Hopefully this Advent season finds you waiting in eager anticipation for God’s gift of love and hope in Jesus’ coming to dwell among us. It is a busy time, and there are lots of exciting ministries happening at St. Paul this month: The Advent Faire is on December 2, between services, in Morton Hall. This is an intergenerational event that involves craft projects,

cookie decorating, and great fellowship. Please join us as we celebrate the Advent Season! The Christmas Pageant is happening on December 16th! Monica and the children have been working hard on this year’s production. Please come and support them as they retell the Christmas story through word and song. The Preschool Christmas program is on Decem-ber 13th, at 6:00 in the Sanctuary. This is a wonder-ful opportunity to come and support our preschool. It is also a lot of fun to watch the adorable 3 and 4 year olds as they retell the Christmas story and sing songs. Please join us for this fun evening. Remember that we have 3 opportunities to worship together on Christmas Eve, at 5:00, 7:00 and 11:00. The 5:00 service is a children’s liturgy, and won’t be complete without YOU! Please come and cele-brate the birth of Christ as we hear the Christmas story and interact in a child-friendly environment. We also have worship at 9:30 Christmas morning. The ACG Club will have their monthly meeting on December 21st in Morton Hall from 6:00-7:30. Re-member, this is the youth group for our 3-5th grade students, and is open to all children in that age range, as well as their friends. We will be having a Christmas party that night, and look forward to spending some wonderful time together. Epiphany is January 6th (12 days after Christmas) and is the day when we traditionally celebrate the visit of the Magi to the baby Jesus. This year Epiphany falls on a Sunday, so we are planning and

intergenerational event to celebrate. Please keep your eyes and ears open for more information and announcements about this fun event. The Elementary Retreat is coming up! The event is the weekend of February 22nd at Mount Cross and is open to 3-5th graders. This year’s retreat is called Faith Quest: Journey Through the Kingdom of God. Please see the bottom of this article for a description of the event. We would love to take a group to this retreat, so please consider signing up. Friends are also welcome to come with the children. We will also need adult chaperons to join us, so please con-sider volunteering! There are so many wonderful ministries happening here at St. Paul. Please check out the rest of the newsletter for more news and chances to get in-volved. Advent and Christmas are joyous times in the church year, and provide us with opportunities to fulfill our purpose of connecting with God, each other, and the world. Blessings to you as you await and then celebrate the birth of Jesus and the fulfill-ment of God’s promises through the incarnation!

COUNCIL UPDATE - meetings of November 20 & 27, 2012

In an effort for the Church Council to stay more closely connected to the congregation each month a summary of the council meeting will be included in the newsletter. Also the approved meeting minutes are posted outside Morton Hall. Please bring any comments/suggestions/concerns to any member of the council - President Diane Niggli, Vice President Terry Hickey; Treasurer Myron Marzolf; Secretary Jan Flanery; Members at Large - Ray Abinanti, Lori Bry-ant, Jim Jordan, Sharon Seegmiller. Meeting Highlights:

♦ Beginning in January, the council will high-light one ministry board of St. Paul each month. Board members will be invited to at-tend the council meeting to present a 15 min-ute summary of their ministry plans and what support they need from the council and the congregation.

♦ The Malaria Campaign of the ELCA will be included as one of the suggested recipients of donations in the "Advent Ideas for Giving" letter sent out to the congregation. An anony-mous donor is offering to match all donations to the Malaria Campaign up to $5000.

♦ The council approved opening a line of credit. Quotes from three financial institutions will be

requested before making a final decision. ♦ Pastor Mark briefly reported to the council on

his Sabbatical. He will make a report to the congregation during an adult forum after the first of the year.

♦ An Epiphany Party is planned for January 6. ♦ An Anti Racism Workshop is offered by the

Synod February 28 - March 2. Congregation members are invited to attend.

♦ A Neighborhood Outreach program will be initiated to connect with neighbors of St. Paul on Pleasant and Lee streets.

The Church Council meets the third Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at the church. Congregation mem-bers are always welcome to attend and may submit agenda items for discussion.

Jan Flanery, Council Secretary

What is C. diff infection? Clostridium difficile (C.diff) is a bacteria that is found throughout the environment -- soil, air, water, human and animal feces. Some healthy people naturally carry this bacteria in their large intestine, but it is most common in hospitals and other health care facilities where a higher number of people carry the bacterial. C.diff is passed in feces and spread when infected people do not wash their hands thoroughly. Spores produced by the bacteria can live for many weeks, and if a contaminated surface is touched, a person can in-gest the bacteria without knowing it. Healthy people generally don’t become ill from C. diff, as the massive numbers of normal bacteria found in the intestine help protect against infection. When an antibiotic is taken to treat an infection, some of the normal bacteria are destroyed, providing an environ-ment where C. diff can grow out of control. This bac-teria then produces toxins which attack the lining of the intestine. Who’s At Risk: According to the Mayo Clinic, the majority of C. diff cases occur in health care settings, where germs spread easily, antibiotic use is common and people are especially vulnerable to infection. In hospitals and nursing homes, C. difficile spreads mainly on hands from person to person, but also on cart handles, bed-rails, bedside tables, toilets, sinks, stethoscopes, ther-mometers — even telephones and remote controls. The greatest risk factors are: 1) if you are now taking or have recently taken antibi-otics. The risk goes up if you take broad-spectrum drugs that target a wide range of bacteria, use multiple antibiotics or take antibiotics for a prolonged period. 2) are 65 years of age or older. The risk of becoming infected with C. diff is 10 times greater for people age 65 and older compared with younger people. 3) are now or have recently been hospitalized, espe-cially for an extended period. 4) live in a nursing home or long term care facility. 5) have a serious underlying illness or a weakened immune system as a result of a medical condition or treatment (such as chemotherapy).

6) have had abdominal surgery or a gastrointestinal procedure. 7) have a colon disease such as inflammatory bowel disease or colorectal cancer. 8) have had a previous C. diff infection. Symptoms: The symptoms of C diff infection include a low-grade fever, mild diarrhea (5 to 10 watery stools a day), and mild abdominal cramps, with some tenderness. If the illness becomes severe, so do the symptoms, with a higher fever (up to 104 degrees F.), severe diar-rhea (more than 10 watery stools a day, with blood), and severe abdominal pain and tenderness. Prevention: Isolating anyone who has the infection and preventing spread by the following: Good hand washing with soap and water by health care workers, and caretakers. If there is a C diff out-break, alcohol based sanitizers may not destroy the spores, so soap and warm water are the better choice. Cleaning all surfaces with a product that contains chlorine bleach -- routine cleaning products may not get rid of the spores. Avoid unnecessary use of antibiotics -- they do not work for viral ailments, yet are sometimes pre-scribed. If an antibiotic is needed, request one that has a narrow range and that you can take for the short-est time possible. Never take old antibiotics you have on hand just because you feel ill. As with most infectious diseases, the best thing you can do is to avoid anyone with the bacteria, when known, and use good hand washing technique al-ways. Your mother still knows best!

Happy Holidays to you from your Preschool. December is a short and very busy month for us. We have many activities planned. The highlight of this month will be our “Christmas Play” on Thursday, De-cember 13, at 6pm, in the Sanctuary. The children in Mrs. Richard’s classroom have speaking parts depicting the story of Je-sus’ birth, and the children in Mrs. Met-tler’s classroom are singing a song about the animals that were at the manger. They will all be in costume and will carry a star, light, wreath, teddy bear…etc. It will be so cute! You are welcome and invited to at-tend our play. On December 7 the Mudmill will be here and the children and their families will make traditional ornaments. This is our third year for this in-house field trip. We have lots of fun and the ornaments are de-lightful. On December 18 we will have a special visit from the Sacramento Zoo. They are bringing the ZOO-

MOBILE, with five animals and two showings to our school. One of our families is offering us this wonder-ful experience by a scholarship the zoo makes avail-able. We are so blessed! Happily, throughout the December weeks, we will experience Chapel with our Pastor Sarah. Also on

Wednesday we will have our Preschool Choir with Monte and Sue Hummel. Our break for the winter Christmas holi-days will begin after school on December 21, we will return to school on Monday, January 07. We continue to be blessed with good at-tendance. We are starting one new child on January 07 with Mrs. Mettler and are adding afternoon hours with several chil-dren now attending mornings. We are also receiving requests from new families and beautiful siblings wishing to sign up for our next school year.

Thank you for your continued interest and support. Sincerely, Rita A. Spohn, Director

PRESCHOOL DECEMBER NEWS

The Gospel of Jesus’ Wife at UOP on Wed, Dec 5, 2012 at 7pm

Harvard scholars said they have identified the Coptic writing on the above piece of pa-pyrus as being from an early ver-sion of the New Testament which suggests Jesus was married. Pro-fessors from Pacific's Religious and Classical Studies department will discuss the finding at a round table event at 7p.m. Dec. 5 in the Vereschagin Alumni House. Schroeder said that some of the topics the panel will attempt to approach include:

♦ What is the Gospel of Jesus' Wife? ♦ What does a fourth-century reference to Jesus

and his wife mean about early Christianity? ♦ Is this papyrus a forgery, and if so, why would

someone forge an ancient manuscript?

♦ Could Jesus have been married? ♦ Why does a text suggesting that Jesus might

have had a wife cause so much controversy? ♦ What does it mean to sexualize Jesus?

Pastor Mark is leading a field trip to this event if you would like to attend please sign up in the church office. We are meeting at St. Paul’s at 6:00pm.

I would like to thank all of my friends for visits at the hospital. It helped make the time go by quicker, thanks for all the cards. I’m doing pretty good now. Your Friend, Luella Dietz
