As we come to the end of the Lions’ Year, there is good news for clubs around the state. Local clubs have taken serious-ly the fiscal responsibility of dropping those mem-bers who have moved or who are no longer sup-porting their local club by participating in ac-tivities and paying club dues. That means that clubs who have taken this action will not be pay-ing state or international dues on folks who have not been a functioning part of the club.

The bad news? That means that membership has taken a big hit in the month of December. Across the state we have added 266 members since July 1 while los-ing 330—a net loss of 64 (with half of that in De-cember). District 17-N has lost 22 members during the month, while adding just 7.

Membership NewsGood, Bad, and Good

The good news? We have six months to pull membership numbers back up past where we began the current Li-ons’ year; the starting membership in 17-N was 1,961 Lions and now stands at 1,933. Clubs across the district added 89 new members during the first six months but there have been 117 drops. We need to ex-ceed that new mem-ber number during the last half of the year and also reduce the number of drops to surpass the starting figure. One way to reduce the number of drops is use the Club Ex-cellence Process survey to make sure the oper-ations and activities of the club are meeting the needs of members.

Meanwhile, let’s cele-brate the new members that came in during De-cember.

PDG Ted Hutchcraft has been transferred from Hiawatha Hospital to Mosaic (Heartland) in St Joe and was put in ICU yesterday with heart issues. Please remember with thoughts, prayers and cards to P. O. Box 199, Highland 66035.

PDG Joe Mayo has been transferred from the hos-pital to a facility for therapy. He is at Brookdale, for-merly Sweet Life, at Johnson drive and Rosehill. He is doing well with a wheelchair and doing therapy. Please remember with thoughts, prayers and cards to 11202 W. 69th Street, Shawnee, 66203.

April Powls, a 6th grade student at Westphalia El-ementary School, has taken the first step to becom-ing an internationally recognized artist by winning a District competition sponsored by the Kansas District 17 “N” Lions Clubs. April won her local competition sponsored by the Westphalia Li-ons Club.

April’s poster was among more than 450,000 entries submitted worldwide in the annual Lions Inter-national Peace Poster Contest. Lions Clubs International is spon-soring the program to emphasize the importance of world peace to young peo-ple everywhere.

“Peace, love and understand-ing soothes the soul and hugs the world,” the 12-year-old from Garnett, Ks. said. The post-er was selected by Larry Cannon, Bax-ter Springs Middle School Art Instruc-tor for its originali-ty, artistic merit and portrayal of the contest theme, “Peace, Love and Understanding.” The judg-ing was held on Nov. 25, 2014 at Baxter Springs. Lion Sue Gast of Baxter Springs, Dist. “N” Peace Poster Chairperson col-lected the posters and arranged for the judging.

District Governor Gene Allen said he was im-pressed by the expression and creativity of the stu-dents of District 17 “N” that submitted posters for the contest. “It is obvious that these young people have strong ideas about what peace means to them. I’m so proud that we were able to provide them with the opportunity to share their visions.”

April’s poster will advance to the state level of competition to be judged along with other district

winners from across the State of Kansas. The winner of the state competition will advance to the interna-tional levels of competition if (he/she) is declared the

Kansas 1st place winner. As a District winner April will be invited to attend the Mid

Winter Rally in Salina Ks. in January 2015 to be recognized.

Also placing in the District competition were: 2nd Place,

Audrey Ni, sponsored by the Wichita East/SE Lions and

3rd Place, Aricah McCall, sponsored by Humboldt Lions.

All three District “N” winners will be invited to attend the Dist. “N” convention in Pitts-burg Kansas in March 2015 and all posters entered in the district competition will be on display. Posters will be released at the end of the district con-vention to the respec-tive clubs/students.

Congratulations to all three girls on their accomplishment!

One international grand prize winner and

23 merit award winners will be selected. The grand

prize includes a cash award of US$5,000, plus a trip for

the winner and two family members to a special award cere-

mony. The 23 merit award winners will each receive a certificate and a

cash award of US$500.View past international grand prize win-

The Funnel cake and Tater Twister stands at the Arts and Crafts fair on a beautiful day.

Lion Craig making beautiful burgers at state swim meet prior to county fair making good use of our nice new concessions building.

The Hillsboro Lions club has been busy serving our community this fall. We had a successful county fair concessions stand in our new building we built last year. Then came the Arts and Crafts fair in Sept. and, with worries of rain mak-ing prepara-tions difficult, it turned out to be a beautiful day and we did very well on our big fundraiser with funnel cakes, bierocks and tater twisters doing the job of feeding every-one. We also al-ways appreciate the Hillsboro Leos club with their assistance in all these events. We have served two meals at our local “Circles” get out of poverty group this summer and fall, and made a good connection with those needing help and guidance. A good service project for all Li-ons to be involved in. We just completed our favorite

Hillsboro Lions Club

service project of the year with wrapping gifts for our local Angel Tree project. This a rewarding time to imagine a childs face getting a beautifully wrapped

gift courtesy of the Lions club. We have our traditional pan-cake feed com-ing up on Jan. 24th to kick-off our next service project of the year, which is helping to work on a playground improvement project at Main Street Minis-tries in Hills-boro. Also, we are planning our “Just Ask” cam-paign during

the months of March and April and hoping to gain a successful membership improvement. Lion Larry Funk Hillsboro Lions Club News.

Today I went to Hays and brought Marvin back to Smith County Memorial Hospital for a 10 day to 2 week stay there while they finish the antibiotics, wound dressings, and rehab/walking. It is nice to have him back here but we are interested to see if we can continue with the run of tests that are all negative. He does have a staph infection picked up somewhere along the way since Dec. 5. He has gained from 107 to 122 this morning. In fact the pants that he wore to the hospital would not fasten!! Great news. Last Thursday at 3 am when they started the antibiotic he was hungry and he hasn’t’ been hungry for a year! His antibiotics are 4 doses IV daily at 3 am and p m and 9 am and pm. That curtails what he can do for about an hour. He walked with a walker around the circular hallway in the cardiac center in Hays last evening. That is about 1/2 block and back. Keep him in your prayers that all goes well back here—the Dr. has him on bottled water thinking that the water has something to do with the diarrhea since he hasn’t had any at Hays. We shall see. At first they thought he was lactose intolerant and that wasn’t true, espe-cially with the milk he drinks all the time.

Don’t mess with this flu, it is stronger that most of

us. We still do not have the results of the lung biospy but think it may be staph infection also according to the doctor.

Thank you for your continued prayers these last 2 weeks.

Louise Greenberg

Kansas Leos “Strengthening The Pride”

MID-WINTER RALLY 2015JANUARY 16-17, 2015, SALINA, KS

It is time to plan for Mid-Winter Rally!

Overview: We will be meeting in Salina, Kan-sas, on January 16th and our time will be split among several differ-ent locations. We plan to start Friday night at a local church with board games and a lock-in. Some clubs will be sleep-ing at the church; some clubs will be sleeping at the hotel. The church is the United Method-ist Church of the Cross (1600 Rush Street) is where we currently plan to stay. On Saturday we will have some meetings/training, then go to the Ambassador Inn for the Youth Luncheon and our service project. Our ser-vice project will be deter-mined soon! We should finish about 4:00 and those Leos that are stay-ing are welcome to at-tend the banquet. ***IF YOU WANT TO AT-TEND INTERNATION-AL CONVENTION IN HAWAII, YOU MUST ATTEND MID-WIN-TER RALLY!!***

Activities: “Lock-In”/

Game Night will be on Friday night. Bring board games and a snack to share. We will order in pizza. On Saturday, we plan to have meetings in the morning, youth recognition luncheon, a service project, and Sat-urday evening banquet.

Projects: This is still being finalized. More on this as soon as I know!!

Ac c o m m o d at i o n s : Friday: Church of the Cross, 1600 Rush Street, 785-825-5170; Saturday: Ambassador Inn, 1616 West Crawford, Salina, KS 67401, 785-823-1739

Registration/Meals: Meal reservations must be made directly to con-vention planners. (See last page). We will be “officially” participating in the youth recognition luncheon on Saturday, but the evening banquet will be optional. Lunch is normally $15.00 per person, but Leos pay only $7.50 each. The Kansas Lions Foundation is pay-ing the difference. The banquet is $16.00 per

person and is a “dress-up, sit-down” dinner. Meal reservations are due by January 9, 2015.

Costs: The only costs will be for accommoda-tions (if staying at hotel) and the two meals listed above. Pizza on Friday and donuts/ juice on Sat-urday morning will be provided.

Friday Night: For those Leos who are able to attend the “lock-in”, bring your favorite board games. Also, bring snacks to share: If your last name starts with the letters A – H, bring some-thing “sweet.” If your last name starts with the let-ters I – Q, bring some-thing “salty.” If your last name starts with the letters R – Z, bring bev-erages (soda, water, ca-pri sun, etc. – preferably beverages that are “single serving” as opposed to large bottles)

Other Important Info:*Each club is asked to

bring items for the hos-pitality room. We will be sharing with the Lions.

*ATTIRE: PLEASE wear your club t-shirts, if you have them, for Satur-day’s daytime activities. We will be in front of Li-ons and the public all day long, and it is important for them to see who we are. Saturday evening dress REALLY should be

a dress-up type of out-fit. (NOT jeans, t-shirt, etc.) This is a semi-for-mal/formal event for the Lions and Lion dignitar-ies will be present. It is VERY important that we show our respect by ap-propriate dress. This also makes an impression on the Lions who support us in so many ways. If you have questions about this issue, please contact Mrs. Kerns. (see contact info below.)

***PLEASE be sure to let Mrs. Heersche know your registration infor-mation (who and how many from your club are coming) in addition to sending it to the “official” registration folks. This is important in planning of other activities and events (and donuts!). A simple email would be GREAT!!

2015 International Lions ConventionLeo Trip Preliminary InformationJune 25th – July 2nd, 2015. Honolulu, HI, (SUBJECT TO CHANGE)

This document con-tains preliminary infor-mation regarding Kansas Leos attending Interna-tional Lions convention in Honolulu, Hawaii this summer. Some things are already determined while other items are tentative. The purpose of this docu-ment is to provide enough information for clubs to decide whether it is work-able for them to attend this convention. For ac-tual registration and oth-er forms, or for additional information, please con-tact State Leo Co-Chair Cheryl Kerns. Contact information is at the end. The registration packet will include a registration form, insurance form, emergency information, and trip expectations. In-formation in this docu-ment is subject to change.

**We will by travel-ing by plane from Kansas City to Honolulu for this year’s International Lions/Leo convention. The cost of the airfare alone is ap-proximately $1200. Res-ervations will be made as a group and the $1200 de-posit is NON-REFUND-ABLE. The $1200 deposit needs to be received by Mrs. Kerns NO LATER THAN Friday, February 13th, 2015. She will then book the flight reserva-tions and send out the of-ficial registration packets to those attending.

Age Guidelines: Be-cause we will be traveling by air, only high-school aged Leos will be traveling

to Seattle (this is the same policy, however painful, we had for the trips to Boston and Seattle). Leos must have completed at least their 9th grade year. Leos who graduate in May/June 2015 may still attend if they are inter-ested. Younger Leos are encouraged to continue supporting the club and working to raise funds for future trips (Chicago 2017). Finally, ALL Leos attending, regardless of whether they are 18 or older, will be expected to abide by the rules and follow the directives of all advisors.

Dates:Thursday, June 25th – flight from Kan-sas City to Honolulu. Wednesday, July 1st (ar-rive 7/2/15) – flight from Honolulu to Kansas City

Registration: Over-all cost will be between $2800 and $3100, de-pending on the number of Leos that sign up (we will try to have 4 to a room to minimize the cost). The fees quoted apply to each person attending and in-clude airfare, hotel, all

meals, tours of the island, and visiting the Pearl Har-bor Museum. In addition, each person must pay a registration fee directly to International ($10 for Leos and $150 for adult advisors and chaperones – if registered by 3/31/15). The registration for the convention is DIFFER-ENT from the registration to go on the plane with the Kansas Leo group. The International registration is best filled out as a group (one for each person, but do it together). This is most easily gotten from the International website. The instructions on where to find the LCI registration form is at the bottom of this document. PLEASE NOTE THAT EVERY-ONE MUST HAVE THIS REGISTRATION COM-PLETED BEFORE WE LEAVE ON THE TRIP. I CANNOT CONFIRM OUR HOTEL RESERVA-TIONS UNTIL ALL LCI REGISTRATIONS ARE COMPLETE! NO ON-SITE REGISTRATIONS WILL BE ALLOWED!!! Please notify me when

you have completed the registration with interna-tional.

Cost and Due Dates: We will not know of exact costs until we have the air-fare booked and know the number of Leos and Ad-visors in attendance. The price will include airfare, hotel, food, convention t-shirt and recreational activities while in Hono-lulu.

Advisors: If you are planning to send Leos with no advisor from your club or if you want to send more than one advi-sor, please contact Cheryl Kerns before you register. In the past, we have al-ways required that at least one advisor from a club go if more than five Leos were going. This is not always possible, so please advise us of your situation as soon as you know. We welcome advisors from all clubs, but due to cost, we have to consider how many are needed from a club so that we have room for those who need to go and room for as many kids as possible. requires more adults than we usually need so we will try to work with all who are interested.

Insurance: It is RE-QUIRED that all those participating in the trip are covered by their own personal insurance. There is no automatic group in-surance that covers us. If you have a Leo whose family does not have health insurance, please advise them that it is pos-sible to get temporary trip insurance through several insurance companies. As well, many Kansas youth qualify for Healthwave, a state-run insurance pro-gram for Kansas kids. There are maximum in-come guidelines for this.

Lodging: Hotel ar-rangements are at the Hy-att. Please note that we will be staying 4 to a room if at all possible to keep costs down. The hotel re-quires one adult per room so parents and advisors will be sharing rooms with youth. We will be walking to most activities or take the convention bus. There will be the opportunity to request roommates on the registration form that comes from Mrs. Kerns. There is no guarantee that this request can be filled, but the planners will make every effort to do so.

Meals: Breakfast is in-cluded at the hotel. Din-ners are all planned as a group and lunch will in-clude fast food and other quick and inexpensive op-tions. Leos will be allotted money each day for lunch.

Transportation in Ho-nolulu: We will primarily be walking to get to and from the convention cen-ter and to our sight-seeing

excursions…please wear APPROPRIATE shoes (NOT flip-flops!). We will occasionally use the con-vention shuttles as well.

Major Convention Ac-tivities: Among the activ-ities we normally partici-pate in at the convention are the International Pa-rade, opening flag cere-mony, Leo round-table sessions, the teen dance, the International Show, and free time at the con-vention to look at the many displays and for pin-trading. We will plan to participate in the ma-jority of Leo activities scheduled by the conven-tion committee. We are also planning to do a ser-vice project in Honolulu.

Service Project: As is our Leo tradition at dis-trict, state and Interna-tional conventions, we will participate in a ser-vice project while we are in Honolulu.

Sight Seeing and Rec-reation: Honolulu has a wide variety of activities and sights to see and en-joy. Several options are being considered for the short time we have. When you have registered, you are welcome to offer your suggestions about which activities you’d like to par-ticipate in.

Connecticut Teen Dance: The Connecticut Lions have sponsored a dance for any teens attend-ing the convention (band members, Leos, children of Lions). We will plan to attend this function even if it is the same night as the parade. It is a casual dance. The Connecticut Lions act as chaperones.

Tentative Itinerary: Please note that order of

some events is subject to change depending on the scheduling of Leo sessions at the convention, which is not yet published. Also, activities are subject to change at any time. As we get closer to the conven-tion, more details will be available.

Financing Your Trip: We will be doing our best to hold down the costs. Sources of funding might come from the districts and individual clubs. Leos attending and their ad-visors are encouraged to

seek donations from these sources, however, do not PLAN on donations. Be sure to let them know you are willing to make pre-sentations upon your re-turn. Your Leo Club may also make contributions or hold fundraisers to help with the costs. When holding a club fundraiser to earn money for a trip, you MUST advertise that this is the purpose (as op-posed to fundraising for service projects).

Leo International Pins: This year we will have our fourth Kansas Leo pin in our Wizard of Oz series, which started on the De-troit trip. This year’s pin will be the Dorothy and will be available for sale as a way to raise funds for your trip or for trading. The cost of the pins for Leos is $3.00 each. These can be sold for $5.00 to Li-ons and friends.

All spending money (souvenirs) is up to each individual.

*MAKE ALL CHECKS PAYABLE TO KANSAS LIONS FOUNDATION.

Think Warm! Think Honolulu! With cold weather

upon us, one way to stay warm is to think ahead to June and the Lions In-ternational Convention in Honolulu. The dates are June 26-30, 2015. Early bird registration at a cost of $110 is open until January 9; registra-tion cost goes up to $150 after that date. The link to registration is http://www.lionsclubs.org/EN/news-and-events/inter-national-convention/for-attendees/index.php.

Reserving your hotel room through this regis-tration process will guar-antee that you will be in

the Kansas delegation hotel if you take advan-tage of the early bird reg-istration.

Past Council Chair Hans Neidhardt has been able to provide Lions and band parents with a pack-age price that includes airfare, hotel costs, and other amenities. Full information about that package can be found on the Kansas Lions web-site under Kansas Lions Band: http://www.kan-saslions.org/Kansas_Li-ons_Band.php

Deadline for signing up for this travel op-tion (with full payment)

is February 28. If you choose to take advantage of this travel package, you still need to regis-ter for the convention through LCI. However, you would not reserve your room through LCI but would be a part of the group accommoda-tion package.

You can register for the convention anytime between now and the ac-tual convention dates—the price just goes up! However, if you want to take advantage of the package put together by Lion Hans, the deadline will be here before you

know it. Finalization of the trip depends upon the numbers who choose to go.

Plan to be in Honolu-lu and march in the pa-rade? Be sure to have your Kansas Lions shirt. These will be available for sale at Mid-Winter Rally.

A final though to re-member: Going to the convention will be par-ticularly exciting if Kan-sas has a candidate for international director! Stay tuned for updates.
