Origins(according to tradition)

• In the midst of a plague a group was sent to Epidaurus, one of the greatest sites of healing and medicine in the Mediterranean.

• Also the location of the greatest temple to Asclepius

• The group returned with a snake, which decided to settle on Tiber Island

• Thus, a temple to Asclepius was built on Tiber Island

Importance & use

• During plague it was used as a hospital

• Built to look like a ship for its origins

• Common pilgrimage for doctors in ancient Rome
