Principal Points

I have very impressed with Kellyville High School over the past two weeks I have been relieving as Principal. The staff are working very hard and continue to deliver quality learning experiences. The students are producing great work and are engaged actively in their learning.

Three of our Kellyville High School staff were awarded on Monday night for their outstanding efforts at the Western Sydney Secondary Principals Council ceremony held at Girraween High School. Ms Joanne Jones received an Excellence in Administration award, Mrs Sue Abbott (Science Faculty) was awarded an Excellence in Teaching award and Mr Damian Wanstall (Deputy Principal, Maths) received an Excellence in Leadership award. I was pleased to be able to be at this event to acknowledge these staff efforts. Congratulations to all of the recipients. Citations are at the end of the newsletter.

I was over-awed on Tuesday Night with the high quality major works on display from the Visual arts students as a part of their HSC course work. It was very difficult to select which piece of art would receive the Principals award, but I was captivated by the life cycle of the rose symbolic of her grandmother’s life, along with many other great pieces by such talented students.

The Principals Award | Chantell A

Conceptual Artmaking Practice | Anthony D

Material Artmaking Practice | Madison W

Also on Tuesday night I had the pleasure of watching the music, drama and dance performances. It was great to see students withstand the nerves, and perform in front of their peers, teachers and families.

It was a pleasure to meet with the P and C on Tuesday night and spend some time talking with the parents. It gave me a greater insight to the P and C’s priorities for the school and their plans for how they would like to support the school in the future.

Warm Regards,

Mrs J Hawken Relieving Principal

GREASE – The Musical!

A LABOUR OF LOVE This year’s Kellyville High School production of Grease was a huge success! 13 teachers and over 60 students contributed an accumulated ten THOUSAND hours of their own time to pull together one of the biggest and best productions this little school has ever seen.

The talented Mrs Smith led her wonderful student band, featuring Ms Burr on saxophone, through an array of Grease classics. The art faculty, together with the tenacious Mrs Nash and Mrs Zammit and with help from the amazing Stocker and Dunbar families, pulled together the stage elements expertly. The hundreds of beautiful custom-made costumes, created by Mrs Bailey and her crew, contributed a strong sense of character and setting to the musical.

The performance was expertly directed and choreographed by Ms De Mellow, Mrs Richards, Ms Taylor and myself who breathed life into the world and characters of Rydel High School with dedication and panache. Grease was spectacular by all measures. The expensive and beautiful lighting, the colourful sets and the custom sound designs all came together wonderfully, providing a professional sheen to an already excellent production.

But the stars of the show were the students; the ever patient but fierce stage crew, the brilliant and supportive tech crew, the spectacular band, the reliable and level headed costume, hair and makeup crew, the incredibly sweet and talented ensemble cast and of course, the beautiful, caring and amazingly dedicated lead actors who went above and beyond to bring genuinely engaging performances to our stage every single night.

For theatre kids, the long days and nights, the multiple fundraising events, the hundreds of mini-disasters and the literal blood, sweat and tears were all worth it. So why do we do all of this? Well, “when we go out at night and stars are shining bright up in the skies above, or at the high school dance - where you can find romance – maybe, it might be love.”

Mr T Langford CAPA Faculty THE BAND The musical band for Grease comprised of students from years 7-11 and rehearsed every Tuesday afternoon from 3:15-5pm from Term 2 until the musical, as well as 1 whole week of the July school holidays in preparation for the 4 shows. They worked well together as a team, demonstrating the KHS values of learning and integrity throughout the whole process and performances. Some of the students had never worked as part of an ensemble before. They learnt a lot about working as team and watching the conductor! We also had an alumni of KHS come in as a bass guitar tutor, Gareth E, who helped Lara with her playing and TAB reading of the bass guitar parts. The experience as a whole was invaluable to all and I hope they continue to play and enjoy music throughout their years at KHS and beyond.

Many thanks to these wonderful students (and staff) and their musical skills that they brought to this band:

Kelly K Yr 11 – Piano/percussion Max C Yr 10 – Piano/percussion Lachlan H Yr 10 – Drums Gayathree S Yr 9 – Flute Lara D Yr 9 – Bass Guitar Daniel C Yr 9 – Electric Guitar Judah A Yr 8 – Acoustic Guitar Austin Barker – Electric Guitar Ms N Burr (Music Teacher) - Saxophone Mrs B Smith CAPA Faculty

Grease was definitely the highlight of 2019, and the whole band is grateful for being a part of it. The band this year was made up of a flautist, a saxophonist, an acoustic guitar player, two electric guitar players, a bass guitar player, a drummer and two pianists – and, of course, a conductor! We came together on Tuesday afternoons to work on all of the major songs in the musical. The last week of rehearsal helped us sort out scene changes and underscoring. Learning and perfecting the songs did take quite some time for us, but the end product was so worth it. We have made so many memories inside band that we will always cherish, and long-lasting friendships. We have gotten to know each other much better after getting involved in this year’s production, whether it be band, the ensemble, leads or backstage/crew.

The last night of the performance was a bit sad as it would be our last time playing together for the year, but we were extremely happy with the way the Grease music turned out. One bonus of being in the band was being able to watch the musical when we weren’t playing, so some of the band had memorised the actors’ lines!

All of the people who participated in musical got a chance to watch it in the hall. After watching Grease on a big screen, I can confirm that our band sounded amazing! Thank you to all of the people who were involved in the band this year and made it extra special for everyone.

The band is looking forward to our musical challenge next year! Gayathree S, Year 9 Student

Did you also know Emma S. choreographed the finale dance? Did you also know that it was an Ensemble member who suggested to run through the audience after bows? How about the fact that Lachlan H. improvised most of his jokes? Or Thomas H. always had an idea about movement and spacing?

These are just a couple of examples of how amazing it was to work and collaborate with students. ‘Grease’ has never been my favourite musical, but these kids have turned it into one of the most memorable experiences to date. There were countless times when I turned to an amazing musical teacher or student and asked "What do you think?" The 'creativity well' was always full because of it. The Lighting and Sound crew were also the most wonderful and professional group of Year 9 students. They adjusted under time pressure and were incredibly supportive.

Overall, I'm so glad to have worked on this musical! I can't thank everyone involved enough for their support.

"Being in the musical is so much fun! You get to be part of a family that you have fun and laugh with. Everyone is so supportive and performing is exhilarating!"

Duke of Edinburgh | Cox’s River The Award supports the next generation to find their purpose, passion and place in the world.

As they set out to explore and discover their potential, today’s young people face a broad range of challenges. If they are to succeed, they need the skills, resilience and understanding to help them take on whatever life may throw their way.

The Award helps young people to do just that – to develop the character and confidence to take the future in their stride.

“Put all excuses aside and remember this: you are capable.” - Zig Zigler

Last week, myself, and 23 other students went to Cox’s River for two nights from Thursday to Saturday as part of our Duke of Edinburgh program.

On Thursday, after departing school, our team hiked from the Explorers tree to the Old Ford Campsite. This hike was around 9km. Once we reached the campsite, we were given time to set up our tents and any other equipment. Unfortunately, the water at this site was not suitable for drinking, however, Mr Thomas kindly provided clean water for all of us. Following this, a group of us played a game of touch footy, boys vs. girls before having dinner, then settling down for the night. Thursday night was very cold and got to around -3 degrees, but thankfully we had a nice warm fire to get out of bed for.

On our second day of the trip, we hiked to Cox’s River Camping Ground. The hike was just under 10km, with lots of farmland and many horses. We had to cross a swing bridge over the river to get to the camp. The support of each other made us all so much more confident in doing this. The hike took 4 and a half hours, just arriving at the camp ground when the sun was setting. We spotted lots of kangaroos! We quickly set up camp and started cooking dinner before the sun went down. Unfortunately, this campsite had a fire ban, leaving us all anxious about the night ahead. We had a bit more trouble getting into bed this second night - we just couldn’t stop talking!

We woke up bright and early Saturday morning at 6:30a,, trying to warm up together, without a campfire. We decamped and prepared for the 10km hike ahead of us all. The hike back to the bus was a lot more difficult, but took us less time. This only proves that if you believe in yourself, you can do anything. After arriving at the buses, we were all super sad that the camp was coming to an end, but excited to be back in our own cosy, warm beds. The drive home was (unsurprisingly) loud and we all reminisced on the wonderful time we had together. The stop at McDonalds on the way back home made the trip worth it!

Of course, this camp couldn’t go on without our amazing teachers: Miss Mitai, Mrs Joyner, Mrs Bavaro and especially, Mr Thomas! We admire all of you so much and are so thankful to have you!

Jasmin M, Year 9 Student

This trip was well summed up by a few other students:

“Duke of Ed is one of the best experiences ever to come to KHS. People of all different backgrounds, friend groups and personalities. I had so much fun not really meeting new people - rather spending time with people I’ve met, just haven’t hung out with! There’s so much to do and it doesn’t matter if you hate camping or love it, everyone has the best time at the end of the day. This camp truly brought people together and creates a family within the group. I consider everyone here a close friend because although it was only one camp, I had the best time and couldn’t have done it without you guys. Laughing around the fire at 8pm when it feels like midnight truly is the best thing ever and you make lasting memories.” - Lucy K

“My favourite part of duke Of Ed was the camp fires. everyone was talking and laughing and just having a good time. Watching the stars at night was really magical and we all got really close. It was honestly the best time.” - Tayla W

I loved that we got to build our friendships with people that we normally don't associate with. It was great that we were off our technology for a few days, so we could experience other great activities away from our technology” - Yomal W

“You get to know people who you don’t usually talk to and get to know their personalities. It’s also a very action packed experience where you get to truly see nature.” - Tom S

“My favourite part would be actually getting to talk to different people I haven’t talked to before. It was cool to learn a bit about each other. The creek was lit too.” - Nathan T

P&C News Pre-Loved Uniform Donations The Pre-Loved uniform shop is run by the school P & C to assist students and their families. Donations can be left at the reception office of the school. Year 12 families are especially encouraged to pass on pre-loved uniforms to the P&C to support families and our community. Square The P&C now have the use of a “SQUARE” reader to enable point of sale transactions in the pre-loved uniform shop and at all other BBQs and functions. This will make transactions much easier for our community and enhance the ability of the P&C to raise additional funds to support our students and families. At the Next Meeting TUES 5 NOV “Think You Know” will make a community presentation prior to our next meeting from 6pm in the hall.

Following that meeting, the P&C meeting will occur in the Library at 7pm and the school leadership team will discuss trends in HSC data for Kellyville HS and the way that staff and executive analyse HSC and Trial HSC data to improve pedagogy and overall student performance.

I hope you can join us at that meeting!

Western Sydney SPC Hills & Parramatta Excellence in Public Education Awards Damian Wanstall Deputy Principal & Maths Teacher Nominated for ‘Excellence in Leadership’ WSSPC Award Damian Wanstall was appointed to Kellyville High School as Deputy Principal in 2012 straight from his merit selection from the Centre for Learning Innovation. Mr Wanstall is an outstanding and innovative teacher of mathematics and the students love his classes from year 7 to year 12.

He inspires the teachers at our school to innovate in their classrooms and feel that they can share their mastery stories for the benefit and development of others. Curriculum innovation has been led by Mr Wanstall in collaboration with other school leaders. He has attended international conferences to sharpen his own understanding of the mechanics of curriculum innovation and why it is important for 21st century learners. Our school is the pilot school for a student driven inquiry based learning innovation which he designed and wrote based on the work of Andy McNair and inspired by Dr Carol Dweck. It is a passion-based course chosen by all year 7 and year 8 students, embodying research and data into action – engaging and motivating students and the staff delivering that curriculum.

Mr Wanstall has led Professional Learning at Kellyville High since 2012. Mr Wanstall selects, develops and makes the best use of staff experience and expertise and promotes evidence-based teaching practices throughout our school. This in turn has created a school wide culture focused on continually learning how to improve teacher effectiveness. He has planned with the senior executive annual School Development Days and leadership conferences that are evaluated by staff as the best professional learning they have ever attended. He relies on their evaluations to constantly improve the quality of teachers’ Professional Learning. He is engaging as a speaker and able to weave changes into presentations to suit the needs of the participants.

As leader of the strategic direction team of Practice, he has successfully communicated and promoted the case for analysis of relevant data to support the positive behaviour for the learning framework at our school. He has modelled data analysis and used that data to monitor progress, set targets and make decisions.

Mr Wanstall has forged strong international links. He is about to complete his fourth tour of Europe and just hosted the eighth International visit from Shisui High School, Japan. While in Europe, we have exchanged projects on monuments, immigration and culture to enhance not only the engagement of the students but also an understanding of global community issues.

Mr Wanstall is completely committed to public education and public education is the beneficiary of his work throughout his career.
