Job Seekers Continue to Flock to WillistonWilliston Economic Development | Barb Peterson

Job Service North Da kota (jobsnd) continues to set new records at its Wil-liston office. Jobsnd is nearly twice as busy this year com-pared to 2012. The increase is both online and in the Williston location.“Companies registering on the Job Service ND site is almost double from last year,” says Williston Customer Service Manager Cindy Sanford.Sanford says an average of 56 job openings were posted each day in March. There are currently 478 job openings in the Wil-liston area;; but the numbers can change hourly as more jobs are add-ed or f i l l e d . Some of the po-s i t i o n s are filled immedi -ately, she says.T h e j o b s n d w e b s i t e a l l o w s business-es to list openings and re-cruit em-ployees.“Compa-nies have the abili-ty to post jobs and s e a r c h o v e r 13,000 re-sumes on the sys-tem to as-sist with their hiring needs. “The http://jobsnd.com/ website receives over 125,000 hits a week!” Sanford exclaims.Job seekers also continue to pour into the Williston office. Sanford says they often help more than 100 job seekers be-fore noon weekdays.“We have seen over 2,100 job seekers from April 1st to April

23rd,” says Sanford. “Job seekers are from all over the US with skills as varied as the numbers.”Sanford says what’s trending now is that more people are look-ing to stay in western North Da-kota long-term.“We are seeing more job seekers interested in making the Bak-ken home,” says Sanford. “We are also seeing an increase in the number of job seekers from out-side of the US.” Williston Economic Develop-ment assistant director says the

oil and gas industry is still growing;; which is driving the need for workers.

“Our recent job fair re-flects the o n g o i n g a c t i v i t y trend. We saw a sold out venue of over 110 e m p l o y -ers seek-ing to fill over 1,500 job posi-tions,” says S h a w n Wenko.S a n -ford says j o b s n d continues to see a mix of oil-field and n o n - o i l -field job postings. In March, 54 oilfield employers listed 225 openings

in Williston while 106 non-oilfield employers listed 336 po-sitions.According to Wenko jobsnd lists about a third of the total job openings in the Williston area. He says there are an aver-age of 1,200 positions open on a daily basis.

“ We are seeing more job seekers interested in making the Bakken home,” says San-ford. “We are also seeing an increase in the number of job seekers from outside of the

US.”

The push to Keep Williston Clean

Build a Better Tomorrow Campaign

Keep Williston Clean, Citywide Cleanup, Cleanup Willis-ton Day – it goes by a lot of names, yetthe purpose and goal on April 27th is the same.“It doesn’t matter what it’s called, as long as the trash gets picked up,” said Dan Manjack, chair of the Clean City Committee.

At the request of Williston Mayor Ward Koeser, Manjack and others are once again organizing a citywide effort to

pick up garbage along the major streets in and through Williston, as well as parks, schools and other public loca-tions. Saturday, April 27 is the spring date for the second annual event (﴾a cleanup event was held in the fall last year as well)﴾ with interested volunteers being asked to meet at 8:30 a.m. at the Aafedt Stadium parking lot. In 2012, nearly 2,000 “official” volunteers participated in the Keep Williston Clean spring activity.

And if this year is anything like last year, the cleaning won’t all happen just on Saturday the 27th. Organizers expect a lot of people, groups and businesses will find time over the next two weeks to become “unofficial” volunteers in working toward a cleaner city.

“Last year when this first really started there were business-es who really embraced this type of service, brought out all their employees to clean, but chose to do so the Friday be-fore the big push,” said Manjack. “Which is great because then all the people that would drive by would catch the spirit, so to say, of cleaning and I think that helped us get such good participation.”

HOW IT WORKS

It’s not too complicated to organize a real cleanup effort. In 2012, the City Clean Committee divided Williston’s major roads into 25 sections and assigned a volunteer group or business one of these roadways. With the encouragement to be careful around traffic, wear gloves and have fun, the

rest is simple.

“We have an enormous return on our efforts,” said Man-jack. “For the relatively small nucleus of organizers, to get thousands of volunteers to simply pick up garbage is amazing.”

Along with picking up hundreds of bags of garbage, the City will open up the landfill to allow individuals to dump

residential garbage for free, from 7:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. As well, this year Pacific Recycling is opening their doors that Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with special pricing on certain recyclable items. They are located at 13818 West Front Street.

This year, with an expanded area to cover, Manjack plans on dividing Williston roads into 40 sections to provide good coverage. He said there will be a free lunch provided by Target Logistics to workers at 1 p.m. at Davidson Park. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, the Clean City Commit-tee will push the cleanup back to Saturday, May 4 at the same time and place. Manjack hopes to continue growing the Keep Williston Clean event every year, with potential ideas like “Adopt a Street,” where cleanup isn’t just one day or one week a year, but ongoing and focused on residential streets. He would also like to find a formal way to give some added recogni-tion to the many businesses who donate food for the free lunch, promote the event through their company or find other ways to truly embrace the idea of a clean city.“Really, there are so many people who care about this town, it’s just wonderful to see the participation and excite-ment,” said Manjack.

Top remodel trends for the modern home

Contributed | BMT

Thanks to foreclosures and short sales, home buy-ers are snatching up great houses at reduced prices and remodeling to create stylish modern homes. Lucky for those buyers, many of today’s top trends are relatively easy to recreate, and will add re-sale value to their homes.

“TV interior design shows are mostly about buying and remodeling a home, versus building from scratch or finding a new property that precisely fits a wish list with plenty of personal requirements,” says Dani Kohl, program coordinator for the bachelor of science in in-terior design program at The Art Institute of Indianap-olis and a practicing architect and interior designer.

THE TOP REMODELING TRENDS INCLUDE:

* Uniting the kitchen and living space for an open-floor concept

* Culture dictating an increase square footage for entertain-ment, haven from a busy work schedule or modern luxuries

* Finding multi-functional uses for both spaces and furniture

On average, Kohl’s residential clients are spend-ing about $40,000 to $60,000 to renovate and re-model their homes. Most of the money is spent in the kitchens, master bedrooms and bathrooms.

“Gone are the days of the formal dining room and living room,” says Kohl. “Walls are being knocked down to join the two rooms.”

Parents want to be able to cook while watching kids do

homework or entertaining guests. Kitchen islands most often serve as the main division between kitchen and liv-ing space, and are the entertainment centers of a kitchen.

“Kitchen islands are looking more like free-standing furniture pieces with elaborate marble tops and wood work, and interior designers are often finding functional yet hidden places to store the trash can and keep the dish washer from view,” Kohl says.

Pedro Lima, an interior design instructor at The Art In-stitute of New York City and owner of Pedro Lima Interi-ors, says that temporary partitions between the living space and kitchen are also on the rise. These partitions can be of varying heights, whether it’s a two-way fireplace or modern book shelving. Partitions are a great option for homeown-ers who want that open-floor plan for the kitchen and liv-ing room, while still maintaining a defined space for each.

Lima says that our current culture and habits are driving the changes in modern, interior spaces.

“When it comes to the master bedroom, we are look-

ing at a more pampering atmosphere,” he says. Both Kohl and Lima agree that clients want more of a spa-like feeling than ever before to create a bedroom that is a safe haven for over-worked homeowners.

“Master bedrooms now have their own seating ar-eas and entertainment nooks, and have become per-sonal spaces away from everything,” Lima says.

An increase in square footage for closet space is another popular request, according to Lima. “We, as designers, are now looking into proper modular systems of rods and shelving, in addition to our architectural and design duties.”

Closets are not just for storage anymore, either. “Now, we’re looking at closets to serve as a dressing space in addition to serv-ing as a place to store an increased amount clothes and shoes.”-

How are clients gaining square footage for the needs of today’s residential space without making a com-plete renovation and creating add-ons to their homes?

Lima says that downsizing to accommo-date upsizing is part of the remodel plans too.

“Designers are spending more time at looking for innovative ways to add versatile furniture that serve multifunctional purposes,” he says. “For instance, coffee tables also serve as storage spaces and additional seating, wall units have built-in desks, and couches open up to beds in home offices.”

Whichever remodeling trend homeowners choose to apply, all trends point toward integration, simplifi-cation and organization, as homeowners seek to en-joy their homes and share it with family and friends.

Celebrate the grads in your life with financial gifts

Do you have a child in your life who will be graduating this spring?

Whether it’s from kindergarten or college, graduation marks the completion of one chapter in a young person’s life and the start of a new adventure. Honor your grad’s achievement by helping him or her save for the future with a digital U.S. Savings Bond.

“Graduation season is a time of celebration and great pride for families. In preparation for this milestone achievement, we encourage parents to consider opening a Treasury-Direct account for their child within their own primary TreasuryDirect account, so the gift of savings bonds can be given by relatives or friends who want to contribute to a young grad’s future,” says Jerry Kelly, national direc-tor of the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Ready.Save.Grow. campaign.

Savings bonds are a great gift choice for a child of any age. They’re a low-risk way to save, and offer steady accumulation of interest.

Additionally, interest earned from savings bonds is exempt from state and local income taxes, and may also be exempt from federal income taxes when used to pay for qualified higher education expenses.

If there’s a special child in your life, read on for helpful infor-mation about gifting savings bonds.

OPENING A TREASURYDIRECT ACCOUNT

Parents - need help setting up a TreasuryDirect account for your child? If your child is under the age of 18, you’ll first need to establish your own account, then open your child’s account within your account.-

TreasuryDirect is the Treasury Department’s secure, online system where you can safely buy, manage and redeem digital savings bonds and other Treasury securities.

Ready.Save.Grow. provides information and tools to help people sign up for a TreasuryDirect account, including a tip sheet and a guided tour, at www.treasurydirect.gov/readysavegrow.

After your TreasuryDirect accounts have been opened, your child is ready to receive digital savings bond gifts for birth-days, graduations and other special events.

GIVING A DIGITAL SAVINGS BOND GIFT

Consider contributing to a child’s college fund or other financial goal with a digital savings bond gift bought through TreasuryDirect.

The first step in giving a savings bond as a gift is having the gift re-cip-

ient’s name, Social Security num-ber and TreasuryDirect account number.

Ready.Save.Grow. offers resourc-es to help you give a savings bonds gift in TreasuryDirect, including a graphic that walks you through the most important steps. You can also print out a step-by-step tip sheet and watch an overview video. Visit www.treasurydirect.gov/readysavegrow to access these tools. -

Commemorating the occasion with a gift certificate

TreasuryDirect.gov offers a variety of themed gift certificates for grad-uation, birthdays, holidays and other events. Simply print your favorite and present it to the gift recipient in a card or envelope to signify your savings bond gift.

Harvick wins Richmond on dramatic restartContributed | Reid Spencer, NASCAR Wire Service, NASCAR.com

K evin Harvick sped away on fresh tires to win Saturday night’s Toyota Owners 400 in a green-white-checkered finish at Richmond International Raceway, leaving a group of drivers with widely diver-gent emotions in his wake.

Harvick beat Clint Bowyer to the finish line by .343 seconds to win his first NA-SCAR Sprint Cup Series race of the season, his third at Richmond and the 20th of his career.

Joey Logano ran third, Juan Pablo Montoya came home fourth after leading until the final caution and Jeff Burton finished fifth after staying out on old tires for the final two-lap run that took the event six laps beyond its posted distance.

Harvick came to pit road for tires on Lap 396, after Brian Vickers slapped the wall in Turn 3 to cause the 11th caution of the race. Harvick’s No. 29 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet made short work of the three drivers who had stayed out after the race restarted on Lap 405.Though Montoya lost the chance to break a 94-race drought since his Cup victory at Watkins Glen in August 2010, Montoya was elated just to get a top-five finish after struggling mightily for more than a year. Not so elated were Kurt Busch and Tony Stewart, who repeatedly swapped shots with their Chevrolets on the cool-down lap. Stewart was fifth on the final restart but dropped to 18th at the finish after Busch rubbed him out of the racing groove during a two-lap free-for-all that saw prolific contact throughout the field.Harvick, however, was all smiles when he climbed out of his car in Victory Lane.“My car launched, and I was able to drive it in the first corner and hope for the best down there,” said Harvick, who surged into the lead through Turns 3 and 4 after establishing his position in the first corner on the final restart. “I figured four, eight, 12 ... (however) many tires that were on the outside of me would be better than none. It all worked out, and here we are.”

The decision to come to pit road for tires under the final caution was a no-brainer, as Harvick and crew chief Gil Martin saw it.“When the tires fall off almost two seconds, you’ve got to come in and get tires,” he said. “There’s not very many guys that stayed out. It all worked out tonight. We’ve been on the other side of it this year, so to be in Victory Lane is great.”

Bowyer led 113 laps but didn’t have a car that could stay with Har-vick at the end.“We had a good car -- we just didn’t have a great car,” Bowyer said. “It seemed like we were just too tight on the throttle. … It really got wild there at the end. I was just lucky enough to be on the bottom (for the final restart).

“They started making holes up there in front of me, and the seas parted, and I just followed suit behind Harvick. It was a good run.”

What was a two-man battle for more than half the race evolved into an unpredictable nexus of varying strategy and unexpected attrition. When Kyle Busch passed Matt Kenseth for the top spot on Lap 254, that was the first time all evening that a driver other than Kenseth or Bowyer had led a lap. Busch made it stick, leading 39 straight laps under green until Travis Kvapil smacked the wall on Lap 292 to cause the sixth caution of the night.

Kurt Busch beat brother Kyle in the race off pit road under the yellow and led the field to a restart on Lap 299. Busch held the point during an intense battle against Carl Edwards until NASCAR called the seventh caution on Lap 308 when Kvapil’s car dropped fluid on the track.

Kurt Busch, Edwards, Kenseth and Ryan Newman stayed out under the yellow on 16-lap-old tires. Jimmie Johnson paced

the rest of the lead-lap cars to pit road and took two tires. Six laps after a re-start on Lap 321, the entire tenor of the race changed dramatically.

After contact with Martin Truex Jr.’s Toyota on the restart, Johnson faded on the restart. Running to the inside of Johnson on entering Turn 1 on Lap 327, Stewart slid sideways into Johnson’s Chevrolet. As Johnson slid to the inside of the track in Turn 2, Kyle Busch’s Toyota nosed into him.

That was just the start of frenetic action at the .75-mile high-speed short track. Montoya led a pack of six cars who stayed out under the caution to a restart on Lap 334, but on Lap 338, a brutal wreck off Turn 2 involving Mark Martin, Kasey Kahne and Vickers slowed the field again.

One lap after a restart on Lap 344, Truex spun in Turn 3 while battling Kurt Busch in close quarters for the second position.

Montoya retained the lead until Vickers’ wreck on Lap 395 set up the overtime.Notes: Despite Johnson’s troubles, the five-time champion gained ground on his closest pursuers in the standings with a 12th-place finish at RIR. He now leads second-place Carl Edwards (sixth Saturday) by 43 points and Kahne and Dale Earnhardt Jr. (10th at Richmond) by 46… Reigning Cup champion Brad Keselowski finished 33rd on the bottom end of a roller-coaster day that saw him recover from a scrape with the Turn 2 wall only to drop a cylinder in the late going.

your taxes.

ARIES (MAR 21 – ApR 19)Despite your recent soaring successes, you may feel frus-trated by a lack of progress on Monday. Perhaps finan-cial issues aren’t moving quickly enough for you and are causing angst. You’ll soon develop a practical plan that

enables you to move ahead. You might be busy working on a new contract or lucrative deal that could be perfect for you, but once again, patience may be needed when formulating the details. You’ll eventually get to a place

where it all comes together.

TAURUS (Apr 20 – May 20)You seem to be in your element, although you might feel

blocked by someone’s refusal to cooperate or see your viewpoint. Monday could be difficult in this respect, but

it isn’t worth forcing the issue. Focus on what you can achieve, which may mean organizing your finances in

order to study or travel. Use your current resources as a springboard to greater things. You may encounter more

resistance from someone later in the week. Sidestep it and concentrate on the positive. It will melt away.

GEMINI (May 21 – Jun 20)You might need to get a health issue checked earlier in the week, especially if you feel tired and generally lacking in energy. You need to pace yourself in general and not try to take on more than you can easily accomplish. De-sires may be strong and should be linked to important goals as a way to channel potent energies. Notice where your passions and heartfelt needs lie, as this may give a clue to the next step on your path.

CANCER (JuN 21 – Jul 22)Your social life looks promising and very upbeat, which is great for dating, networking, and having a good time. Don’t be so caught up in yourself and your moods that you refuse an invitation, especially early in the week. Be willing get over your problem and get out of your own

way. Something special may happen as a result. If you’re in a committed relationship, there is plenty of potential to enjoy life. Singles could get involved in intense situa-

tions with promising romantic outcomes.

lEO (Jul 23 – Aug 22)Home and career matters may need equal amounts of attention, which could take your focus off your primary goals. You may feel deeply frustrated on Monday as attempts to get ahead could be offset by additional responsibilities at home. It helps to go with the flow and do as much you can without worrying about it. There are possibilities for getting ahead at work and showing just how capable you really are. Attention to detail may earn you praise or even a future promotion.

VIRgO (Aug 23 – SEp 22)You could be suspicious of someone’s motives when

the person may be trying to help you. Reconsider your opinions on Monday. You could be sabotaging your

own success by stubbornly blocking out someone’s sug-gestions. Meanwhile, your strength of mind may bring you additional bonuses in the form of fresh ideas and

inspiration. You may be thinking of travel or study as a way to expand your horizons. You may make a decision

to purposely move outside your comfort zone to see what you can accomplish.

lIBRA (SEp 23 – OCt 22)Your finances may have been stretched lately. You could feel particularly frustrated on Monday when a financial transaction doesn’t work out as expected or if you have less cash than you thought. Try not to worry about it since this transit is temporary. You may also be thinking about investing in your home or property as a way to make your money work harder for you. Meanwhile, the desire to travel may also be on your mind. Why not go for it?

SCORpIO (OCt 23 – NOV 21)A stubborn mood could cause problems when you don’t see eye to eye with another. However, you may be shoot-ing yourself in the foot by being disagreeable. Try to be positive and open-minded and the week can get off to a good start. However, partnerships are important, espe-cially as your partner may have so many sensual delights to offer you. Get together for a gourmet meal with your latest love interest and enjoy feeling loved and cherished.

SAgIttARIuS (NOV 22 – DEC 21)It seems like you’ve been enjoying yourself lately, as you may have a built-in resistance to your routines. You might feel unnecessarily tired for no real reason other than they’re too much trouble. On the other hand, if you can focus, you may be able to close a lucrative deal, negotiate a pay raise, or find a way to increase your earn-ings and improve your lifestyle. Just a little effort could yield big results. As health issues are also in focus, don’t ignore these either.

CApRICORN (DEC 22 – JAN 19)There is a lot of activity in your romance zone, which you may be very happy about. If you’re single, you’ll en-joy flirting and chatting with positive, optimistic people. Those who love success as much as you do may be the ones you gravitate toward. Don’t let friends criticize your choice of dates. Ignore them and listen to your heart. You may be eager for one particular association to work out, but don’t try to manipulate things to your advantage. It’s best to go with the flow.

AQuARIuS (JAN 20 – FEB 18)Much as you’d like to relax at home, career issues may take up a lot of time and energy. Monday could be frus-trating in this respect, but don’t get uptight. Do the best you can and the situation may resolve itself. Meanwhile, adjust your schedule so you can recharge your batteries, eat well, and get more rest. Use this as a time of reflec-tion in which you connect with your heart and rethink your priorities. You might get an impulse that could take you in a new direction.

pISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)One thing you may learn this week is to not argue with the powers that be. Someone may have you tied up in red tape that wastes your time and energy. Do the best you can and focus on what is working in your life. These issues should soon resolve themselves. They’re only temporary. Meanwhile, equally powerful energies may encourage you to connect with friends or business associates to collaborate on plans or projects. It could involve a financial incentive.
