The Screamer Anacortes High School PTSA November 2016
November 2016 Greetings Seahawks Families,
The students and staff have been very busy over the last month. Homecoming 2016 was a tremendous success with many students participating in a variety of events throughout the week – including our dance which had over 470 students attend. Our fall sports season is winding down and winter coaches are starting to prepare for another great season of Seahawk basketball, swim, wrestling, and cheer. Winter sports start on Monday, Nov 14. Please ensure that your student athlete has all required paperwork turned in to the athletic office no later than Friday, Nov 11 in order to be eligible for the first day of practice. Our fall drama production dates are Nov 10, 11, 12, and Nov 17, 18, 19. I hope that you are able to schedule a date, you won’t be disappointed with this year’s show. Student Parking and Construction Updates: On campus student parking returns on Tuesday, Nov. 1. We are encouraging all student drivers to use onsite parking. Neighboring streets will return to 2-hour max parking and violators will be ticketed by Anacortes Police Parking Enforcement personnel. I appreciate you speaking with your student driver regarding safe driving practices as our hours of daylight diminish and construction trailers / storage containers remain on site throughout the winter months ahead. Additional November dates to be mindful of:
Thursday, Nov 3 – End of first quarter Saturday, Nov 5 – SAT administration at AHS Wednesday, Nov 9 – Veteran’s Day Assembly at AHS Friday, Nov 11 – Veteran’s Day - NO SCHOOL Please mark your calendar for Fall Parent Teacher Conferences on November 21 and 22. Teachers will be available in our cafeteria during the following times: Nov 21 - Evening conferences from 5:00 – 8:00 pm
Nov 22 – Afternoon conferences from 12:00 – 2:30 pm
There are two early dismissal days in November and school will be dismissed at 10:45 am each day. Classes will meet as follows on each of these days: Tuesday, November 22: Periods 2, Advisory, 4, and 6 Wednesday, November 23: Periods 1, 3, 5, and 7 NO LATE START Thanksgiving Break: November 24 & 25 NO SCHOOL We have much to be thankful for at Anacortes High School – great students, continued parent and community support, and staff committed to student success, a beautiful new Rice Field (with purple track) and Veteran’s Memorial Plaza. Thank you for making AHS a great place for our students. I hope that you and your family are able to take some time off over the holiday break. Lastly, I thank family members serving in our Armed Forces and wish those deployed a Happy Thanksgiving. Our staff and students appreciate your on-going support in making Anacortes High School a great place for all. Yours in Seahawk Pride!

PTSA Co-Presidents’ Message Dear Parents, Students and Teachers,
November begins the “busy” months … can the holidays really be around the corner?! Our monthly meeting will be on Monday, Nov. 7 at 6:30pm in the AHS Library. The guest speaker will be Kecia Fox, AHS Assistant Principal and Administrator for Cap Sante High School. She will speak about Cap Sante High School – how many students, what special needs exist, and more. She will speak for about 20 minutes, and then take questions. Our major effort currently is the annual Poinsettia sale. We are taking orders for Poinsettias through Nov. 10. While this is a “senior” fundraiser, all classes can participate. The poinsettias are hearty and beautiful – comparable to higher quality than from any other source. We will focus on holidays during the month of December, thus there will not be a December PTSA meeting. In January however, we return with Eric Titus highlighting high school clubs, and in February, Maggie Thompson will cover scholarships through the Anacortes Schools Foundation. In the area of “appreciation” – students will enjoy a cupcake on November 18 … all donations are appreciated. And later in the month, our hospitality volunteers will show appreciation for teachers during conference week by providing dinner. We hope your year is progressing well. See you soon!

Attention seniors and senior parents/guardians: Please remember that the Job Shadow or Career Project graduation requirement must be fully completed by January 11th, 2017. Seniors who have not yet had their Job Shadow or Career Project Proposal reviewed and approved by their Advisory Teacher or Counselor, need to do so as soon as possible. Seniors are responsible for making their own arrangements, and winter break is an excellent opportunity for seniors to complete this requirement. Seniors in need of assistance are encouraged to speak with their counselor. Please note that an earlier reminder was emailed to all seniors and parents/guardians in late October. Presentation requirements do not apply to Running Start Seniors.
Rachel’s Closet Fund:
AHS has a “Rachel’s Close Fund” for high school students who are in need of clothing or personal hygiene items. Clothing items are at the Anacortes Middle School Counseling Center and are new or barely used. If there is an item needed that we do not have, we may be able to purchase it. RC Fund will also help with other fees if needed such as after school activities. The community service clubs and many individuals have provided funding for this resource.
Please contact the school counselors
Marci Fankhauser [email protected] Jean Lungren [email protected], Maggie Lahey [email protected], or to inquire about this fund.
SAT Testing: Anacortes High School will be administering the SAT Test on Saturday, November 5th. ASVAB TEST @ AHS: Thursday, December 8th from 7:30am - 10:30am: All students Interested in a military career are encouraged to sign up NOW to take the ASVAB TEST. ASVAB(Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) is one of the most widely used, multiple-aptitude tests in the world, developed and maintained by the Department of Defense. The test measures developed abilities and helps predict future academic and occupational success in the military. Stop by the Counseling Center if you would like more information.

Education Based Athletics Thoughts To Ponder:
REMINDER for Anacortes High School students -
You must show your ASB card with sticker to be admitted to athletic events for free. You can take a picture of your ASB card with your phone, and show the
picture to the event workers, in case you have a tendency to forget to bring it.
Your child’s success or lack of success in sports
does not indicate what kind of parent you are.
But having an athlete that is coachable, respectful,
a great teammate, mentally tough, resilient and tries their best
IS a direct reflection of your parenting.
