Res Wireless Receiving Sets in Schools. (Free Licences).

Advice has been received from the South African Broadcasting Corporation, to the effect that in future schools will oe allowed to use their Wireless Receiving Sets for education purposes, provided that they are so used only during normal school hours for the school children and school staff.

Consequently, in future, it will only be necessary for the School Principal to certify to the undermentioned conditions when applying for a Free Wireless Receiving Licence or a renewal of' such a licences -

1. That the apparatus is the property of theschool^

2. that it is installed in the classroom(s)of the school.

and to state the numoer of Wireless sets and/or Loudspeaker extensions comprising the installation, for recora purposes.

There have been cases where certain schools have had to obtain ordinary Fully paid tireless Receiving Licences, as they were unable to certify to the previous conditions governing the issue of a Free Licence, but when these licences again become due for renewal, and the Principals are aole to certify to the two conditions enumerated above, their applications will no doubt be favourably considered by the South African Broadcasting Corporation.

No doubt you will arrange to notify those schools concerned of the amended conditions which will henceforth apply.

Dear Sir,I regret that this letter, in reply to yours of the

7th March 1941, has been delayed. This is due to the fact that I have been away from Cape Town on an official tour.

In regard to Maintenance of Native School Buildings in the Cape Province, all except a very few Native schools are the property of churches; these churches are responsible for the maintenance; the Provincial Administration pays either (i) a rent grant, not exceeding per annum on the cost of erection or purchase or (ii) 6/6 per 12i sq. ft. of floor space in the building - whichever is the lesser amount. $Payment of Sanitary Fees:

The Administration meets the payment of sanitary fees levied by a local authority, providing that the necessary funds are available.Equipment:

The cost of equipment is met by the Administration up to the limit of funds provided by the Native Affairs Department.Teachers* text books and scholars books:

In regard to scholars' books, 5056 remission is granted. Ordinary teachers* text books are supplied free, but only where a number of the same books are purchased by the scholars.

KE: TEACHER G.S. MTETWA.With reference to your letter of the

31st March, 1941, I am directed to inform you that the above teacher obtained his provisional certificate in 1936 and was awarded the final certificate in 1939.

Increments were paid to teachers who, during the period 1st April, 1940, to the 1st April, 1941, had completed three years unbroken service since receiving their previous increment.

In view of £he fact that Mtetwa was given his latest increment in August , 1939, he is not entitled to a further increase in salary.

This is a straightforward case and if Mr. Mtetwa had written to the Department, he would have received this answer and would not have found it necessary to write to you about this matter.

at you earliest convenience as the builders especially are anxious to get their money as quickly as possible and the other amounts have been outstanding for some time, while I have been waiting to get In the invoices from Western Township.
