MV Focus Visit to the Malaysian Chinese Museum @ Wisma Huazong, Seri Kembangan, Selangor, 27/3/19 By Karen Loh 30 MVs and friends visited the new Malaysian Chinese Museum on Wednesday, 27 March 2019 at Wisma Huazong in Seri Kembangan. Huazong refers to the Federation of Chinese Associations of Malaysia. This museum is first of its kind as it takes the visitor through the history of the Chinese people who came to settle as early as the time of the Melaka Sultanate to the British Era, Japanese Occupation, the Emergency period and the Chinese here today. Through an interactive smart phone app, we can take a selfie with Zheng He’s hologram and watch various cultural performances as well as the horror of the atomic bomb being released on Hiroshima. In the exhibition we can see artisans, traders and labourers who came to work here, the hardship faced and the culture and traditional practices, education and way of life of the Chinese communities through the ages. At the end of our tour, we presented Ms Eu, our guide a copy of ‘The Chitties of Melaka’ and in return, she donated their museum book ‘The Malaysian Chinese Museum’ to our library.

ILHAM CONVERSATIONS The Selangor Journal: Jottings Past & Present, 4/5/19 3pm With Kam Raslan & Simon Soon Kam Raslan and Simon Soon discuss the Selangor Journal, published as a fortnightly newssheet over a five-year period in the last decade of the 19th century, for the European community living in Kuala Lumpur at the time. The newssheet included local news and on- going research reports, gossip columns and writings on other aspects of life in the Federated Malay States. From 1893 – 1897, it also tells the growth of Kuala Lumpur through some of its most cherished landmarks, from the gotong- royong project that created the Lake Gardens to the creative accounting that realised the city’s most iconic colonial building — the New Government offices, better known today as the Sultan Abdul Samad building.

ILHAM TOUR Historical Walking Tour, 26/5/19 10am The Padang, the Sultan Abdul Samad building, Masjid Jamek — what do we really know about them? Kesari Now showing in the cinemas KESARI is based on the true story of one of the bravest battles that India ever fought – the Battle of Saragarhi. The year is 1897 and the British Empire having conquered most of India, is now trying to infiltrate Afghanistan. Fort Saragarhi, in the NWFP (North Western Frontier Province) is a small communication post used to relay messages between two major military forts - Gullistan and Lockhardt. To be posted at Saragarhi is no matter of pride for the newly formed Sikh regiment of the British Indian Army. Marked in colour KESARI (Saffron), the Sikhs symbolize valour and pride and to die doing one's duty. Ishar Singh (Akshay Kumar), a proud warrior who prefers to live by his community rules, is often found in direct conflict with the orders of his British officers. As a punishment, Ishar is sent to Saragarhi where a bunch of 20 unruly, undisciplined Sikh soldiers await him. And it is this bunch of cheeky but lovable rouges that Ishar leads into the battle when an army of 10,000 Afghani Pathans turn up at Saragarhi on the 12th of Sept 1897. It is now 21 Sikhs vs 10,000 Afghans on the battlefield.
