards – amom and her two cubs – were seenin the Hemel en Aarde Valley in De-cember last year.
In linewith theirnewstatus,Crea-tion also joined in the World EarthDay celebrations on Tuesday 22April by hosting an information ses-sion on the farm.
The guest speaker was JeannineMcManus, researcher and field
worker from the LandmarkFoundation. McManus is a PhD stu-dent at Wits University who is doingher research on broad leopard con-servation, from the impact of landuse and genetics to habitat corridorsand the conservation economy.
McManus said they are trying togive more momentum to awarenessefforts, “because it’s really worryinghow endangered these species are”.
The leopards spotted in Decemberhavesincedisappearedfromtheareaand it is unclear where they are cur-rently roaming. There are four otherleopards in the Hemel en Aarde Val-ley and a further 12 who roam all theway to Cape Infanta.
The Landmark Foundation is anon-profit organisation. It is run-ning a number of projects aimed atproviding research information thatwill create incentives to invest in thelong-term conservation infrastruc-ture of the country, changing think-ing and behaviour towards the issueof conservation.
McManus said the organisationserves as a voice for animals, andthey are lobbying for gin traps to beoutlawed.
According to the Landmark Foun-dation’s website, www.landmark-foundation.org.za, leopards havebeen collared in its study area since2007.

Greyton bids to befree of plastic bagsGreyton Transition Town haslaunched a campaign to be the firsttown in South Africa to be free ofplastic shopping bags.
“Over the years I have watchedresidents becoming more and moredistressed about our dumpsite, theamount of litter in our streets, andthe general ‘toss it away and forgetabout it’ attitude that is a symptomof a more profound sense of discon-nection from our planet,” saysNicole Vernon, chairman of Grey-ton Transition Town (GTT).
The Plastic Bag Free Campaignaims to rid the town of single useplastic shopping bags by NationalPlastic Bag Free Day on 3 July.
Among the multitude of problemsplastic bags have led to are litteringin the streets, ingestion by livestockand leaching toxins into the envi-ronment.
Vernon says plastic bags are alsoa significant threat to marine life.“Billions of bags end up in theoceans where they contribute to themillions of marine animals estimat-ed to die each year from plastic in-gestion or entrapment. This is whyour campaign has been given fullsupport by the Two Oceans Aquari-um in Cape Town.”
Apart from the environmental illsassociated with plastic bags, GTThave also found them to be uneco-nomical.
“Some of our members noted thatit is the poorest of our communitywho continue to use these bagswhilst the more affluent are morelikely to use a long-life shopping
bag. The 50c charge at the till for aplastic bag has become so insidiousthat shoppers don’t realise they arepaying it,” she says.
“We have asked some of our poor-er members to calculate how muchthey spend on a plastic shoppingbag, and they were shocked to real-ise that it can amount to as muchas R25 per month.”
GTT introduced the idea of a plas-tic bag free town to the communityabout 18 months ago.
From the community’s feedback,GTT realised that finding an accept-able alternative bag was critical tomoving the project forward.
“Wetriedmakingthemlocallybutthe cheapest we could make wouldcost R20. After months of searchingwe recently found an ideal source –colourful, attractive, very sturdy,long-life bags for only R4 includingVAT and postage to Greyton.
“Five outlets are selling them inGreyton and more are coming onboard. We’ve ordered our third lotof 1 000 bags so now around 2 200have been sold” she said.
Hayley McLellan, campaign di-rector of Rethink the Bag at the TwoOceans Aquarium, mobilised sup-port for the initiative by making apresentation to local shop ownersand their cashiers.
Thepresentation inspired severalshop owners who are showing theirsupport by selling the bags at closeto cost price to encourage their cus-tomers to embrace the change.
Vernon hopes the initiative willinspire other South Africans.
“We are publicising ourattempt to become the firstplastic shopping bag freetown in South Africa soothers can learn from usabout what works and whatdoesn’t.”

MAD stands for “Make A Differ-ence” and two separate successstories converged over the East-er weekendwhen two junior soc-cer teams met each other on thesoccer field.
The Super Puma Strikers fromNapier and the Bredasdorp-basedWhite Spurs clashed in an openingmatch on the soccer field at theGlaskasteel sport complex inBredasdorp on Easter Monday 21April.Both Jeremy Davids and Ernest
White, the respective team manag-ers and mentors, have effectivelymade a difference in the lives ofthese kids since they decided to fol-low their dreams in 2010 whenWorld Cup fever hit the country. What separates these two teams
and these twomentors from others,is the fact that they have been fol-lowing their dream to really “makea difference” in the lives of childrenby teaching them in a sustainableway how to keep themselves busyconstructively. The 2014 MAD Easter Soccer
Tournament was hosted for the sec-ond consecutive year by the CapeAgulhas Academy. This year around, a development
component was added by makingprovision for youth teams to com-pete in addition to the senior teams. It was only fitting that the two
youth teams, having played theirhearts out, should end up with onegoal each: Super Puma Strikers 1and Bredasdorp White Spurs 1.In 2010 many soccer balls and T-
shirts were distributed all overSouth Africa, and in the Overberg, but very few soccer initiatives havesurvived theproverbial test of time. These teams, however, are re-
garded as an example of howyoung-sters kan be kept off the streets andconstructively occupied.
This, however, requires the rarequalities of hard work, persever-ance and dedication, according tothe two coaches. The original junior members of
both these teams have alreadyjoined the ranks of the senior play-ers and both these teams are con-stantly receiving requests fromyoungsters who also want to be-come involved. Why? It is clear that they lead by
example.

Outrageous TWK budget for GreytonOutrageous TWK budget for GreytonTheGreyton Ratepayers and Residents As-sociation (GRRO) has objected to the pro-posed Theewaterskloof budget for the 2014-2015year in the following letter toStanWal-lace,TheewaterskloofMunicipalManager:Dear Mr WallaceRe: Proposed 13.1% Rates Increase.Greyton Residents and Ratepayers Or-ganisation would like to make it clear thatwe are very strongly opposed to the pro-posed 13.1% rate increase TWKM is plan-ning to impose on all ratepayers. This is way above the government guide-line figure of 6%. We feel there has beenlittle attempt by yourmanagement to fulfiltheMTREF requirement that “municipali-tiesmust justifyintheirbudgetdocumenta-tion all increases in excess of the 6% upperboundary of the South African ReserveBank’s inflation target”. Simply to statethat what you have done “is in the best in-terest of themunicipality” is not sufficient. As a small town within the Theewaters-kloof,Greytonhasalargenumberofretiredcitizens living on fixed incomes. With an-nual inflated rates increases, residents arestruggling to bear this ever increasing bur-den.Ratepayingcitizensare earnestlyque-rying the quid-pro-quo they are receivingfor their exorbitant rates. With a Greyton
payment ratio representing approximately15%of the total TWKMrates collectionbill, the ratepayers are receiving only 0.88% ofthe proposed capital budget for 2015. Thesedisturbing figures speak for themselves inshowingtheenormousdemandsthemunic-ipality isplacingon itsGreytonratepayers.Few of those ratepayers object to subsidis-ing the poor to a generous degree but notto the exclusion of aminimumexpenditureon vital infrastructure. It should also not be forgotten that Grey-ton is amajor provider in themunicipalityof tourism-based employment which couldeasily dwindle without the necessary rein-vestment.It is of great concern to GRRO that thecontinuous high turnaround of propertiesin Greyton may well be the result of Grey-ton being perceived as an overpriced andunder-funded area. This trend is likely tocontinue until the municipality realisesthat the demands that they have put ontheir reliable ratepayers are becoming in-tolerable.We urge TWKM to investigate all otheralternativemethods toraise the finance, in-cluding liquidating excessmunicipal prop-erties.

We are a directionless lot, are we not . . .?And they call it progress! This past week has been fraught withthings automotive; on the eve of several cru-cial events and journeys two modern motorcars let me down. The first one to fail was the one with themost important, namely ferrying a youngmother, her three-yearold twinsandtwosau-sage dogs some 450 km down the coast. Twodays before departure this electric-mechani-cal marvel suddenly got hot under the cover.Ever helpful, the father and grandfather(me), bolstered by years of experience in fix-ing cars, attempted to cure this Italian arte-fact of a severe case of incontinence. In attempting this, I made a useful if some-what sobering discovery: modern cars aremade to be irreparable. My firstmistakewasto assume that a leaking hose could be re-movedbyunscrewingtwoclampsandreplac-ing it.Wrong! The clamps can only be removedby destroying the hose and part of the radia-
tor.The upshot of this bit of Latin chicanerywas having to spend almost R2 000 on a newradiator instead of R150 on a new hose.Got the job done in time for the Great Exo-dus though, without having my admirationfor the country that produced Michelangeloand Leonardo da Vince enhanced in anysense.Mynextdisappointment came fromamoreunexpected quarter, Germany. The problem was simpler, cheaper to fixbut in a sense more irksome than the first. It involved the car suddenly losing the willto signal its topographical intentions.(Vul-garly put, its flickers broke).Again I attempted the classic cure, whichI remember checking the fuse and the “unit”.Wrong again! It proved impossible to tracethe errant devices and I finally summonedprofessional help. It cost onemanwith subtleand ingenious devices to divine the aberra-tionandreplace themalingeringcontraption

Crime robs us all;Crime robs us all;let us take back ourlet us take back ourstreets and villagesstreets and villagesOur daughters were with us this weekendwith their small children and a German ex-change student who is in matric at a CapeTown school. On the afternoonofGoodFriday, one of our
daughters went for awalkwith her baby, hernephew, aged six, and the teenager fromGer-many.They took the twodogswith themandwent
up to the pine forest on the Beaumont landbehind the Eskom houses.Along the way, the teenager remembered
thatshehadleft thedog’s leashataspotwherethey stopped to take photoswith a cell phone. Our daughter waited in the shade of the
pine trees with the sleeping baby, and theyounggirl and the six-year-old child, whohaswalked in the forest with his grandfathermany times, ran back to fetch the leash.Itwas justashortdistanceawayandwithin
a few minutes they were on their way backto the pine trees.Suddenly, ahead of them on the path, a
young, slightly builtman appeared. He askedwhere theywere going, walked past and thencrept up behind the young girl, thrust a longstick over her head, across her throat andpulledherdowninto thebushesalongside thepath. The small boy began screaming at the top
of his lungs and the attacker made off withthe expensive new Samsung cell phone thegirl had put in her back pocket. Terrified, thechildren fled from the forest and ran hometo get help. The positive side is that the young girl was
muggedandnot raped. Iuse thewordmuggedadvisedlyafterconsulting theOxforddiction-ary,notwishingtooverstateorunderplaytheevent,whichwasreportedimmediately to thepolice. They responded to the call for help in less
than ten minutes.Three farmworkers who live at Papgate al-
so joined in the search for the woman andchild who were still missing in the forest butwho returned safely shortly afterwards. Butneither they nor the police found the culpritand to date the cell phone has not been recov-ered.The theft of the cell phone was the least of
what was stolen. Our daughter heard the screaming and
then silence and went looking for them, notknowing what had happened or what dangerthere was for her sleeping child. The young girl from Germany who had
come to Bot River to experience the charmof country life, was traumatised by this as-sault.Who will blame her when she goes home
in June and tells her family and friends whata bad destination South Africa is? Perhapsshe has, already, on Facebook.Butworsebyfar is theeffectonthesix-year-
old.His greatest thrill on his visits to Bot River
was togowalking in the forestwithhisgrand-father and the dogs.SinceGoodFridayhehas refused to goany-
wherewith them.Healsosleepswith the lighton and wakes screaming several times atnight. He begs us never to talk about what hap-
pened to him in the forest again.I think themoral of the story is that we are
all robbed when a crime is committed.Robbed of our peace of mind, our innocence, our belief in the good of others. If we want to address crime we should sup-
port our local neighbourhoodwatch, bemorevigilant about our safety at home and in openspaces, report any and all crime incidents tothe police and take a stand as a communityagainst the tik dealers and the smokkelhuise, which operate with impunity in the Over-berg.Perhaps we won’t solve the problem but at
leastwe’llbedoingsomethingtowards takingback our streets and villages. In closing I want to encourage all victims
of crime tomake a case, nomatter how smallthe incident.Take care.

Sien udan. – Charlton Smith
