Transcript of The Morris & Gwendolyn Environmental Center is a ?· The Morris & Gwendolyn ... outdoor program...

  • Living Building Challenge v2.1 certified, achieving

    all Petals

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design [LEED] v3 Platinum certification

    SUSTAINABILITY FEATURES

    The Morris & Gwendolyn

    Cafritz Foundation

    Environmental Center

    is a place for people

    to connect with nature

    and to inspire them as

    environmental stewards.

Alice Ferguson Foundation2001 Bryan Point Road, Accokeek, MD 20607

  • Building Area: 4,000 GSF, half of which is dedicated to outdoor program space.

    Water

    - Achieved Net Zero Water to protect local aquifers

    - 94% reduction of water use through use of low-flow plumbing fixtures and composting toilets / urinals

    - Waste water infiltrates on site through a grey water drip irrigation field

    - Stormwater filters through a series of planted bio retention facilities and rain gardens to infiltrate on-site (less water runs off-site than prior to construction!)

    - No irrigation is necessary as all planting is native to the area

    Energy

    - Achieved third party verified Net Zero Energy

    - Real-time energy displays helps users make smart energy choices

    - Building orientated along the N/S axis to maximize solar and daylighthing benefit

    - High performance windows, doors, and continuous envelope insulation optimizes passive performance

    - All energy powered by rooftop 47kW solar electric array and solar thermal for hot water

    - Geothermal well field for heating and cooling (fans and pumps powered by pv)

    - Daylight and occupancy sensors for lighting controls

    - Ceiling fans and operable clerestories that efficiently promote airflow and human comfort

    Materials

    - All 450 materials were vetted to be free of hundreds of red-listed chemicals and materials that are identified on Living Building Challenge Red List

    - To support the local economy, more than 73% of the materials were manufactured within 500 miles of the site

    - Wood flooring and wood wainscoting came from downed trees on the site

    - Exterior oak posts were salvaged from an Amish farm

    - All composite wood products, except for the glulams, are completely free of any added formaldehyde

    - 100% of new wood used in the project is FSC certified

    - More than 92% of the construction waste was diverted from the landfill to be recycled

    - The by-products from the composting toilets are used for fertilizer on site
