WILLISTON, N.D. – Williston State College is responding to the industry needs of Western North Da- kota by developing an Automation and Control option to be added to the Petroleum Production Tech- nology program. Adding automation and control to the current Lease Operator offering will greatly expand the program. e program will include three options for participants: two-year Associate in Applied Science Degree, one-year certificate, and a dual credit option for high school students. In order to most effectively impact energy developments, WSC hopes for the program’s participants to work closely with significant industry and community groups while enrolled. is collaborative effort will help to ensure that students are adequately prepared for careers in the field, as well as creating the possibility of internships throughout the students’ education. e focus of the program will stem from the technological aspects of numerous industries including gas, utilities, oil, etc. It is anticipated that it will become the center pro- gram at the Western Star and Technology Center, providing students with the skills necessary to remain competitive in their long-term career. Jerry Barrow, the newly hired head of the pro- gram, has very high hopes for what it can achieve. “I know the program [Petroleum Production Technology] will be a great success because the industry here in Williston and surrounding area is behind it,” stated Barrow. “e school administration has made a great commitment to the program’s success by providing wonderful laboratory and training space at the Western Star along with state-of-the-art equipment.” e addition of automation and control as an option under the Petroleum and Production Technology program will go through the WSC Curriculum Committee very shortly. e program is scheduled to begin this coming fall, 2013. The Sloulin International Airport recently spruced up the exte-rior of its terminal – providing more outside seating space for flyers and giving more exposure to a plaque commemorating the airport’s namesakes.

Airport manager Steven Kjergaard says they removed overgrown vege-tation in favor of stamped concrete.

“The concrete will be easier to main-tain,” he says.

“We have ordered more benches for additional seating and we wanted to pay homage to the Western Star City so we had six stars stamped into the concrete.”

The project also allowed the airport to better display a plaque which explains the origin of the airport’s name.

The Sloulin family donated a section of land to the City of Willis-ton for the airport in honor of their fallen brothers. 1st Lt. Wesley C. Sloulin and 2nd Lt. Kermit G. Sloulin were killed in action just months apart during WW II.

Wesley was killed when the plane he was piloting exploded over the North African area on January 7, 1943. Kemit died in the South Pacific area November 21, 1942. It’s believed the brothers were approximately 23 (Wesley) and 30 (Kemit) at the times of their deaths.

Kjergaard said it always bothered him that the plaque wasn’t displayed well.

“It honors where the airport came from and the service-men and women who gave their lives for our country,” he says.

The airport was officially dedicated as Sloulin Field on September 10, 1954 with the unveiling of the plaque by the brothers’ sister Edith Sloulin.

On May 22, 1983, the air-port was officially rededi-cated. During the ceremony the Sloulin family -brothers Al, Vernon and Ralph and sister Edith presented the

original American flags that were given to the Sloulin family during the burial of Wesley and Kermit.

At the time of the rededication - City of Williston officials said they were proud to have the airport named after these two fine Americans, Wesley and Kermit Sloulin.

WILLISTON, N.D. – It’s been almost a year in the making, but Williston State finally has a finished product. In the summer of 2012, WSC was approached by a com-pany called “Viewpoints” with an opportunity to pro-duce a video segment.

WSC President, Dr. Ray-mond Nadolny jumped at the chance stating, “At the time we had a lot of staff who were, and still are, pro-viding remarkable services. I thought it was an oppor-tunity to recognize the out-standing work they were contributing to

students in a hyper-growth economy.”

Viewpoints, hosted by former NFL legend Terry Bradshaw, was “designed to give viewers information they needed about subjects that affected them in manage-able portions,” states Veiwpoints.com. The program explores many topics in varying areas like educa-tion, the environ-ment, and health-care. The show is headquartered in South Florida and films on location throughout the United States and Canada.

Williston State’s segment focus-es on education, in particular how WSC is dealing with the cur-rent local econ-omy and fulfill-ing community needs. The video is about five minutes in length and features four WSC em-ployees who each share their experi-ence working with students and indus-try in our changing environment.

“I believe that what we see in this segment represents not only what WSC is experi-encing, but what the community at large is experiencing. We have all had to step up to meet enormous demands,” said President Nadolny. “It demonstrates the best of all of us.”

The segment will air over the next few weeks in both local and national markets. The released placement schedule shows the following air dates:

Minot/Bismarck/Williston Sunday 7/21 1:30pm FOX KNDX-TV

(BPT) - A lot of things change when you become a parent. The shows you watch, the restaurants you go to and the concept of sleep as you once knew it all evolve when your family structure transforms from a “me” to a “we.” And increasingly, personal gadgets like smartphones are fol-lowing the same trend.

“One day I looked at my phone and realized I had almost as many apps on it for my daughter as I did for myself,” says Kat Holmes, principal designer for Microsoft’s Win-dows Phone. “My smartphone had stopped being just mine.” In fact, a recent study conducted by Babycenter.com shows that 75 percent of moms regularly hand over their smartphone to their kids.

But even with smartphone use among kids on the rise, concerns remain over how to keep curious fingers from navigating where they shouldn’t. This concern is what inspired Kat and the team at Microsoft to build new parent-friendly features into the company’s latest Win-dows Phone products. The most notable is Kid’s Corner, a space within your phone just for kids where they only

have access to the apps, games, music and videos selected for them. So you can hand your phone over and let them explore while your personal stuff is safe and password protected. Kid’s Corner also disables browsing, calling and purchasing, so you won’t have any surprises on your phone bill later.

In addition to working full-time at Microsoft, Kat is also a mother of two small kids so she’s familiar with the challenges of creating balance in a busy week. “Tech plays a role in helping our family stay connected - keep-ing track of our schedules, our to-dos and each other,” says Kat. “And yes, sometimes letting my kids watch a video on my phone gives me a few moments of quiet to catch my breath.”

We asked Kat for a few more tech tips for creating bal-ance as you share your smartphone with your kids. ---

*Partner with your kids to curate their mobile experi-ence: To make mobile time fun, set aside time with your kids to choose new mobile content together, including new apps, music and videos. You’ll have peace of mind

knowing what your kids are looking at, while giving them a sense that there is a space that’s just for them.

*Smartphones can be a simple way for kids to create and share: Smartphones aren’t just about apps, they’re also a way for kids to capture and share the world from their point of view.-”My kids like to make little video messages for me and post them for me to find later,” says Kat.-”They can’t accidentally send or upload photos from Kid’s Corner, so I know everything they make is just going to stay on my phone.” For other creative outlets with tech Kat suggests Kid’s Draw Free - an ad-free app that lets kids cre-ate and share their ev-eryday masterpieces.

*Technology is more than entertainment, it can be edu-cational too: A recent Qualcom survey found that 74 per-cent of parents have downloaded a mobile app for their kids. While many apps out there are solely for fun and entertainment, there are hundreds of great educational

apps that can help kids hone their skills - everything from drawing to spelling to memorizing. A few of Kat’s favor-ites include:

Animal Memory - with pictures and sounds of wild an-imals and farm animals, this matching game helps kids hone their memory skills

Connect the Dots - this hand-drawing free app also teach-es kids how to read the names of the pictures they’re drawing

*Turn that fighting into a lesson on sharing: As a mother of two, Kat has learned that sometimes one phone isn’t enough, noting, “With more than one kid in the room, it’s pretty common to have fights over whose turn it is. Try uploading a stop watch or timer like the Six Stop Watch app to your device and encourage your kids to engage in 5- to 10-minute increments, and then hand it over to the next in line.”

Purpose of the Project   The purpose of the project is to improve road-way capacity and level of service at the US Highway 2 and 11th Street intersection in Williston. The limits of the proposed project extend approximately 2000 feet to the south and 2500 feet to the north of 11th street along US Highway 2. 11th St. will be reconstructed from the west frontage road to Gate Avenue.  Recent Design / Environmental Related Activities The design team conducted additional evalua-tion of design alternatives, adjacent site evaluation, a review of potential utility impacts and preliminary right of way needs. The result of this work was summarized in a Project Concept Report (PCR) for use by NDDOT and the City of Williston in selecting the proposed de-sign. The PCR includes a Noise Study that did not recommend noise abatement features. Proposed Design NDDOT and the City of Williston have agreed to implement “Alternative E”, to be constructed in two phases. Phase I will be constructed beginning this sum-mer. Planning for Phase II will begin now, with con-struction tentatively planned in the next two years, after right of way is secured and if funding is available. The approximate schedule for implementation of both phases is shown at left. See inside this newsletter for an illus-tration of the proposed design for Phase I and Phase II.

Tony Stewart led 84 laps but ran out of fuel on the next-to-last circuit and finished 26th. Pre-race favorite Clint Bowyer, a two-time New Hampshire win-ner and the MWR driver expected to be first to the checkered flag, wound up 13th but held second place in the series stand-ings, 56 points behind Johnson. Though Busch had one of the strongest cars in the field, he wasn’t brimming with confidence when he lined up in third in the inside lane for the final restart on Lap 301. “We didn’t have a chance,” Busch said. “Vickers taking the outside (lane for the restart) was going to be the car to beat, and Tony obviously running out of gas there--almost wrecked with him. Just wish the race was two laps longer maybe and Vickers would have run out and may-be we would have been able to win the thing. “

LOUDON, N.H. -- Surprise! The Michael Waltrip Racing driver almost everyone ex-pected to win at New Hampshire Motor Speedway wasn’t in Victory Lane. But his part-time teammate was. Mak-ing the most of his limited stint in MWR’s No. 55 Toyota, Brian Vickers solidified his claim to a permanent seat in the car with a stunning victory at the Magic Mile. In a green-white-checkered-flag finish, Vickers sped away from Kyle Busch in overtime and took the checkered flag .582 seconds ahead of Busch to win Sunday’s Camping World RV Sales 301. And he did so despite losing a lap because of a pit road penalty incurred when he drove away from his pit stall with a wrench on the deck lid of the 55 Camry -- a lap he later regained with a wave-around just past the midpoint of the

The victory was a strong signal that Vickers has come all the way back from blood clots

in his legs and lungs that threatened his life and sidelined him for the second half of the 2010 season. After recuperating, Vickers ran a full Cup season for Red Bull Racing in 2011 but lost his ride when Red Bull left the sport. The third victory of Vickers’ ca-reer was his first since August 2009 at Michi-gan. Jeff Burton ran third -- his first podium finish since July 2012 at Daytona -- followed by p o l e - s i t t e r Brad Keselowski and Aric Almirola. Series leader Jimmie Johnson, whose qualifying time was disallowed because of a ride-

height violation on Friday, rallied to finish sixth. In the closing laps, Vickers tried to avoid thoughts of what a win would mean for his career, but as he walked to Victory Lane, the importance of his accomplishment began to register. “It was difficult not to think about that

those last 50 laps or 30 laps or whatever it was,” Vickers said. “I just tried to live in the moment as much as possible, turn by turn and not think about the past or the future or what could or couldn’t happen.

“But once it was over, it was… I think it was a sigh of relief with everything that had happened, to finally, clinch another victory after so long and after so much, and it was a lot of thankfulness. I don’t know if that’s the best… that’s definite-ly the feeling I have. I just don’t know if that’s the right word to articulate it. “Just thankful for everything that had happened and everything that didn’t hap-pen; that I was able to get back into a race

Stewart was leading and in full fuel-con-servation mode when contact between the Chevys of Paul Menard and Gordon sent Gordon spinning in Turn 2 on Lap 258. NASCAR called the 11th caution of the race because of the accident, leaving Stewart and Busch to restart side-by-side on Lap 263. Stewart held the top spot for 24 laps, but Vickers showed his muscle late in the

race, passed Kyle Busch for second on Lap 283 and powered past Stewart on the frontstretch four laps later. Vickers was cruising toward his first victory in four years when NASCAR called a caution on Lap 297 of 301 and sent the race to over-time. But the caution only forestalled Vickers’ triumph for one extra lap, as he beat Bus-ch to the finish in the two-lap Sprint.

(BPT) - America’s baby boomers first came on the scene in 1946. They’ve been turning the world on its head ever since.

Known as the country’s greatest generation for leading change, baby boomers make up roughly 26 percent of the United States’

total population - at about 78 million people. Over the years they’ve reinvented almost every-thing about the way America lives - from the music we listen to, to the cars we drive, to the technol-ogy we rely upon, to the way we age.

The oldest baby boomers have al-ready begun crossing the thresh-old into their golden years - and as expected, they’re redesigning what’s on the other side.

Never known as an understated generation, baby boomers have already made it clear that they won’t be fading quietly into re-tirement. On the contrary, they’re all about staying active and en-gaged. Chronologically they may be aging, but their spirits aren’t. So whether it’s finding a new ca-reer, rock-climbing, volunteering, adventure travel or online dating, baby boomers are embracing life’s second act with gusto.

More than any generation be-fore them, baby boomers have adopted lifestyles that help them stay healthy and fit. And they’re embracing modern technologies that enable them to stay connect-ed to the world around them and involved in it. An important way in which active baby boomers are keeping up their youthful pace is by taking care of their hearing.

This generation understands that

in order to fully enjoy the expe-riences of life, you need to stay connected to it. So rather than deny a hearing loss and suffer the negative social, cognitive and professional consequences that inevitably result from leaving it unaddressed, baby boomers are increasingly dealing with hearing

loss head on.

Boomers in their 40s, 50s and 60s are getting their hearing test-ed. And they’re benefitting from the technological revolution tak-ing place in the hearing aid mar-ketplace. Simply put, the genera-tion has caught onto the fact that today’s state-of-the-art hearing aids are highly effective, sleek and sophisticated wearable elec-tronics that can help them stay actively connected to life - not to mention to all their other prized electronics.

America’s baby boomers have been shaking the place up for de-cades. It’s no wonder, then, that they’re now redesigning the gold-en years. For more information on hearing loss, visit the Better Hearing Institute at www.better-hearing.org.

Five trending facts about today’s hearing aids:

1. They’re virtually invisible. Many of today’s hearing aids sit discreetly and comfortably inside the ear canal, providing both nat-ural sound quality, and discreet and easy use.

2. They automatically adjust to all kinds of soundscapes. Recent technological advances with di-rectional microphones have made hearing aids far more versatile than ever before - and in a broad range of sound environments.

3. You can enjoy water sports and sweat while wearing them. Wa-terproof digital hearing aids have arrived. This feature is built into some newly designed hearing aids for those concerned about water, humidity and dust. This feature suits the active lifestyles of swimmers, skiers, snowboard-ers, intensive sports enthusiasts and anyone working in dusty, de-manding environments.

4. They work with smartphones, home entertainment systems and other prized electronics. Wire-less, digital hearing aids are now the norm. That means seamless connectivity - directly into your hearing aid(s) at volumes that are just right for you - from your smartphone, MP3 player, televi-sion and other high-tech gadgets.

5. They’re always at the ready. A new rechargeable feature on some newly designed hearing aids allows you to recharge your hear-ing aids every night, so they’re ready in the morning. It’s super convenient - and there’s no more fumbling with small batteries.

THE WILLISTON REVIEW PAGE 23

HoroscopeWeek of July 21st, 2013

ARIES (MAR 21 – ApR 19)Your imagination is waking up again. Your ruling planet, Mars, is set to enter your sign on March 21st – making you feel as if you are firing on all cylinders. Use this new vigor to rule this week – in life, in love, and at work. The sentimental life seems to be sur-rounded by some discretion uncharacteristic of you. The sentimental enthusiasm will reach its peak, and your devastating charm will make victims.

TAURUS (ApR 20 – MAy 20)The recent retrograde (or apparent backwards mo-tion) of Mercury may have you reflecting on lost love or a missed connection, but things are starting to return to normal for you again mid-month. You’ll enjoy a lot of popularity and a lot of support, which will come in as great help to get where you want to get. Emotional issues are prone to flaring right now, though.

GEMINI (MAy 21 – JUN 20)Career and relationships are taking center stage right now. If you’re single, you’ll be longing for love but would rather be pursued, and not have to do the pursuing. March will be somewhat hectic but filled with significance. Be extra observant! You’ll feel well as long as you take care of yourself and don’t do excesses.

CANCER (JUN 21 – JUl 22)Venus has its eyes on your love life – paving way for a good period of healthy understanding, con-nection, and sentimental vibes. Be choosy about who you spoil with your newfound ardor. You can be very easily hurt by loved ones. The last segment of March could be more restless. Beware! March 2013 will encourage studies, scientific and cultural preoccupations, and will open new horizons at the intellectual level. It’ll be a good period, for instance, for doing a specialty course, for publishing an article and doing some research for a paper.

lEO (JUl 23 – AUG 22)March seems to be treating you more kindly now. The month will unfold in a well-defined financial cli-mate. The insanity of Mercury’s retrograde is finally dying down, but subtleties and subtext are arising in every situation. A new perspective can pave the way for a new love – or vice versa!

VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEp 22)The planets are going crazy moving all over the area of relationships in your life. Feeling confused? Nar-row your focus back down to the bare details, as you prefer to do. Simplicity in your own communication is important right now – tell friends and loved ones exactly what you want or need or you’ll be dealing with disappointment. Try to approach things in a rational, sincere and honest way!

lIBRA (SEp 23 – OCT 22)You haven’t had much time to focus on love and re-lationships in the beginning of the month, but after the 12th, things will start catching up again in this arena. Partaking in the completion of a goal with

your partner will help close the gap that

recent times have made. Another piece of good news is that you won’t be working just for glory, but the efforts will also bring you money.

SCORpIO (OCT 23 – NOV 21)Love and lust dance madly around you this month, which is a nice change from the pace that you’ve been struggling to meet lately. If you don’t channel these energies into the love sector of your life, may-be it’s time to take a trip (of any length)! Don’t let this power go to waste. Children, pregnancies and various parental aspects can be in attention... if you’re not ready for that, make it clear and employ caution.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 22 – DEC 21)Your ruling planet, Jupiter, symbolic of expansion and enterprise, is hanging out in the relationship area of your life – and in this time of great self-dis-covery, you will be relieved to have a new partner or friend accompany you on your journeys right now! For those who already have a relationship, spring will bring refreshment, if the relationship is solid, and freedom, if the relationship is suffocating or constraining. It’s very important that you move. It’ll do you good as concerns both the body and the psy-che.

CApRICORN (DEC 22 – JAN 19)Just like the goat that represents the sign of Capri-corn, you are always chipping away at one goal or another in your climb to the top of the mountain. Love is in the air for almost all zodiac signs right now, and you are no exception! Yours will come unexpectedly; keep your eyes peeled! The time has come for you to make decisions, to have initiatives and have procedures started. You’ll take action, in-terfere, build. You’ll have ideas, and you’ll also have the power to put them into practice.

AQUARIUS (JAN 20 – FEB 18)While most signs are encountering changes in their love lives right now, for you, favor is shining instead on your finances. Be pragmatic this month. Even if you do encounter love or are in a relationship, your thoughts will center more on the material world than it normally does. The second part of March 2013 will bring important decisions, will boost initiatives and action, and most probably, certain changes or nov-elty. However, it foreshadows to be rather stressful and it will have considerable conflicting potential.

pISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)You are on fire this month – and yes, in a good way! You are feeling positively radiant, and it shows. The 1st through the 12th of the month (when the sun was still aligned with the constellation of Pisces) were the cream of the crop, but you’ll feel like the spotlight is yours all month long. Your replenished enthusiasm will attract admirers, both of the platonic and roman-tic variety. Right now, you can afford to be picky – so why not be?! Morally and spiritually, it’ll be a favorable period.

WILLISTON, N.D. – Williston State College is responding to the industry needs of Western North Da-kota by developing an Automation and Control option to be added to the Petroleum Production Tech-nology program. Adding automation and control to the current Lease Operator offering will greatly expand the program. The program will include three options for participants: two-year Associate in Applied Science Degree, one-year certificate, and a dual credit option for high school students.

In order to most effectively impact energy developments, WSC hopes for the program’s participants to work closely with significant industry and community groups while enrolled. This collaborative effort will help to ensure that students are adequately prepared for careers in the field, as well as creating the possibility of internships throughout the students’ education. The focus of the program will stem from the technological aspects of numerous industries including gas, utilities, oil, etc. It is anticipated that it will become the center pro-gram at the Western Star and Technology Center, providing students with the skills necessary to remain competitive in their long-term career. Jerry Barrow, the newly hired head of the pro-gram, has very high hopes for what it can achieve.

“I know the program [Petroleum Production Technology] will be a great success because the industry here in Williston and surrounding area is behind it,” stated Barrow. “The school administration has made a great commitment to the program’s success by providing wonderful laboratory and training space at the Western Star along with state-of-the-art equipment.”

The addition of automation and control as an option under the Petroleum and Production Technology program will go through the WSC Curriculum Committee very shortly. The program is scheduled to begin this coming fall, 2013. Students are encouraged to enroll as soon as possible if interested.
