*******************************************************************

Welcome to worship. Today we are using Evangelical Lutheran Worship, the

red book, found in the pew racks.

Introduction to the day: Stories of the call to discipleship continue as the Time

after Epiphany plays out the implications of our baptismal calling to show Christ to

the world. Jesus begins proclaiming the good news and calling people to repentance

right after John the Baptist is arrested for preaching in a similar way. Knowing that

John was later executed, we see at the very outset the cost of discipleship. Still, the

two sets of fisherman brothers leave everything they have known and worked for all

their lives to follow Jesus and fish for people.

Our supply Pastor for this weekend is Mr. Kristian Kohler, Graduated Seminarian.

Welcome, and thank you for leading us in worship!

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

In the name of the Father, and of the ☩ Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no

secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy

Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name,

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.

Most merciful God,

we confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have

sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by

what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we

have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus

Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may

delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name.

Amen

God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us

alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved. In the name of ☩ Jesus

Christ, your sins are forgiven. Almighty God strengthen you with power through

the Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts through faith.

Amen.

PEACE

The Peace of the Lord be with you always.

And also with you

WORD

A Reading from Jonah 1The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time, saying, 2“Get up, go to

Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.” 3So Jonah

set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was

an exceedingly large city, a three days’ walk across. 4Jonah began to go into the

city, going a day’s walk. And he cried out, “Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be

overthrown!” 5And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and

everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth.10When God saw what they did, how

they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he

had said he would bring upon them; and he did not do it. (Jonah 3:1-5, 10)

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

PSALM 62:5-12

5For God alone my soul waits in silence,

for my hope is from him.

6He alone is my rock and my salvation,

my fortress; I shall not be shaken.

7On God rests my deliverance and my honor;

my mighty rock, my refuge is in God.

8Trust in him at all times, O people;

pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us.

9Those of low estate are but a breath, those of high estate are a delusion;

in the balances they go up; they are together lighter than a breath.

10Put no confidence in extortion, and set no vain hopes on robbery;

if riches increase, do not set your heart on them.

11Once God has spoken; twice have I heard this:

that power belongs to God,

12and steadfast love belongs to you, O LORD.

For you repay to all according to their work.

A Reading from the First Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians 29Brothers and sisters, the appointed time has grown short; from now on, let even

those who have wives be as though they had none, 30and those who mourn as

though they were not mourning, and those who rejoice as though they were not

rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no possessions, 31and those who

deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present form of

this world is passing away.

(1 Corinthians 7:29-31)

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gospel Mark 1: 14 – 20

The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark. Glory to you, O Lord.

14Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of

God, 15and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near;

repent, and believe in the good news.”

16As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother

Andrew casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. 17And Jesus said to

them, “Follow me and I will make you fish for people.” 18And immediately they left

their nets and followed him. 19As he went a little farther, he saw James son of

Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. 20Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the

hired men, and followed him.

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ.

NICENE CREED We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made,

of one Being with the Father;

through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary

and became truly human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified,

who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYER

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION

Confident that God our light and our salvation hears us when we pray, let us offer

our prayers for the church, the world, and all people in need.

For the church in all its forms, for unity in Christ, and for those who proclaim the

good news in word and deed, that all trust that the kingdom of God has come near,

let us pray.

Have mercy, O God.

For clean water and air, for fertile lands, so that all creatures and people have

enough food, nourishing drink, and breathable air, let us pray.

Have mercy, O God.

For public defenders and district attorneys, for the armed forces and international

peace organizations, and for all public leaders, that those in authority work for the

well-being of all people, let us pray.

Have mercy, O God.

For the poor and oppressed, for the sick and bereaved, for those living with HIV

and AIDS, and for all people in need (especially), that your power and compassion

will be visible to those who need care and those who provide care, let us pray.

Have mercy, O God.

For this congregation and its ministries, for visitors in our midst, and for students

returning to school, that your Holy Spirit will guide us in all our endeavors, let us

pray.

Have mercy, O God.

In thanksgiving for those who have died that their lives of faithful service point us

to the steadfast love of Christ, let us pray.

Have mercy, O God.

Merciful God, you hear our prayers even before we speak them. Receive them for

the sake of the one through whom you have revealed your goodness, Jesus Christ,

our Savior and Lord.

Amen.

MEAL

GREAT THANKSGIVING

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places

give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus

Christ. By the leading of a star he was shown forth to all nations; in the waters of

the Jordan you proclaimed him your beloved Son; and in the miracle of water

turned to wine he revealed your glory. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the

church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their

unending hymn:

SANCTUS

Page 13: The Third Sunday after Epiphany January 21, 2018 · The Third Sunday after Epiphany January 21, 2018 St. Paul’s Lutheran Church 215 N. Warren St. Orwigsburg, PA 570-366-2316 ...

WORDS OF INSTITUTION

In the night in which he was betrayed,

our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;

broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:

Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.

Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,

and gave it for all to drink, saying:

This cup is the new covenant in my blood,

shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.

Do this for the remembrance of me.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come,

thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power,

and the glory, forever and forever. Amen.

INVITATION TO COMMUNION

We who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread.

Come. Be filled with light and life.

Today, and next weekend, the Call Committee will offer a survey to members

regarding our future pastor at St. Paul’s. The survey is anonymous and the results

are sent directly to the Synod, where they will be used to formulate our next Parish

take the time to complete this survey.

Thank you to those in the congregation who have completed the Transitional
