The Victoria GAZETTE

by Sue Orsen/The Victora Gazette It's close to the first, if not the first, large public outdoor community event in Victoria since the coronavirus infected the world and hurt families, friends, churches, and businesses far and wide. The Victoria Farmers' Market holds many surprises every Thursday from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the parking lot of Enki Brewing on Stieger Lake Lane. You can't miss it! Easy parking everywhere. The Farmers' Market runs through October 8th so there's still plenty of time to visit and partake. It's an easy stroll from one end of the market to the other and such a summertime thing to do. The tomatoes make outstanding BLT's. The honey-sticks are a sweet novelty. The flowers from Marta are fresh and long lasting. Victoria's Gold beer at Enki is cold and delicious. The eggplant is shiny purple and very big. The dog treats are good enough to eat. Savor the summer! The rest of the story is in the paper edition of the Gazette and also online in Sue’s Album.

The Scoop at City Hall

I read three books in August, each of them connected to Victoria, Minnesota! I love Victoria Connections. I first spied Relationship Matters when I was sitting in the lobby of Catalyst Clinic, waiting for my name to be called. After reading a few pages of the book, I knew I'd be looking for my own copy. They didn't have it on hand at Barnes and Noble in Eden Prairie, but Amazon.com sent a copy to me almost immediately, and I read it almost immediately. I'd call it a page turner. Written by Dr. Scott Jensen, who lives nearby on Pierson Lake, Relationship Matters includes many personal, real-life health stories, and actual patient encounters over the last three decades. It goes without saying that medical doctors experience life and death issues like no other profession. For example, on a flight back to the Cities, a passenger had a heart attack and Dr. Jensen responded to the flight attendant's call, "Is there a doctor in the house?" The next sixty minutes were harrowing. Decisions had to be made. One time Dr. Jensen was called to deal with a fancy four-pronged fishhook that had attached a fisherman's right hand to the left buttocks of the fisherman's wife. Visually comical, if not disturbing, and physically painful. The most personal chapters include stories of Scott's own family -- the death of his father, his mother, his younger brother, and how he dealt, and deals, with all of it. I hope to re-read Relationship Matters soon, in order to chew on it again.

*** Then I got an email from John Abel, Director of Shared Ministries at St. Victoria Catholic Church. "There's a present in your Gazette Dropbox," he wrote. I eagerly stepped out my back door and retrieved a large manila envelope. Unclasping the flap, I pulled out what I would call an impressive coffee table book. Oversized and with a striking sunset on the hard cover, America's Lake Vermilion would inspire conversation even if unopened. But I opened it, read all the text, and numbered the pages of my favorite pictures. John did all the writing. His friend Thomas Hill did all the photography. My favorite pictures are on pages 11, 14, 32, 40, 45, 117, 126, 136, and 139. As John writes, "The beauty of our natural world is an important way to connect with God." John interviews many residents on Lake Vermilion and tells their stories. He notes that their common theme is to help preserve and strengthen a place they love, but it is the photography and the writing together that bring alive the book's subtitle: Its Seasons, Stories, and Spirit. One of the most amazing stories that John tells is from Wade and Jennifer Anderson. The east end of Lake Vermilion suffered a terrible summer storm in July of 2018 that toppled a big pine tree that was home to an eagle's nest. Two young eagles, which he calls fledglings, went down with the tree. One died but the other was still alive and brought to the Raptor Center in St. Paul. The eaglet had a broken leg, was nursed back to health, and released into the wild that December 2018. Happy ending! Another story John tells is about two fishing buddies, Brian and Corey. On the same day that Brian died from complications of Type 1 diabetes, Corey went out on Lake Vermilion to reflect on things for a while, alone, and caught a Minnesota state record Muskie at 57 1/4 inches and 47 pounds. Corey thinks his friend was looking down on him that day in August 2019. My favorite story from John is about his first bike, at the age of 10, which still rides as well as it did on the first day! His dad had said to him, "Take care of this bike, it's only the one you'll ever get."

*** The third book I read in August is an old one, published in 1985, that I pull off the shelf every now and then because I'm intrigued by the story of Norwegian ancestors on my mother's paternal side. The book, written by a relative named Robert Lloyd Lee, features Trond Opdahl, born in 1847 in Valdres, near Lake Tyin, which Allan and I have visited in Norway, still owned by the Opdahls to this day. In 1869, Trond set sail for America with a younger brother Helge and came to live and farm in Lyon County, Minnesota, where land was available to homestead. Other Norwegians had settled there, including the Orsens. Yesterday really happened and its stories can only be told when tomorrow becomes today. I believe Trond Opdahl is my only relative who became part of the gold rush to Alaska. It's a story of stamina, though he died on a mountain of snow and ice before reaching the gold fields. His grave is in the Hemnes Lutheran Cemetery only a couple miles from where I grew up. Amazingly, his family had paid to have his body transported from Alaska back to Minnesota. So now you know better. I don't just watch movies all day.

To the Editor: My son Jacob Flannery, age 5, found the August fishhook on page 26 on the tire of the mini van parked wrong on Main Street. Thank you. And, yes, Jim and Linda are my husband's aunt and uncle. And, yes, I grew up in Minneota with lots of relatives in St. Leo and the surrounding areas of Minneota and Ghent! Amanda Kack Flannery, Victoria, Minnesota

To the Editor: Hello, Sue. I am not sure why the Gazette stopped coming to the Blessing House. But it has been a while since I have had my hands on it. I tried to go online, but that didn't work for me, meaning I couldn't access it. I am missing my favorite paper and would like to be put back on the mailing list. I tried all the channels and yet couldn't make anything work. Please be kind to an old reader and help me get back on your mailing list. Love, Gail Berger, Victoria, Minnesota

To the Editor: Just want to say thank you for the two-page article about Mount Rushmore in your August paper. It brought back memories of family vacations with my parents and siblings and also trips with my husband and kids. Also had friends living in Spearfish, South Dakota, so that meant friendship trips. Thanks again. So nice to think about great memories. Judy Koch, Waconia, Minnesota

To the Editor: Hi, Sue. We really enjoy your paper. Keep up the good work. Curt and Cyndy Corners, Victoria, Minnesota

To the Editor: I read with great sadness of the passing of Victoria Gazette columnist and all around great guy, Tom Stumpf. I didn't know him well, but still count him as a friend. He was a great musician, writer, lover of dogs, active member of his church, and much more. I am writing now because I wonder how many of his friends and fans know that Tom authored at least one book, What! a Good Dog. It is a real treasure, filled with stories and photos of his dogs and dedicated to his father, Roman, and to dog lovers everywhere. One of my favorite parts of the book is that each chapter is preceded by a quote such as "The average dog is nicer than the average person" (Andy Rooney) and "If there are no dogs in heaven, then I want to go where they went" (Will Rogers). Tear jerking, heartwarming, and spot on. I don't know where you can get a copy but I bet Tom's family or Editor Sue does. Robin Kelleher, Burnsville, Minnesota

To the Editor: On behalf of Momma and me, heartfelt thanks for including Rachel Anderson's press release about our award winning books, Lina Unleashed and Sit Stay Pray, in the August edition of the Gazette. You are incredibly kind to give us some ink, as they say, in the publicity world. By the way, Momma is busy telling folks that you didn't just print the article because we are related, but rather because the books are really good. I need to put her on a tighter leash. Thanks again. Lina (and Robin Kelleher), Woofda!

To the Editor: I would like to subscribe to the Victoria Gazette. Enclosed please find my payment. Thank you. June Miller, Chaska, Minnesota

To the Editor: Hi, Sue. Love your paper. Can't leave it alone until I've read through it all. I agree with you in asking why the church encourages those over 65 to stay away from Mass. Found the fishhook on the mini-van fender on page 26. You sure do some clever things with hiding the hook. Fun looking for it. Enjoy the rest of the summer. It's going fast. Doreen Walter, Cologne, Minnesota

To the Editor: Seriously, thank you for your newspaper, a rare delight, although I miss the recipes. In this strange time, you give your readers "an extended family and you applaud the extraordinary beauty of ordinary people living ordinary lives," a truism but I didn't write it. It's a quote describing The Mitford Years series by Jan Karon. Heartwarming and delightful. God bless you. Linda Flannery, Shorewood, Minnesota MORE LETTERS IN PAPER EDITION OF THE GAZETTE.

CITIZENS RESPOND PUBLICLY TO THE MAYOR OF VICTORIA At the August 3rd Victoria city council meeting, each of ten citizens gave a lengthy response related to what they heard from Mayor Funk at the July 27th city council meeting. Much of Mayor Funk's July 27th statement was printed in the August issue of the Gazette in a City Scoop article wherein he stated, "I am being falsely accused of racism." REGARDING THE MAYOR’S STATEMENT TO THE PUBLIC Said Mayor Funk, “My statement at the July 27th council meeting was simply prompted because of the fact that both Councilmembers Vogt and Black and Mr. Brownlee on the Planning Commission, brought politics into this council. When Councilmember Vogt and Councilmember Black questioned my using the title "mayor" ... I think people need to understand that as mayor I was invited to attend the GARE training, so I spoke as the mayor. I never said I speak for the entire council. I said I speak for myself as mayor.” VICTORIA RECEIVES $747,000 TO COOPERATE WITH VIRUS RULES AND REGULATIONS On August 3rd, Council received an update from representatives of Wold Architects and Engineers, St. Paul, the company that was hired this past March 2020 to look at the public facilities in Victoria and assess current and long term needs. Responding to questions from the council, Dana replied, "We have already received our entire disbursement. We do have the cash in the bank. Now we have to show documentation to the state and make a report. Whatever we don't use, goes to the county. Then Carver County gets to use that money."

AFTER THE CARES MONEY IS SPENT STAFF SEES $1 MILLION MORE IN RELATED EXPENSE Dana said funds have been expended for sanitation, unemployment expense, and personal protective equipment, for example. Then she gave an itemized list of expenditures for the rest of the dollars and asked if Council agreed with those expenditures coming from the CARES Act Fund. Council unanimously was okay all of it. Dana said there are also unfunded Covid related needs totalling more than a million dollars. She referred to an estimated $600,000 expenditure for a decontamination area for the Fire Department plus $400,000 to accommodate social distancing in a common area at the Public Works Garage.

THE LAW FORBIDS DISCRIMINATION IN HIRING, FIRING, JOB APPLICANTS, ETC. Mayor Funk included an item he received from Former Victoria Mayor Mary Meuwissen as a report item for the August 24th city council meeting. It was acknowledged without further comment. The letter was also addressed to Carver County Commissioner Tom Workman. The introductory paragraph stated: "Planning Commissioner [John Brownlee] is asking for appointed jobs -- like a position on the Planning Commission or other appointed positions -- to be limited to a person of color. [But] It is unlawful to discriminate against an employee or job applicant because of association with a person of a particular race which prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, and national origin." EARLY BUDGET NUMBERS CONTINUE TO CHANGE AS PRELIMINARY DISCUSSIONS CONTINUE Trisha said the preliminary levy (as presented at 5:30 p.m. that evening) projects a levy increase of 6.95% over the levy for 2020. The levy increase, she said, would result in a .6% increase in the tax rate, which amounts to $2.83 per month increase in the city portion of the property tax bill on a median valued home. STOP SIGNS AT RED OAK DRIVE AND HACKAMORE SUFFICIENTLY CLOSE TO VICTORIA ELEMENTARY Council voted 5-0 on August 24th to install stop signs at the intersection of Red Oak Drive and Hackamore Street, as requested by residents and their petition signed by more than 50% of the neighborhood. Although city staff recommended denial, councilmembers determined three of the warrants were met and the all-way stop is therefore warranted. SHORTER CITY STOOP FROM AUGUST WESTBROOKE CHURCH TO BEGIN NEW CONSTRUCTION *Pastor Kevin Sharpe introduced himself on August 24th and invited councilmembers and staff to a groundbreaking ceremony for a campus of Westbrooke Church, to be located in the southwest corner of Engler and Jonathan Carver Parkway (intersection of County Roads 10 and 11) on Saturday, September 19th. The property is located in Laketown Township until formerly annexed into the City of Victoria. Construction will begin in a couple weeks. COMPREHENSIVE SCOOP IN PAPER EDITION OF GAZETTE.

CAMPGROUND AT LAKE AUBURN It's not on the beaten path and so it's easy to forget about it, or to not even know about it in the first place. But it's located here in Victoria and it's a popular spot. It was back in April of 1984 that Carver Park began planning for a 54-site family campground at Lake Auburn, with its entrance to be off County Road 11 North. Construction began in May of that year and was completed that fall. Grand Opening occurred in May 1986. The Gazette covered it. Although the perimeter of the campsite was replete with mature trees even then, the campsites themselves were quite barren at that time. Today the entire campground is lush and shaded. The small private beach for campers has expanded a bit, but is still small and private. Not long after the beach opened up in the 1980's, daughter Jenny Orsen was hired to be the lifeguard. Since the place was still being discovered, Jenny did a lot of reading in the lifeguard's chair. On July 3rd, 2020, when all photos on this page were taken, nearly every campsite was filled with families who had already spent an overnight in preparation for the Fourth of July Weekend. When I asked one family where they were from, the mother replied, "We are from St. Paul. It's only a 40-minute drive to this campground. We love the lake." In addition to the pristine lake and sandy beach, other amenities for the campers include a playground, picnic tables, firepits, bathroom facilities, and the availability of firewood. Every now and then, I wonder why I haven't thought of something before. After another moment of thought, I realize it's because we're not made to think of everything and remember everything 24/7. We don't have that kind of space up there. There's only enough space to get through one lifetime, and there are always blank spaces in a lifetime. And so for the first time in many years, I made salmon cakes for dinner and fried them up delicious and crispy with thousand island sauce on the side. Just delicious. I'm going to do it again soon! I can't believe I hadn't remembered to make them for so many years! I guess I got hung up on broiled fresh salmon filets. When I dipped into the minnow bucket this month, I pulled up Bonnie Wagener of Waconia to win the ten dollar drawing. Hi, Bonnie. I haven't see you for a while. Congratulations. Yes, I hid the fishhook around the tire of the Pacifica parked the wrong way in front of the Victoria Post Office. There's another fishhook hiding in this issue of the Gazette. If you find it and wish to be part of the next drawing, email Sue@Victoria Gazette.com telling of its location. Or you can drop a line to P.O. Box 387, Victoria, MN 55386 and sinker in the mail. Don't forget the stamp. And don't forget to make salmon patties, for a change of pace.

Take the worry out of winter..

Display ads in the paper edition of the

Victoria Gazette are charged at the rate

of $5 per column inch. A full page ad is four

columns (10”) wide and 15” high. There is no price reduction for

running more than one ad in an issue nor for running an ad on a regular

monthly basis because the $5.00 price can’t be beat as it is. There are

sometimes extra charges for photos ($5 to $10 each when they have to

be separately retrieved) and for ad layout and design ($5 to $50). The

only color option available is black and white. Camera ready pdf’s and

high resolution jpg’s work great. Average monthly deadline is the 22nd

of each month for printing and mailing near the 1st of the month. It’s

almost always the fourth Monday of the preceding month.

Political ads and announcements must

be prepaid and polite. The Gazette avoids

advertisements, announcements, and letters that contain distasteful and

wrongheaded insinuations or personal attacks. The Gazette avoids half-

truths and will not provide a platform to hoodwink or misinform

citizens. Short letters on behalf of a candidate are published without

charge. Long letters are edited. Number of letters is limited. No letters

considered unless the candidate also advertises in the Gazette, prepaid

and polite.

Sample ad sizes:

Economical ad space (5” wide x 3” high): $30

Common ad space (5” wide x 4” high): $40

More Common ad space (5” x 5”): $50

Popular ad space (5” wide x 7.5” high): $75

Half page ad: (5” wide x 15” high) or (10” wide x 7.5” high): $150

Full page ad space (10” wide x 15”high): $300

No inserts. A full page ad is better than an insert. In the opinion of the

Gazette, an insert is like a pop-up ad that you want to avoid.

No credit cards. Mail check to: The Victoria Gazette

P.O. Box 387

Victoria, MN 55386
