Leadership Williston Visits Mercy Medical Center

For one day only, The Salvation Army will partner with the Walmart store to host a “Fill the Truck” toy drive that will help provide new toys and coats to local children in need this Christmas. The event is open to the general public who would like to donate new toys and coats to children who take part in Salvation Army programs year-

round. As they enter the store, Walmart shoppers will receive a list of suggested gifts to help fill The Salvation Army’s truck. Once the truck is full, The Salvation Army will bring the donations to our main office at 13 Main St and distribute the gifts to local children in need.

We need volunteers to make this event happen!! Community members interested

in volunteering for the event can contact Captain Rhegan Stansbury at The Salvation Army at 701-572-2921.

Walmart and The Salvation Army have partnered together for more than 30 years to help support people in need. This year, Walmart and Sam’s Club will once again

host Salvation Army red kettles in front of their stores as part of The Salvation Army’s 122nd Annual Red Kettle Campaign between November 23rd and December 24th. In 2011, Walmart and Sam’s Club helped The Salvation Army raise $40,000 locally, and more than $46 million nationally—nearly one-third of the record $147.6

million raised. All donations made to the red kettles and “Fill the Truck” events will remain in the local community and help The Salvation Army provide food, clothing, financial assistance and other services to approximately 5,000 individuals.

The toy drive will be held Saturday December 8, from 9:00 a.m - 5:00 pm. Walmart is located at 4001 2nd Ave W. in Williston.

Walmart Hosts “Fill The Truck” Toy Drive

WSC Collecting Donations For Deployed MilitaryWilliston State College’s Veteran’s Club is collaborating with Books for Soldiers to collect books, movies, toiletries, and other gifts for deployed military personnel.

Tony Freed, Veteran’s Club Co-Advisor, said this is a good opportunity to send items to the deployed military personnel during the holidays. “I know when I was deployed with the Navy over the holidays it was always nice to receive packages” said Freed.

This is a nice way to give back to the people fighting for our country. Any donations are welcome. Donations can be dropped off at Williston

State College in room 209B or 112D through December 12.

For more information about the donations, how to give, or to get involved with WSC’s Veteran’s Club, contact Tony Freed at 701-774-4502 or [email protected].

If you have ever sought motivation in your business or personal life, you are probably familiar with writer and speaker Zig Ziglar. Even if you don’t realize it.

Zig Ziglar was the son of a single mother after his father’s death when Zig was six. He married Jean, his teenage sweetheart, in 1946, and the two of them spent the next 65 years growing together.

A World War II Navy Veteran, salesman and motivational speaker, 86-year-old Ziglar’s views that success hinges upon attitude and motivation are the cornerstone for much of the personal development in business movement.

Pneumonia ended Ziglar’s personal journey November 28, but his thought provoking writings and down-home wisdom live on.

What made Ziglar different from other salespeople or speakers? He was a great businessman because he was a great student. Ziglar was constantly in learning mode in his relationships with people, and he pieced that education together into the words he shared with his readers and listeners.

Whether you have read all of his 28 books or none of them, you likely have more to learn. Forbes Magazine calls these the 10 quotes from Zig Ziglar that have the power to completely change the direction of one’s life.

10) “Remember that failure is an event, not a person.”

9) “You will get all you want in life, if you help enough other people get what they

want.”

8) “People often say motivation doesn’t last. Neither does bathing—that’s why we

recommend it daily.”

7) “There has never been a statue erected to honor a critic.”

6) “People don’t buy for logical reasons. They buy for emotional reasons.”

5) “Expect the best. Prepare for the worst. Capitalize on what comes.”

4) “If you go looking for a friend, you’re going to find they’re scarce. If you go out to be a friend, you’ll find them everywhere.”

3) “A goal properly set is halfway reached.”

2) “Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude.”

1) “If you can dream it, you can achieve it.”

How can you apply the words of Zig Ziglar to change your life for the better? How can you add a positive spin to your business, your work, and your relationships? There’s power in those words – the power to transform an attitude and a life if you let them. Never stop learning.

And, as always, if you have positivity you would like to share, feel free to email me. I can be reached at [email protected].

Happy Holidays! It’s time for finals, feasting, and this year, fitness!

It seems every year, someone we know makes a New Year’s resolution to work out every day, eat right, and lose at least ten pounds. Realistic? Probably not. And let’s face it, when winter break commences we focus more on sleeping, eating, and watching football games than we do on our physical health. I turn into a couch potato over the holidays, I’ll admit it.

Think about this for a second: would you rather sit on a couch all day, eating leftover Christmas food, candy, cookies, and whatever else, knowing that your jeans are getting tighter, and your face is breaking out so you look like you’re reliving puberty? Or, would you rather make a commitment to doing something active once a day for at least a half hour, so you can continue snacking, fitting comfortably into your jeans and acne free?

That’s what I thought. So find some gym gear, lace up your tennis shoes, and take notes on how to stay fit during the holiday season.

If you need inspiration for getting up and being active, stay up late and watch all the infomercials about programs like Insanity or P90X. They are so addicting to watch, it’s kind of scary. Still need inspiration? Hit All Season Sport About and stock up on some new workout clothes. Nothing says let’s get in shape like a new pair of running shoes.

Don’t have a gym located near your house? Use your neighborhood as your track, the basketball in the garage as your weight, and make your own routine!

Try to run or walk for 20 minutes a day, and if you’re into the whole cardio thing, run to your heart’s content. Your body is its own machine, so do some body-weight

squats, pushups, crunches, and whatever else you can think of to do. If an indoor walk is more your thing, head over to the walking track at Williston State College.

If you do have a gym nearby (there are several in Williston), head there, jump on a treadmill and start up your workout. You can use the different weight machines, go for a swim in the pool, or play some basketball. Raymond Family Community Center even has seasonal passes you can get, or you can buy a select number of passes while you’re at home for a few weeks. Nifty, I know.

A rousing afternoon of playing Xbox’s Just Dance is just as effective as anything, plus it’s entertaining to watch.

If you have pets, play with them. Play tug-of-war with them, take them on a walk, light jog, or simply put on those roller blades, put the dog on a leash, and let them pull you along. I just hope you have good balance.

When it comes to eating that wonderful Christmas dinner of ham, potatoes, veggies, stuffing, pie, cookies, and more pie, you don’t have to diet. You can still enjoy all your favorite foods, and you can even have second helpings. Just eat smaller portions, and eat slowly. Don’t just sit there and stuff your face. Not only will you gross out your tablemates, you’ll get fuller faster.

Make a commitment to yourself. Get up off the couch, get outside, and be active. It’s not that hard, plus it frees up your New Year’s resolution for something more practical! Email me your favorite workout tips at [email protected] and I’ll pass them along in my next column!

Happy Fittnessmas!Courtney

North Dakota already has set an oil production record for the fifth consecutive year and the state is on pace to best the previous mark by more than 50 million barrels.

The state Department of Mineral Resources said Tuesday that crude production through September totaled more than 173.9 million barrels, up from the record 152.9 million barrels set last year.

North Dakota produced 21.8 million barrels in September, up from 21.7 million barrels in August.

Oil production numbers typically lag at least two months. It’s possible that the state will end the year at more than 200 million barrels, once October, November and December production results are factored.

North Dakota trails only Texas in oil output. North Dakota has risen from the ninth biggest oil state just six years ago with improved horizontal drilling techniques

in the rich Bakken shale and Three Forks formations in the western part of the state.

The ability to move crude to market is keeping pace with North Dakota’s oil production. Nearly half of North Dakota’s

crude is being shipped by rail due to the lack of pipeline capacity.

North Dakota began producing oil in 1951. The state has tallied more than 2 billion barrels of oil since then, mostly in the last few years.

Ingredients• 3 pounds boneless pork shoulder• Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper• 2 tablespoons vegetable oil• 4 cups low-sodium chicken broth• 1 cup soy sauce• 1/2 cup dry sherry• 1/4 cup packed dark brown sugar• 2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil• 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes• 2 star anise pods• 1 cinnamon stick• 5 cloves garlic, smashed• 1 2-inch piece ginger, peeled and sliced• 6 to 8 whole dried shiitake mushrooms• 1 pound soba or ramen noodles• 1/4 cup water chestnuts, sliced• 2 Fresno chile peppers, seeded and thinly sliced• 2 scallions, sliced• 1/4 cup fresh cilantro

DirectionsSeason the pork with salt and pepper. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat with the vegetable oil. Add the pork and brown on all sides, 6 to 8 minutes. Transfer to a plate.

Combine the broth, soy sauce, sherry, sugar, sesame oil, red pepper flakes, star anise and cinnamon stick in a 5-quart slow cooker. Stir to dissolve the sugar, then add the garlic, ginger and mushrooms. Add the pork, cover and program to cook 4 hours on high, then 2 hours on low, or 6 hours total on low.

Transfer the pork to a platter, cover and let rest 15 minutes. Remove the mushrooms from the broth and halve them, then return to the broth.

Meanwhile, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the noodles as the label directs. Slice the pork. Divide the noodles among bowls and top with some of the broth and mushrooms and a few slices of pork. Garnish with the water chestnuts, chiles, scallions and cilantro.

recipe of the week

Denny’s, the 24-hour American diner, opened a restaurant on Thursday in Las Vegas with a wedding chapel where couples can tie the knot after a meal of bacon, peanut butter and bananas between two slices of French toast finished off with a bacon vodka chaser.

The restaurant is near the Las Vegas strip on historic downtown Fremont Street. Its modern curves, neon and steel are meant to fit in with the city’s “over the top” feel, said Frances Miller, chief marketing officer.

“A normal Denny’s is not going to cut it in Vegas,” she said, adding that the restaurant is the first of 1,700 Denny’s worldwide that will

have a wedding chapel and photo booth. It is one of fewer than 50 Denny’s with a full bar.

The chapel is scheduled to start hosting nuptials in the first quarter of 2013, with a celebrity wedding slated for February. Details of the

wedding were not disclosed.

With this new restaurant, Denny’s Corp, based in South Carolina, hopes to capitalize on redevelopment that is underway in the downtown Las Vegas area.

The restaurant’s neighbors include a zip line that carries visitors above street-level traffic and a restaurant that holds a Guinness Record for the highest-calorie burger.

At 6,400 square feet, the Fremont Street Denny’s is among the company’s 10 largest in the world. She said the restaurant, owned by the parent company instead of being franchised, is also among the most expensive Denny’s to build, but she declined to say how much it cost.

P.S. The French toast plate is called the “King Stack.” As in Elvis.

Adapted from George V. Higgins’ novel and set in New Orleans, Killing Them Softly follows professional enforcer Jackie Cogan (Pitt), who investigates a heist that occurs during a high-stakes, mob-protected poker game. The film also features Scoot McNairy, Ben Mendelsohn, Ray Liotta, Richard Jenkins, with James Gandolfini, Vincent Curatola, Max Casella, and Sam Shepard.

The film was written and directed by Andrew Dominik. He chose to update the setting of the

story, saying “as I started adapting it, it was the story of an economic crisis, and it was an economic crisis in an economy that was funded by gambling—and the crisis occurred due to a failure in regulation. It just seemed to have something that you couldn’t ignore.” Visit www.rottentomatoes.com for several reviews.

This Week in HistoryOn December 7, 1941 at 7:55 a.m. Hawaii time, a Japanese dive bomber bearing the red symbol of the Rising Sun of Japan on its wings appears out of the clouds above the island of Oahu. A swarm of 360 Japanese warplanes followed, descending on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor in a ferocious assault. The surprise attack struck a critical blow against the U.S. Pacific fleet and drew the United States irrevocably into World War II. The day after Pearl Harbor was bombed, President Roosevelt appeared before a joint session of Congress and declared, “Yesterday, December 7, 1941--a date which will live in infamy--the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.” After a brief and forceful speech, he asked Congress to approve a resolution recognizing the state of war between the U.S. and Japan. The Senate voted for war against Japan by 82 to 0, and the House of Representatives approved the resolution by a vote of 388 to 1. The sole dissenter was Representative Jeannette Rankin of Montana.
