ACC Announcements When you want to paint or repair the outside of your house, you must first submit a request to the ACC explaining what you want to do. There is a form in the office or at www.pinewood-lake.com . Drawings and paint chips are helpful to include in your request. Have you received a violation notice lately?

We are aware that finances for many homeowners are extremely tight at this point in time. It is the duty of the Homeowners Association to make sure properties are maintained. We will work with you if you contact us to create reasonable deadlines, but the work does need to be completed. Under the new paint standard all recessed plane needs to be all one approved color. Woodwork trim color needs to be all one approved color. This includes front, back and side of house. Please refer to current paint standard for details. If you have questions, please contact Karen Jones, ACC Administrator at (703) 360-6212.

GARDEN CLUB UPDATE “Flowers – Flowers – Everywhere!”

With another successful Plant Plus sale behind us, the Pinewood Lake Muddy Hole Garden Club members want to take this opportunity to thank all of our loyal community residents who continue to support us with their various floral bedding purchases. As well as all the other customers … new residents and passers by, that were captivated by the multitude of color and hardy bedding selections at tantalizing prices at our sale on Lawrence St. Certainly, the folks buying and enjoying hot dogs and hamburgers, sold by the Swim Team, enjoyed the day as well. Jutta Caudill’s Memorial garden will be dedicated in May. Peruse the new design with its unique mixed material foundations and bedding shrubbery and floral input on the Saint Anne’s cul-de-sac. Want to come and grow with us and get a new perspective to the floral and horticultural world? Please join us on the first Wednesday at 7:30 PM in the Frank Holub Community Center. May is the month to step up to your welcoming flower bed! Stephen Papanicolas 703-799-4328

Our community storm drains have been identified with this label:

Discovery Channel documentaries show fish and wildlife that have been hurt by eating or getting tangled up with trash, mostly plastic items, that wind up in our waterways (for photos, go to: http://seapics.com/feature-subject/environment/ocean-pollution-pictures-002.htm.) Did you know that plastic cups, bags, six pack rings and trash gets in the waterways by being blown or thrown into storm drains? In Pinewood, you can almost always see trash laying next to a drain just waiting for the next wind or rain to push it in. Our storm drains connect directly to our lake. That’s why the lake looks so trashy right after a big rainstorm.

This spring we’ll honor high school, college and advance degree graduates. Submit names and future plans by May 14. Group picture for June Needle is May 14 at 7 PM in Pinewood office. Send information to the Pinewood office at [email protected].

(These drains are different from our household sewers, which go to a sewage treatment plant.) Then the trash from our lake flows into Dogue Creek, the Potomac River, the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. We have to be very careful to make sure that only rainwater goes into our storm drains! No fertilizers, paints, pesticides, anti-freeze, oil, street litter or pet waste. Pollutants that enter the water through the storm drain cause what is known as non-point source pollution (NPS) because no single individual or location is responsible, we all are! NPS is the major cause of pollution in our streams, rivers and the Chesapeake Bay. It’s easy to stop NPS by keeping trash out of our storm drains. You can help by putting all trash into our trash cans. There are many around the community. If you see trash on the street or the lake path, please pick it up before it gets blown or washed into the drains or the lake! Where does most of our street trash come from? Most of it comes from our own trash bags after birds or animals tear them open. Animals smell garbage more easily through the thin white trash bags. Please use the heavier and more effective dark trash bags. Make sure your household trash won’t blow away - especially recycle items. Put heavy items on top to keep lighter items secure. Don’t forget the dark trash bags. Please don’t throw trash into the storm drains. We can keep Pinewood Lake beautiful and save our ducks, fish and other wildlife from being injured by our trash! PS – I have extra labels and there are still some storm drains that need one, so if you see one, please let me know the location so I can label it. Thanks. I’d like to thank Christin Jolicouer at the Northern Virginia Soil & Water Conservation District for providing storm drain materials and Chris Ream for helping attach labels.
