Introduction

A notable feature of Dublin City life from the mid-seventeenth century onwards was the presence of small butcompact groups of Dissenting Protestants, that is, thosedistinct from the Established Anglican Church of Ireland.1

These Dissenters included various kinds of Presbyterians, aswell as Quakers, Independents, Baptists, French Huguenots,Methodists, and of course Moravians.2 The Anglican Churchof Ireland was until 1869 an Established Protestant Church, that is, a virtual arm of the state endowed with privileges andimportant powers of parochial government and tax collection.Although Dissenting Protestants did not suffer under the PenalLaws to the same extent as Catholics, it is not alwaysremembered that they too were subject to disabilities such asexclusion from high office and liability to pay tithes.

The Moravian Church today has about 900,000 membersin the Americas, Africa and Europe. The Moravians had theirorigins in a pre-Reformation Protestant Church called theUnitas Fratrum or United Brethren, a Hussite movement whicharose in the mid-fifteenth century in Moravia and Bohemia(now part of the Czech Republic). The Brethren underwent arevival in the 1720s, and because so many of their memberswere from the former region, they became known asMoravians. A Saxon noble, Count Nicholas Ludwig vonZinzendorf, was attracted by the beliefs of the Moravians and

settled refugee adherents of the church on his estate atHerrnhut in Saxony.3

Under Zinzendorf’s guidance, the Moravian Churchbecame a vigorous missionary movement, as memberstravelled throughout Europe seeking converts and establishingstrictly organised settlements modelled on Herrnhut. TheMoravians arrived in England in the 1730s, where they were atfirst greeted by some Anglicans as representatives of anancient Protestant Church, though in time this positiveresponse would be replaced by a more critical attitude.4

Some Dublin citizens on business in London in 1744were said to have been extremely impressed by the preachingof John Cennick, a convert to Moravianism. They thereforeinvited him to come to Dublin, and in June 1746 he dulytravelled over to the city. Cennick preached first at a BaptistMeeting House in Skinner’s Alley, succeeding in making asignificant number of converts, chief among whom was ayoung Baptist, Benjamin Latrobe.5 Cennick then proceedednorthwards, and in the years following preached withconsiderable success in Antrim, Armagh, Derry and othercounties. The Moravians had less impact outside Dublin andthe North, but did establish some congregations in CountiesGalway and Clare.6

Cennick’s mission in Ireland did not always run smoothly, however. In the first place the Baptists soon asked theMoravians to quit the Skinner’s Alley Meeting House, as theMethodists had offered them a higher rent. This obviously

galvanised Cennick and his followers into securing their ownpremises in Big Booter Lane, now Bishop Street. In June1748, a Dublin mob, probably the notorious Liberty Boys, attacked the house when a service was in progress, a reflectionof the complex sectarian tensions which afflicted the city atthat time.7

In 1754 the Moravians decided to build a new church onthe ground behind the house in Bishop Street, and thefoundation stone was laid on 11 September. A temporary burialground was also prepared behind the church, in which a totalof five children were interred.8 A desire to possess a separateburial place was realised in 1764, when a plot of land atWhitechurch, County Dublin, measuring 2 roods 4½ perches, was leased for 298 years at an annual rent of £2 sterling fromcongregation member Moses Verney, with Jonathan Binnsacting as lessee in trust for the Moravians.9 The WhitechurchCemetery was enlarged by a half acre in 1776 and in 1874 thepresent entrance gate was constructed.10

The first burial took place in the new WhitechurchCemetery on 29 April 1764, being that of the minister JohnTeltschig (or Toeltschig).11 Teltschig was a native of Moraviaand had resided at Herrnhut before embarking on missionarywork.12 Teltschig’s original gravestone at Whitechurch hasbeen replaced by a replica, and it is assumed that the originalis in safe keeping.13 Other ministers buried at Whitechurchinclude Zacharias Caries died 1772, Jacob Eberle died 1876,

John Hartley died 1811, Theophilus Zippel died 1881, andinterestingly two females, Martha Schneider died 1770 andSarah Steinhauer died 1772.14

For a time, the Moravians also had a second Dublinchurch in Stafford Street, but this was closed in 1777.15 TheBishop Street Church remained in use until it was supersededin the late nineteenth century by a new red brick buildingfacing on to Kevin Street, which runs parallel to Bishop Street.Dwindling numbers caused the Moravians to dispose of theirBishop Street/Kevin Street premises in 1959, but the DublinCongregation continued to meet at various other locationsuntil it was disbanded in 1980. The Kevin Street Church hasbeen put to various uses religious and commercial over theyears, and remarkably, given the loss of so many historicDublin buildings, the old Bishop Street Church has survived.Having being utilised for many years as a warehouse, theBishop Street structure has now been incorporated in an officedevelopment.

The picturesque Moravian Cemetery in Whitechurch,County Dublin, which adjoins Whitechurch Church of IrelandVicarage, inevitably attracts the curiosity of those walkingpast.16 Through the gate of the still neatly tended graveyardcan be seen regular rows of compact gravestones dating fromthe 1760s on, each one about 12 by 18 inches (31 by 46centimetres), with males buried on one side and females on theother. This compactness and the foreshortened view havegiven rise to the legend that Moravians are interred standingup, but of course there is no truth in this! Certainly theseparation of males and females in death reflects the ratherstern division of the sexes in Moravian congregations. Thusseparate dwellings were kept for ‘single brethren’ and ‘single

sisters’, called ‘choir houses’, and frequently there were alsoresidences for widows.17

During the years 1985-90, with the permission of the lateReverend John Berry, the writer and his wife MargaretMcGinn copied the memorial inscriptions in WhitechurchCemetery, stopping at 1900. There is a total of 629 memorialsto that year, 273 on the left or male side and 356 on the rightor female side (there are an additional 73 memorials datingbetween 1901-90). Eight of the memorials have more than onename inscribed, usually siblings or children buried withmothers, and there are 5 males buried on the female side of thecemetery. Taking account of these departures from the norm, the inscriptions presented below refer to a total of 638individuals, 282 or 44% male and 356 or 56% female, indicating a clear preponderance of females over males in theDublin Moravian Congregation.

Each stone is inscribed with minimal but neverthelessgenealogically informative details, usually name of deceased(but rarely any address), date of death with date of birth or elseage at death, as well as number of stone, and in the case of theearlier memorials, frequently also abbreviations indicatingmarital status. The memorial inscriptions as presented beloware not literally transcribed, but given as far as possible in astandardised form. There are many memorials to children, especially in the period before 1800, and still-born infants veryfrequently appear to have been named Beatus or Beata(‘blessed’). A small number of those buried in Whitechurchwere born in the late seventeenth century, including ThomasFinley born 1693, Hannah Gilbert born 1690, William Grantborn 1697, Sarah Hague born 1682 and Jane Mondet born1686.18

The most common family names recorded in theMoravian Cemetery at Whitechurch are as follows: Alley (9),Binns (33), Black (10), Carey (12), Clarke (8), Cooney (14),Dezouche (14), Egan (11), Elliott (15), Gordon (10), Jones (8),Keville (12), Lemmon (10), Linfoot (12), Mann (8), Moller(8), Osborne (13), Price (8), Smith (8), Taylor (8), Warren(19), Williams (15). Most of these surnames are of Britishorigin, as might be expected in the case of members of aProtestant denomination living in Dublin, but there are a fewnames of Irish origin, examples being Cooney and Egan, withone presumably of Huguenot stock, Dezouche, and anotherperhaps German, Moller.

Those tracing Moravian ancestors will no doubt beinterested to know that the original and remarkably detailedrecords of the Dublin Congregation from the 1750s onwardsare among the archives of the church in Gracehill, CountyAntrim, with microfilm copies in the Public Record Office ofNorthern Ireland in Belfast.19 The writer finds it ironic thatalthough the National Archives of Ireland’s premises in BishopStreet in Dublin are only a stone’s throw away from the oldMoravian Church, one has to travel to Belfast to view copiesof its records. It would seem appropriate that the NationalArchives should hold copies of extant southern Dissenter aswell as Church of Ireland registers, leaving the NationalLibrary to concentrate on Catholic registers.

Burials are listed chronologically in the Dublin MoravianChurch Books, and in the case of a number of semilegible orillegible inscriptions in Whitechurch, the reading wascompleted by checking the microfilm copies of these registers. It may be relevant to note that the registers record a total of652 interments between 1764 and 1900, with a grand total of

720 to 1979.20 As there are only 638 individuals recorded onthe Whitechurch memorials for the period 1764-1900, thiswould indicate that some individuals could have been buriedwithout memorials and/or a number of stones may not havesurvived. There is also evidence that some members of thecongregation were buried away from Whitechurch, forexample, Catherine McLaine, born 26 December 1716, died 5June 1799, who was interred in the burial ground at the end ofCathedral Lane in Dublin (known as the Cabbage Garden),‘where her late husband lies’.21

The following are yearly average burials calculated fromthe Church Books, which even allowing for improvement inmortality rates, indicate a progressive decline in the size of thecongregation.

Average yearly burials 1764-1799 7.9 1800-1849 5.0 1850-1899 2.3 1900-1979 0.9

It was recorded that there was a total of 238 individuals in theMoravian Dublin congregation in 1788 but this had fallen to110 a century later in 1888.22

The Moravian Church Books contain a remarkable levelof detail beyond the usual listing of baptisms, marriages andburials, and it would certainly be very desirable if theserecords could be digitised for the benefit of genealogical andhistorical researchers. A few case studies abstracted mainlyfrom the register of members are presented here in order todemonstrate the quality of content in the Moravian archives.

The above mentioned Jonathan Binns is described ashaving been born in Dublin on 17 September 1720, religion

Baptist, trade ironmonger, was ‘awakened’ by Brother Cennickin 1746 and received into the congregation in 1750, marriedfirstly Ann Emerson in 1745 and secondly Ann Verney in1764, was excluded from and readmitted to the congregationat some point, ‘departed this life’ 21 July 1786 and was buriedon the 24th.23 It is recorded that Jonathan Binns’s wife AnnVerney was born in Dublin 26 October 1744, daughter ofMoses Verney, and had seven sons and nine daughters, oneborn after her husband’s death.24 The United Irishman JohnBinns (1772-1860) was a grandson of Jonathan, but does notappear to have been very prominent in the affairs of theMoravian Church.25 Moses Verney, who is also mentionedabove, is recorded as having been born in Sunderland nearNewcastle on 23 May 1722, religion Independent, andfollowing his death on 10 September 1800 he was buried atWhitechurch.26

Samuel Fairbrother is recorded as having been born inDublin on 20 August 1720, educated as a Quaker and baptisedin St Catherine’s Church, trade weaver, joined the Methodists1746 and received into the Moravian congregation 1750,married Elizabeth Hose 1755 and ‘went home happily’ 10March 1788.27 Alas, there were some who did not meet thehigh standards set by the Dublin Moravians, for example, oneGrace Bardon, born Edinburgh, religion Church of Scotland, who having been ‘awakened’ by Brother Latrobe in 1747 was

eventually ‘excluded for getting drunk’.28 While this level ofdetail is not to be found for all members, of course there isalso much information on couples and children in the marriageand baptismal sections of the Church Books.

There is one deficiency in the Moravian records, in thataddresses of individuals are not generally supplied, but thiscan be remedied in the case of those in a substantial way oftrade by reference to Dublin directories. Thus in 1780Jonathan Binns was listed as an ironmonger resident at 71Dame Street, and Moses Verney was listed as a papermakerresident at 21 Old Church Street.29 After her husbandJonathan’s death in 1786, Ann (Verney) Binns continued inbusiness as an ironmonger in Dame Street.30 While SamuelFairbrother is not listed in the 1780 directory, interestingly hismarriage to Elizabeth Hose in 1755 is recorded in the registersof the Church of Ireland Parish of St Luke, underscoring theadvisability of also checking Anglican records in the case ofDissenters.31

The Moravians are thus one of Dublin’s most interestingbut lesser known Dissenting congregations, and the memorialinscriptions of members buried in Whitechurch, CountyDublin, now follow. A schematic map precedes theinscriptions, showing males on the left, females on the right, with numbered rows and gravestones, which should facilitatethe location of individual burial places.
