Principals Points

New SRE Policy – SCRIPTURE at Kellyville High School The DoE has issued a new Special Religious Education in school and Voluntary Student Activities (of a Religious nature) – you may know this as scripture. There is an implementation check list and I am working through this to assure compliance. I have been working with the providers to implement the policy to the exact process of this implementation. It has been an ongoing work in progress since June 2018.

As with previous requirements, students will not be able to attend any religious activity – scripture or voluntary activities – without written consent of the students' parents and the proforma will be available at the parent and student counters at our school. This proforma contains an opt-in and opt-out opportunity.

During the SRE periods, the non-scripture students are not permitted to continue their regular curriculum. Instead the supervising teacher will ensure that they are engaged in “other meaningful activities.”

Voluntary student activities of a religious nature will now occur only on Mondays period 6 when students can go to this voluntary activity or go home as is the current situation, Regular bus services happen between 2.58 until 3.30 (approx.) allowing those students who have written permission from their parents, can travel home. I have been working with the providers to implement the policy to the exact process of this implementation. It has been an ongoing work in progress since June 2018.

Currently year 7 has been implemented and as each week progresses the older grades will be started.

I am also required to publish the curriculum and this will be on our school website as soon as possible under the teaching and learning tab. The next Muse will contain full school documentation for your advice.

Traffic Concerns Dear Parents,

We have had some concerns regarding after-school pick up from nearby residents.

Unless you find a spot in the “kiss + drop” zones at the front of the school, then council advice is to drive past and circle back to the front of the school or park in a designated parking spot.

Council rangers will be policing the school zone often.

We ask especially that you do not block the intersection of York Road and Queensbury Avenue, as this hinders the flow of traffic from either direction on York Road.

This has become a significant hazard to nearby residents and pedestrians.

We thank you for your continued cooperation and understanding.

Uniform Reminder

Senior students may be sent home if out of uniform.

Students who are consistently out of uniform, without valid reason, may be suspended for consistent disobedience if they remain defiant.

Students are expected to wear normal school uniform at all times.

Please note that the sports uniform can only be worn by students every Wednesday. Students who have scheduled double-periods of PDHPE are to stow their sports uniforms in their bags until these classes, and students are to wear normal school uniform for the remainder of that day.

This is as per Kellyville High School’s uniform policy.

Safety at School

Rules and policies are in place to make sure your child remains safe and well at school.

Therefore, in alignment with the NSW Department of Education WHS Management Program, we would like to take the opportunity to remind you of Kellyville High School’s current ‘Prohibited Items’.

For the safety of others, their property and school property, under no circumstances are students to bring the following items into school grounds:

• Chewing gum; • Permanent markers; • Liquid paper; • Aerosol deodorants; • Aerosol cans of any description; • Lighters; • Laser lights; • Cigarettes; • Matches; • Imitation guns or weapons; • Illegal items (sharps including craft knives, offensive and/or

dangerous weapons); • Drugs and/or drug paraphernalia; • Inappropriate or offensive articles of clothing or print

material; • Mobile phones, iPad, laptop computers or other

technological devices which may contain material or images which are illegal, offensive or otherwise inappropriate or which evidence illegal, offensive or otherwise inappropriate conduct;

• Energy drinks or highly caffeinated beverages; • Medication of any kind (unless parent/carer has registered

directly to the front office); • Water bombs, water pistols, or similar items.

Thank you for your continued cooperation and understanding. Mrs J Roberti & Mr D Wanstall Deputy Principals

YEAR 7 Camp

The phrase “Camptastic” was certainly on every kids’ lips! And on ours was “What can they achieve next?”

Our students showed determination, perseverance and were willing to go the extra mile to challenge themselves; with the majority of the students participating in all activities, whether it be a 26m giant swing, or abseiling down a 15m cliff.

The students motivated one another and demonstrated how courageous they could be with just a “Hey you can do this!” attitude.

A huge thank you to T. Moy, T. Brown, R. Darlington, J. McCallum, D. Maloney, V. Ung & G. Cheney for their enthusiasm and patience, as this camp would not have been so successful and enjoyable without their continuous assistance and fun energy throughout the long days and nights.

Their care, support and willingness to assist me in any way possible was highly appreciated and did not go unnoticed.

We all had the opportunity to bond with our activity groups and build positive relationships with Year 7, 2019; guiding them towards their personal best and motivating them to take on opportunities that they may have never encountered otherwise.

Here is what some students had to say about the camp:

~ “Personally I thought camp was amazing! The activities were really fun and challenging. The food was good and the cabins were great with comfortable beds.” ~ “My favourite activity was the giant swing because it was the most challenging and everyone was cheering me on and I had a huge adrenalin rush!” ~ “The Segway’s were my favourite because I have never had the opportunity to try these before.” ~ “I give camp 5/5 stars because everyone was having fun! It was funny to see some of the teachers dancing at the disco too!” ~ “I loved camp because I made new friends and I was able to try different things.” All staff can agree that it was a great start to the year and I am looking forward to what comes next!

SENIOR Dance

On Thursday the 14th of February, our senior dance students had the opportunity to attend Callback.

They participated in both dance composition and performance workshops led by senior markers of the HSC, and following this, watched the best of HSC Dance 2018.

This was an amazing day, where our students were challenged and exposed to great resources for their upcoming HSC. Well done to all!

YEAR 7 Student Profile – Madison R

Madison R is a Year 7 student at Kellyville HS, who has been doing gymnastics for almost five years with Kachance School of Tumbling and Performance (KSTP). She is a very busy young lady who trains 32 hours per week (7 hours per day for 5 days per week), which is equivalent to working full time. Yet she still manages to come to school!

Madison is No. 2 in the world for Double Mini-Trampoline (DMT). DMT is a relatively new sport which combines the horizontal run of tumbling with the vertical rebound of trampoline. After a short run, the athlete jumps onto a small, two-level trampoline to perform a rebounding skill, immediately followed by a dismount element onto a landing mat. Currently DMT and tumbling are not in the Olympic Games as it is not well known.

Madison competed in the 2018 World Age Group Championships in Moscow, where she won a silver medal in tumbling. At the 2017 competition, Madison won a silver medal in DMT.

Madison hopes to win a gold medal at the World Championships and open a gym for gymnastics when she is older.

Madison has an older sister, Emma, and a younger brother, Mitchell. Madison started cheerleading with Emma. But her older sister wanted to learn to do flips, their parents found KSTP for Emma. At the time, Madison was still too young to join the classes with her older sister. However, as soon as she was old enough, she joined the classes. Madison really enjoyed the classes and kept progressing through the levels and groups. The head coach asked Madison if she would like to go into the Elite High Performance Power Tumblers group. Madison was 10 years when she competed in her first World Championships. She was the youngest in her age group.

Are you wondering how Madison fits in her homework? She wakes up early Tuesday mornings or completes it Thursday afternoons.

Madison likes to relax in her spare time by watching movies, going out with friends or spending time on her phone.

From the ARCO

My name is Mrs S. Thomas and I have been working in the Kellyville High School Science faculty since 2006. I teach Stage 6 Physics and Science to Stage 4 & 5 students. For the past 3 years, I have been the Anti-Racism Contact Officer (ARCO) at KHS. As the ARCO my role is to promote anti-racism education within the school.

As part of anti-racism education at Kellyville High School, we celebrate Harmony Day every year. Harmony Day is a day to celebrate Australian multiculturalism, based on the successful integration of migrants from all over the world into our community. It is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background, united by Australian values. Australia is the most successful multicultural country on earth and each of us should celebrate and consciously work to maintain it.

Harmony Day has now become a part of KHS showcase day, a day in which all students and staff dress up in their traditional attires and show off their multicultural talents. Harmony Day at Kellyville is a happy day filled with rich and varied heritage, where students learn about other cultures to avoid racism.

This year Harmony Day will be celebrated on the 21st of March. During that week, the school will be carrying out some educational activities to create awareness of racism and how to help eradicate it in our community during the wellbeing time.

KHS has been working in collaboration with Community Migrant Resource center (CMRC), Blacktown City Council and some amazing parents in making Harmony Day a memorable one. I am encouraging all students who can perform cultural items to put your names in and to start practicing your items. I am also pleased to invite any parents and family members to the day. Looking forward to another successful Harmony Day at KHS.

If you need any further information regarding Harmony Day, please do not hesitate to contact me.

ENCORE Excursion

On Monday the 18th of February, the Sydney Opera House hosted the Encore performances for its 25th year.

Encore is an inspiring set of musical performances and compositions by the top HSC Music students from the previous year.

Ten Kellyville High students, ranging from year 9-12, had the opportunity to accompany Mrs Smith to view these performances. All of us came back inspired and motivated.

Two students from KHS were nominated for Encore in 2018 but neither of them made the final performance program. The moving performances sparked a deeper love and appreciation for all forms of music in all of us.

Student GAT / STEM Project

Last year in our GAT/ STEM class our group decided to undertake a project of building a working full-sized car.

Our first step was to plan a timeline and map our dates so we had a rough idea of when we wanted certain parts of our project completed. Once that was done we began ordering all the parts necessary to complete the project. Before we started constructing our car we had one crucial step left, taking the OnGuard tests. These are safety tests that we had to take before we could work in the woodwork rooms. Our first step in the building process was to measure and saw the metal bar that would make up the frame of the car. We then began arranging the pieces using a diagram we had previously constructed.

After we were happy with the shape of the frame we all learnt to weld using scrap pieces of metal as a test. Then we began welding the frame; first the bottom and then the sides. After welding the frame, we mounted the bearings which hold the rear wheels and connected the front spindles for the front wheels. After this, we wired all the electrical components of the car. We then added the wooden base on the car and began cutting sheet metal using the guillotine to fill in the gaps of the frame. Using pop rivets, we connected the sheet metal to the car. After we completed these steps, we presented our idea to principals from primary and high schools. We also met with the Deputy of Education to present our project.

We are currently planning the installation of safety features for our car. These include brakes, turn lights, headlights, a tail, a number plate, clearance lights, rear reflectors, rear vision mirrors, and a horn. This is necessary as we need to meet the legal safety requirements to be able to sell our car. Not only does this subject allow us to learn about mechanics and electronics but we also learn the importance of budgeting, legal issues and much more.

Our future plans include having a fundraiser in the school to get the money required for the safety features of our car. Following the fundraiser we will be installing the safety features and hopefully the car will be within legal safety requirements by the end of this term. We will design the exterior of our car and it will be painted by the visual art students.

House Council’s Health Challenge (HCHC)

Each fortnight the House Council are asking students to partake in a new challenge that may improve the health of their body, their mind, our school or the environment.

The first challenge is to drink at least 2 litres of water every day. Students from the House Council are enjoying using the new filtered water stations to help them with this fortnight’s challenge.

Max C Year 10

Max C is in Year 10 and started playing the piano when he was 5. He actually wanted to play the guitar but his parents said he had to learn piano before guitar, and he hasn’t stopped playing!

Q: Do other members of your family play music? Is it a big part of your everyday life? My brother plays guitar. Music is a very big part of my everyday life.

Q: Any special musical achievements in your life? I am rated no. 3 by Mozart in Australia. I have played with Marshmellow and was featured in his Fortnite concert. I wrote Ohio Fried Chicken sung by Jake Paul. I have performed at many school events and events in the community, including playing Christmas Carols.

Q: What do you enjoy most about your music making? The satisfaction that comes after completing a song with no mistakes.

Reminder – Use of the School Opal Card

One of the requirements of travelling on Hillsbus is the need for students to tap on and off when they travel to and from school.

Opal data gathered by tapping on and off is used to determine demand for bus services. If students don’t tap on and tap off, services may be cancelled due to the lack of recorded patronage.

With this in mind, we ask for your assistance in reminding your students that tapping on and off at the beginning and end of each trip is one of the conditions of using a School Opal card.

Your assistance will help ensure that Hillsbus are able to provide the appropriate level of service to all Kellyville High School students.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Please feel free to contact Hillsbus Pty Ltd, if you have any further questions regarding the issues raised above. Hillsbus Pty Ltd

Page 9: The Marella Muse - Kellyville High School...The Marella Muse Vol 16 | Ed 2 /03/19 Kellyville HS We are a vibrant and innovative learning community that is committed to delivering excellence

Recently, I heard my adult daughter rebuke a male friend for telling her that she’d lost weight.

“You just can’t say that,” remarked my daughter.

Realising his mistake this young man said, “So what should say instead?”

“Tell me I look healthy.”

“Hey, you look really healthy!”

“That’s better,” remarked my daughter, who’s not backward in coming forwards.

This young man’s scripting was askew. He knew that a male complimenting a female on losing weight maybe no compliment at all, however he didn’t know what else to say. My daughter gave him a new script that he can use in similar situations in the future.

This scenario is relevant to parenting. Parents should always looking for opportunities to give their kids the social scripts to express themselves in different situations.

Benefits of providing kids with social scripts

Social scripting wins the parenting trifecta. Giving kids the words to use helps them stay safe; become social and importantly, promotes their independence. Your job as a parent is to wean kids off you. Social scripting is a big part of this process.

So if keeping kids safe, while socialising and developing their independence is important then look for ways to give kids the right words to use. Here are some ideas to get you started.

1. Asking a teacher for help or assistance

Kids often coerces parents to do their bidding with teachers, coaches, siblings and other adults. It’s easy to pick up the phone and arrange to meet a teacher or go into your child’s room and ask for something on behalf of your child. Take a different approach. “Choose a time when your teacher is free, and then ask her if you can sit at the front of the classroom. You could say….”

2. Entering a game at school

Many kids struggle to enter into a game or activity at school, so they sit on the sidelines and miss out. Consider

insightsPOSITIVE PARENTING

coaching a child about how he or she may approach a situation. Suggest that he or she looks for someone they know, and wait for a lull in the game before asking. Social scripting involves timing, not just the words to use.

3. Telling a sibling to stop annoying them

“Jessica, please stop flicking the ruler while I’m watching TV. I find it annoying.” This may work. If not, this child could try, “Jessica, could you flick your rule elsewhere.” It may work. It may not. But it’s infinitely better than yelling, “Jessica, DDDOOOONNNN’TTTT!!!!”

4. Saying No to a friend without losing face

Research shows that many teenagers struggle with peer pressure because they don’t know how to say NO in a way that maintains their status. One strategy is to use an excuse rather than say give an outright NO. “I don’t want to drink tonight because I’ve got football training in the morning.”

5. Expressing their emotions

Both genders can struggle to express their feelings, particularly if they haven’t been taught the words to use at home. Recently, I saw a mother prompt her three year old when he was clearly annoyed.

“Are you frustrated Maxie?”

“Yes, I fusttated!!”

“Would you like a hug?

“Yessss!”

You’re never too young or too old to be hugged. Just as you’re never too young or too old to receive a social script from a well-meaning parent or friend.
