WSPTA Top 5 Issues Spotlight - Breakfast After the Bell Breakfast After the Bell Legislation would require districts to switch when breakfast is offered in high poverty schools from before school starts to after the bell. In Washington State schools impacted would be those with greater than 70% Free and Reduced lunch. The proposed 2014 version of “Breakfast After the Bell” legislation would expand break-fast opportunities to 400 high needs schools and result in 25,000 more students partici-pating in breakfast each day, totaling 5.25 million additional breakfasts served each year. Spelling Success! Kaitlyn Lee, a first grader in Mrs. Weiland’s class, won the Penny Creek spelling bee on February 26th after 10 rounds of competition. Her winning word was “gambol”, which means “to run or jump about playfully” and is a sixth grade level word. Kaitlyn will advanced to the Regional Spelling Bee of King and Snohomish county on March 29th where she competed against students grades 1 through 8 for the chance to represent our school at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. The Regional Spelling Bee was shown livestreamed online at The Seattle Channel www.seattlechannel.org at 1:00 pm on Sunday, March 29th. Out of 73 students, Kaitlyn made it

to the 4th round and spelled “capricorn”, “vogue” and “refray” successfully before being eliminated with the word “epitasis”. She outlasted 41 other students in the competition.Congratulations to Kaitlyn and to all of our grade level winners: Tanner in Mrs. Judd’s class, Dat in Mrs. Macdonald’s class, Sabrina in Mrs. Wood’s class, and Alison in Mrs. Bratton’s class. Enormous thanks goes out to all our wonderful parent volunteers who helped make the entire Spelling Bee possible, from preliminaries through the finals: Kira Monica, Julie Yamamoto, Melissa Tolle-Peacocke, Starla DeLap, Stacy Renfro, Alisa Yee, Andrea Rosen, Gia Lee, Debbie Cresanti, Katie Wilson, and my superstars Karen-Ann Olson and Cora Gefter for coming out on 4 out of 5 days to sit in as judges during preliminaries week. Thank you PCE teachers for your flexibility in allowing me to take over your classrooms during the preliminary bee, and Jeannie Fannin and Cheri Burkhardt in the front office always were happy to help me with organizing classrooms and sorting out details. Don & Michael our custodians and Mrs. Cheever provided the best technical support in the cafeteria-thank you! Karen-Ann and LeAnn Langston were wonderful as judges during the finals as well. All of this team was amazing, I couldn’t have done it without all of your valued and appreciated support. Mrs. Weiland and I had a wonderful cheering Kaitlyn on at the Regional Bee; I can’t wait to lead our school bee again next year. I cannot say it enough: THANK YOU! Penny Creek community for supporting our school and our kids!

Helping Foster Kids in the Everett School District Everett School District students in foster care need your help! Our area is currently in crisis with a need for foster homes for children and youth of all ages. Currently there are 216 kids from the Everett area in out-of-home care, but due to a shortage of open foster homes, only 119 of those children have been able to stay here in their community. When there is no room in local foster homes, children and youth must be placed in homes in other areas-leaving their local communities, sports teams, and friends.

Children in foster care need YOU! Training classes, information one-on-one support and are available now, free of charge, to help you take the first step toward welcoming a child into your home, either temporarily or long-term. Please reach out and be part of the solution for children in Everett who need your help. Call 1-888-KIDS-414 or join us at fosteringtogether.org.

Seussical Jr. – An Experience to Remember The Penny Creek PTA After-School Drama Program continues to be very popular with our families. This year PTA partnered with Edge Performing Arts and Dance to put together a production of Seussical Jr. Performances were held on March 6th and March 8th. 46 students participated in this after school program. This includes all cast members and stage crew members. There was a variety of Dr. Seuss characters represented from Horton the Elephant and Mayzie la Bird, to the Cat in the Hat and Things 1 & 2, to Gertrude McFuzz, to the Who’s in Whoville. Each student dedicated themselves to their roles and gave fantastic performances that have made everyone proud.

Jordan Day Meeker and Jonathan Olson, with Edge Performing Arts and Dance, were the show’s Directors. Their guidance truly helped our students learn their parts and be their best. Their support, along with the dedication of the students, and the help of the parents/guardians/families helped to make this program the success it was.

Thank you to everyone who helped with this program, especially the families involved. The program requires dedicated parent involvement and would not have happened without the parents and other family members of the students participating in the program. Special thanks go out to the following people or teams for their extra time as this program would not have been a success without them:

• Diana Snapp for supervising all the rehearsals.

• Melissa Tolle-Peacock for coordinating the free rental of the costumes, and coordinating the production of the posters, tickets and professional photography and videography.

• The team of Shandy Henderson and Kristin Harbak for creating and designing the pro-gram, including all the biographies.

• Heather Emans for taking all of the headshots used in the program.

• Melodee Campbell, Heather Emans, Holly Moe and Julie Peddy for making the program copies. Special thanks go out to Heather Emans for taking the time before Sunday’s show to get extra copies printed.

• The fantastic staff at the Everett Civic Auditorium for their facilities support.

• Melissa Dilling and Emily Cheever for allowing us to use their classroom space for our rehearsals.

• All parents/guardians/ family members who supervised an after school rehearsal.

All About Allowances From kidshealth.org

An allowance can be a great way to teach kids money management skills and help them learn how to make decisions, deal with limited funds, and understand the benefits of saving and charitable giving. There’s no single correct way to handle giving an allowance. Deciding when to start, how much to give, and whether you want to link the allowance to chores are choices that should fit your family.

Starting an AllowanceNo set age is best for every kid, but consider starting an allowance by the time a child is 10 years old. By then, most kids have had experience making thoughtful spending decisions but still look to parents for guidance. How much allowance should you give? It depends on your financial situation and what kind of commitment you feel that you can comfortably keep. Experts generally recommend that kids get 50¢ to $1 per week for every year of their age — $4.50 to $9 for a 9-year-old, for example.Regardless of how much you choose, give the allowance regularly and increase the amount as your child gets older.

Allowance and ChoresShould an allowance be tied to chores? Again, it’s a personal choice. Some experts think that it’s important to make this connection so that kids learn the relationship between work and pay. Others say that kids should have a responsibility to help with housework, above and beyond any financial incentive. In the end, you must decide what works best for you. Whatever you decide, be sure that all parties understand the arrangement. If you give an allowance for doing housework, make sure that your kids understand what their responsibilities are and the consequences of not doing them. You might want to involve them in choosing the chores and then keep a chart posted to remind them what needs to be done. It’s important to be consistent. Following through on your promise to give a regular allow-ance sets a good example for your kids and is incentive for them to honor their end of the bargain. If you don’t keep up with the allowance, they might lose that incentive and stop doing the chores.

Using an AllowanceHow should kids spend their allowance? It’s good to have them use it for fun things, not essential purchases such as food or clothing. This lets kids make buying decisions — and mistakes — without dire consequences. You might want to encourage kids to put away a portion for charity and another portion for savings. If so, let them choose where to donate the money. It may be a cause that a child can relate to in some way, like an animal shelter or a group that helps sick kids.If some of the allowance goes to savings, consider setting up an account at a local bank. This way, your child can keep track of the money. Many banks offer special bank accounts for kids, and yours may enjoy the experience of getting mail, even if the mail is a bank statement.

Beyond AllowanceOnce kids become teenagers, you might want to provide a quarterly clothing allowance in addition to the weekly allowance. If you do, establish a reasonable budget and allow your kids to spend it as they wish — but also to honor its limits. If your son chooses to buy a $95 shirt or your daughter opts for a pricey handbag, for example, they might have to make compromises on other clothing choices.

6 The Ribbit Report — April 2015 | pennycreekpta.weebly.com/

Good to know information on Head Lice Taken from the CDC website

What are head lice? The head louse, or Pediculus humanus capitis, is a parasitic insect that can be found on the head, eyebrows, and eyelashes of people. Head lice feed on human blood several time a day and live close to the human scalp. Head lice are not known to spread disease.

Who is at risk for getting head lice? Head lice are found worldwide. In the United States, infestation with head lice is most common among pre-school children attending child care, elementary schoolchildren, and the household members of infested children. Although reliable data on how many people in the United States get head lice each year are not available, an estimated 6 million to 12 million infestations occur each year in the United States among children 3 to 11 years of age. In the United States, infestation with head lice is much less common among African-Americans than among persons of other races, possibly because the claws of the of the head louse found most frequently in the United States are better adapted for grasping the shape and width of the hair shaft of other races. Head lice move by crawling; they cannot hop or fly. Head lice are spread by direct contact with the hair of an infested person. Anyone who comes in head-to-head contact with someone who already has head lice is at greatest risk. Spread by contact with clothing (such as hats, scarves, coats) or other personal items (such as combs, brushes, or towels) used by an infested person is uncommon. Personal hygiene or cleanliness in the home or school has nothing to do with getting head lice.

What do head lice look like? Head lice have three forms: the egg (also called a nit), the nymph, and the adult.

Where are head lice most commonly found? Head lice and head lice nits are found almost exclusively on the scalp, particularly around and behind the ears and near the neckline at the back of the head. Head lice or head lice nits sometimes are found on the eyelashes or eyebrows but this is uncommon. Head lice hold tightly to hair with hook-like claws at the end of each of their six legs. Head lice nits are cemented firmly to the hair shaft and can be difficult to remove even after the nymphs hatch and empty casings remain.

What are the signs and symptoms of head lice infestation? • Tickling feeling of something moving in the hair. • Itching, caused by an allergic reaction to the bites of the head louse. • Irritability and difficulty sleeping; head lice are most active in the dark. • Sores on the head caused by scratching. These sores can sometimes

become infected with bacteria found on the person’s skin.

How did my child get head lice? Head-to-head contact with an already infested person is the most common way to get head lice. Head-to-head contact is common during play at school, at home, and elsewhere (sports activities, playground, slumber parties, camp).Although uncommon, head lice can be spread by sharing clothing or belongings. This happens when lice crawl, or nits attached to shed hair hatch, and get on the shared clothing or belongings. Examples include:• sharing clothing (hats, scarves, coats, sports uniforms) or articles (hair

ribbons, barrettes, combs, brushes, towels, stuffed animals) recently worn or used by an infested person;

• or lying on a bed, couch, pillow, or carpet that has recently been in contact with an infested person.

Dogs, cats, and other pets do not play a role in the spread of head lice.

How is head lice infestation diagnosed? The diagnosis of a head lice infestation is best made by finding a live nymph or adult louse on the scalp or hair of a person. Because nymphs and adult lice are very small, move quickly, and avoid light, they can be difficult to find. Use of a magnifying lens and a fine-toothed comb may be helpful to find live lice. If crawling lice are not seen, finding nits firmly attached within a ¼ inch of base of the hair shafts strongly suggests, but does not confirm, that a person is infested and should be treated. Nits that are attached more than ¼ inch from the base of the hair shaft are almost always dead or already hatched. Nits are often confused with other things found in the hair such as dandruff, hair spray droplets, and dirt particles. If no live nymphs or adult lice are seen, and the only nits found are more than ¼-inch from the scalp, the infestation is probably old and no longer active and does not need to be treated.

If you are not sure if a person has head lice, the diagnosis should be made by their health care provider, local health department, or other person trained to identify live head lice.

Do head lice spread disease? Head lice should not be considered as a medical or public health hazard. Head lice are not known to spread disease. Head lice can be an annoyance because their presence may cause itching and loss of sleep. Sometimes the itching can lead to excessive scratching that can sometimes increase the chance of a secondary skin infection.

Can head lice be spread by sharing sports helmets or headphones? Head lice are spread most commonly by direct contact with the hair of an infested person. Spread by contact with inanimate objects and personal belongings may occur but is very uncommon. Head lice feet are specially adapted for holding onto human hair. Head lice would have difficulty attaching firmly to smooth or slippery surfaces like plastic, metal, polished synthetic leathers, and other similar materials.

Can wigs or hair pieces spread lice? Head lice and their eggs (nits) soon perish if separated from their human host. Adult head lice can live only a day or so off the human head without blood for feeding. Nymphs (young head lice) can live only for several hours without feeding on a human. Nits (head lice eggs) generally die within a week away from their human host and cannot hatch at a temperature lower than that close to the human scalp. For these reasons, the risk of transmission of head lice from a wig or other hairpiece is extremely small, particularly if the wig or hairpiece has not been worn within the preceding 48 hours by someone who is actively infested with live head lice.

Can swimming spread lice? Data show that head lice can survive under water for several hours but are unlikely to be spread by the water in a swimming pool. Head lice have been seen to hold tightly to human hair and not let go when submerged under water. Chlorine levels found in pool water do not kill head lice.Head lice may be spread by sharing towels or other items that have been in contact with an infested person’s hair, although such spread is uncommon. Children should be taught not to share towels, hair brushes, and similar items either at poolside or in the changing room.Swimming or washing the hair within 1–2 days after treatment with some head lice medicines might make some treatments less effective. Seek the advice of your health care provider or health department if you have questions.
