A reflection for this Year of Mercy

“Merciful like the Father… is the ‘motto’ of this Holy Year. This is a shortened version of the verse in Scripture, “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful” (Luke 6:36). The Pope wrote, “In mercy, we find proof of how God loves us. He gives his entire self, always, freely, asking nothing in return. He comes to our aid whenever we call upon him. What a beautiful thing

that the Church begins her daily prayer with the words, “O God, come to my assistance. O Lord, make haste to help me” (Ps 70:2)! The assistance we ask for is already the first step of God’s mercy toward us. He comes to assist us in our weakness. And his help consists in helping us accept his presence and closeness to us. Day after day, touched by his compassion, we also can become compassionate towards others”(Pope Francis). Like all other dioceses throughout the world, the Archdiocese of Gatineau has opened up Holy Doors in our cathedral. The Holy Door symbolizes the extraordinary way that we can open ourselves up to God.

A special invitation to two diocesan events: Mark your calendars

Diocesan celebration of our Feast Day: October 11 is the Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, principal patron of the Archdiocese of Gatineau. Every year, we are invited to join our brothers and sisters from the other parishes in the archdiocese at a Mass at the cathedral to celebrate this feast day. Please join us at the Cathedral (245, boul. Saint-Joseph) for this Mass at 7:00 PM on October 11. During the celebration of this Eucharist in this Year of

Mercy, we will ask the Lord forgiveness for our occasional lack of mercy, both as individuals and as a church.

Year of Mercy pilgrimage for English parishes: One of the central components of the Jubilee of Mercy is that the Holy Doors throughout the world will be opened during this Jubilee year. When they are opened at the beginning of the year, "the Holy Door will become a Door of Mercy through which anyone who enters will experience the love of God who consoles, pardons, and instils hope." (Pope Francis) The English parishes of the diocese will be coming together on Saturday, October 15 to make a pilgrimage to go through the Holy Door at the Cathedral. There will be a 14-km pilgrimage leaving from St. Mark’s at 9:00 AM on October 15, and a shorter pilgrimage (about 2 km) leaving from Our Lady of the Annunciation at 1:00 on the same day. We will come together at St. Joseph’s Cathedral (245, boul. Saint-Joseph) to go through the Holy Door and celebrate Mass at 2:00. Please see our Web site for more information and to register for the pilgrimage. Please invite friends and family members to join us!

St. Mark’s Fall Harvest Dance! Come out and have some fun!!! Join us for the third Fall Harvest Dance, Saturday October 22nd in church basement; 7:30pm to 11:30 pm. Live music with Classic Country Re-Vu. Please bring your own refreshments (liquor license obtained) - Light refreshments will be provided. Tickets: $10 per adult, free for anyone under 18. Please call Brenda McGuire @ 613-797/0106 or Shirley Frenette @ 819-685-0576 to purchase a ticket (tickets also available at the door). Still time to register for First Communion and Confirmation Schools in Quebec no longer prepare children for First Communion and Confirmation. This is now done entirely in the parish. This provides us, as a parish community, with a good opportunity to echo our faith to the next generation. Preparation for these sacraments takes several months, starting in October. We have set up an on-line registration process to make it easier for parents to register their children for First Communion and Confirmation. We ask you to share the information below about registration with your friends and family members. Registration for First Communion (ages 7+) and Confirmation (ages 15+) can be done either:

• on-line at www.stmarksaylmer.ca (under Sacraments); or • By contacting the parish office to pick up a registration form.

Development and Peace On October 4, 2016, take action for peace in Syria Through prayer and action. Development and Peace is joining forces with Caritas International as part of its Syria: Peace is Possible campaign. Please join us for a time for prayer from 9:30 AM – 10:00 AM or from 7:00 PM – 7:30 PM, at St. Mark’s church. We will gather to meditate

around St. Francis of Assisi’s prayer “Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,” and Caritas’ campaign prayer. If you have not already done so, please sign Development and Peace’s petition asking the Prime Minister to act for peace in Syria. For more information on the campaign for peace in Syria and related activities, go to devp.org/Syria.

Operation Christmas Child Bring joy & hope to underprivileged children around the world, by filling a shoebox with items such as school supplies, toys, hygiene items etc. Each box will reach a child for Christmas. Boxes are found at the entrances to the church. Please take a pamphlet on the entrance tables which has instructions on filling the boxes and labels to put on the boxes. Boxes are due back before November 14th. For info call Shirley (819-685-0576). Thank you for supporting such a wonderful project!! Coffee Sunday Looking for volunteers to prepare and serve at the coffee Sundays. Someone is needed after the 9 am mass on the third Sunday of the month. Also for the first or third Sunday of the month after the 11 am mass. Please call Shirley at (819) 685-0576 for more information. Join our youth group! St. Mark’s has a very active youth group for youth over 12. Last year, they put on a talent show, participated in a NET retreat, did volunteer work in the community and had lots of fun! Check out the photos of last year’s activities on our website. You can also register on the website. The youth group meets weekly on Thursday evenings. If you want more information, you can send your questions to the youth group email account at [email protected].
