Sometimes the scenes portrayed in the Bible passages that we hear read for us on Sunday are so far removed from our experience that it is difficult to imagine just what is actually going on; after all, what do most of us know about farming or fishing or fig trees. But today’s Scripture is not like that at all; what is presented is as familiar as what we do whenever we come together for Mass. The people gather; the Scriptures are brought forth and read; and God’s Spirit reaches out with the message that each one of us needs to hear. Perhaps we are not weeping like the people in the first reading because this ritual openness to expecting God to be really present r ight now for us is too familiar , almost auto-matically expected. Could it be that this is what the Spirit’s message is to us is today - not to weep, but to remember to rejoice in the presence of the Lord and pass on that vision that God is with us to the future? Our times seem to find it easier to believe in ‘real absence’ rather than ‘real presence’; it’s easier to be cynical about the lack of integrity, honesty, commitment and dedication that we are reminded of daily than to actually expect God to be pre-sent in the love and forgiveness and charity and selfless con-cern for others that also is to be found and experienced and hopefully pointed to and acknowledged as something holy in our world today. Jesus saw his mission as helping the blind to see; not in the sense of some kind of miraculous eye care, but rather helping all people to see that they were not meant to live isolated lives, that all people are connected and loved by a God who has promised to be always present for us. Jesus’ mission is now ours. Our common vocation as Church is to do what Je-sus did and bring Good News to all that we meet, whether we are old or young, involved in formal religious education or far removed from the classroom we are to help all people to see what we see as God’s real presence with and within us. May we each of us step forward eagerly in this upcoming week as messengers of God’s continuing Good News. Fr. Tom K

Fr. Tom’s Thoughts... Padre Tom...

Padre tom k

SCHOOL NEWS …..

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students of Saint Agnes:

I am a Chicago Bears fan and not a Green Bay Packers fan. But I have to admire how consist-ently our foes to the north have competed year in and year out. It’s that model of consistency that I see with our own school here since 1908. Day in, day out, year in, and year out, our teachers work really hard in order to help make God present in your child’s life as well as deliver the best education possible.

Recently, I spoke with Mrs. Simich, a former long-time Saint Agnes teacher. She connected via FaceTime with a Saint Agnes graduate who is now a renowned radiologist and prolific writer. Her name is Christine "Cooky" Menias. Cooky still remembers the lessons she learned at Saint Agnes. It’s another wonderful example of Saint Agnes consistency: our graduates remember their roots, allow the Holy Spirit to guide them, and go on to do amazing things to help change the world for the better. Health and Safety Guidelines: Recently you received information from OCS regarding temporary changes to safety procedures. Per new requirements, students returning from a five-day quarantine will need to be six-feet away from other students when eating lunch or snacks from days 6-10. Also, only students who return from a five-day quarantine will need to wear masks during recess for days 6-10. These guidelines will be reviewed in the near future and adjusted if necessary. Thank you. Absence Note: When you keep your child home from school, you need to call the school office and inform us. We have to keep track of all absences in order to monitor the health of the student body. Everyone has been do-ing a great job of keeping sick children home in order to prevent large-scale infection in the building. The office number is (708) 756-2333. Thank you!

¡Gracias!

Low Gluten Hosts Available For those of you who are gluten-intolerant and/or have Celiac Disease, we have low-gluten Communion hosts availa-ble. These low Gluten hosts have less than 0.01% gluten and meet the requirement of Canon Law for use at Mass. While a gluten-intolerant person may be able to consume these hosts, we strongly advise you to check with their personal phy-sician in advance. If you would like to receive Holy Communion with this type of host, please go to the sacristy at least ten minutes prior to the Mass you are attending and inform the celebrant or deacon. A low-gluten host will then be set aside for you to receive at Communion time. You will also be instructed when and where you will be able to receive.

GOD’S LAW Scripture has always held God’s law to be the path to human happiness. In today’s first reading, Ezra the priest reads the scroll of the law to the people returned from exile. They weep—then are joyful. Israel’s relationship with God had always been defined by how they kept and lived God’s law. The author of Psalm 96 likewise praises the law of God as the source of wisdom, joy and enlightenment, purity and justice. In his advice to the bickering Corinthians, Paul points out that, just as God has made all parts of a human body essential for the health of the whole, living as “Christ’s body” requires that each member be recognized as necessary for the good of all. Finally, in Luke’s Gospel Jesus claims that the Spirit is sending him to relieve human suffering. Like Ezra, he is reading from a scroll, proclaiming God’s “law” of mercy to those in need.
