Students Participate in Duke of Ed

After all the rain in March the weather was good to us over the weekend. The Glow Worm Tunnel road was in very poor condition and the drive in was quite an adventure in itself. This was a first camp for 8 new Bronze level students. A total fire ban in the Mountains over summer had finished so there was lots of fire wood around for a students’ fire and a teachers’ fire. The evening was warm but we still went to bed at 9 o’clock (hikers midnight) being quite tired from the 8km hike. Most of us slept really well with only a few possums heard outside during the night.

The teachers were all so impressed with the students’ navigation skills. Everyone one worked well together. It’s Adventure Journeys like these that show us how we treat each other matters, the language we use, the words we say, our actions and decisions, all bring congruence to those around us. The long-term outcome is building a resilient and grateful group of students that works for the greater good of others.

Sunday morning was pleasant 7°C, but we still had a nice camp fire for breakfast. Then it was exploring up Split Rock and climbing to the top of a pagoda for beautiful views of the valley. Unfortunately we had to get back to the buses and we still had a 7km uphill hike ahead of us. Next time we’ll make sure we explore the canyon of Nayook Creek.

On these journeys we develop emotional learning skills by building self-awareness: knowing your strengths and limitations, building confidence and optimism; self-management: motivation to set and achieve goals; social-awareness: empathising with others and inclusion for a common purpose; positive relationships: clear communication, listening, cooperation and offering help where needed; responsible decision making: by making constructive choices about behaviour and social interactions.

On this journey, we were very grateful to have our Gold Duke of Edinburgh leaders, Amelia, Savannah and Georgia join us by taking on leadership roles to support others just like themselves. Helping others gives meaning and the capacity to give back and be a part of others’ lives in a supportive way.

A KHS student, Jasmine, summed up the journey very well: My friends and I all had so much fun on the duke of Ed camp! It was a great time to make new friends and get to know each other, while still learning new skills. I think Duke of Ed is something everyone should try! Mr I. Thomas TAS Faculty

Relay For Life

Well done Kellyville!

The SEC is proud to announce, that together we have raised a massive $5400 towards the Hills Relay for life, supporting the Cancer Council.

The SEC hosted our own Kellyville relay for life, where we all supported by wearing mufti. We also walked around the oval to reflect the motto of Relay for life in that Cancer does not stop, nor will we. Through the kind donations of SEC / House Council members and staff, we ran a bake sale to add to our tally. The dedication and commitment by the whole school community was amazing.

This was further evident when we represented the school at the Hills Relay for life at Castle Hill Showground. We had over 60 representatives throughout the day, and had people representing all 24 hours.

In total, we walked 202 laps. The atmosphere was so supportive with all of the other community groups. There were school groups, families who had lost a loved one, survivors and carers all represented. A huge thankyou to all those came, especially those doing the overnight shift.

Thank you to all the parents and community members that supported our team tally and made donations. A massive thankyou to Mrs Maloney’s mum who knitted beanies in the school colours to help keep us warm.

For our second year, this was a huge effort. Let us see what we can do next year Kellyville.

Anusha H in Year 7 plays the flute.

Q: What inspired you to play the flute?

I really liked the sound of the flute and when I could blow into the flute without ever having

played it before, I signed up for it!

Q: Any special music achievements?

Last year the senior band, that I was a part of in primary school, performed in the state championships and came first in our division.

Q: What do you enjoy most about your music making?

I love playing the melodies in music (because that’s what flutes are for) and just playing along even if I make a mistake.

Q: Do you have any words of advice for future musicians coming in to high school?

Don’t stop playing your instrument because playing an instrument in the band is the best experience you’ll have! Flute is the BEST instrument EVER!

If you’re the parent of an anxious child you’re most certainly not alone. The number of children experiencing an anxiety disorder is currently estimated at 117 million worldwide. Here in Australia, there’s an average of 2 anxious kids in every classroom; and they’re the ones with a diagnosis. Many more anxious kids are yet to have their anxiety identified and understood.

As much as we’d like to, we can’t rid our kids of their anxiety, but we can help them to manage it in ways that enable them move it from centre stage and get on with living a vibrant, rich and meaningful life.

Here are 6 tips to support you to parent your anxious child:

1. Explain anxietyAnxious kids can struggle to explain how they feel and can worry that no-one will understand what they’re going through. That’s why explaining anxiety is an important step in supporting an anxious child. The knowledge that anxiety is well understood, that other kids experience it and that it’s manageable brings them immediate relief.

Teach your anxious child that the part of their brain that protects them from danger is always on high alert. Called the amygdala, it’s meant to protect them from genuine danger but for anxious kids, it can be almost constantly activated.

Explain that when they feel anxious, their amygdala sends signals to their body to fight or flee from the threat, whether it’s real or imagined.

Next, talk about the body changes such as increased heart rate, rapid breathing and an upset stomach that power them up to fight or flee. They might even feel dizzy, hot, sweaty and panicked. Anxiety effects thinking and behaviour too.

2. Respond with empathyIn the midst of an anxious moment it’s natural to want to reassure anxious kids they’ve got nothing to worry about. Reassurance works in the short term but it soon wears off and they come back for more, which becomes an unhelpful pattern.

Instead, respond with empathy and validation. Use ahhh statements such as:

“Ahhh, I see you’re feeling really anxious right now, I know how hard this is for you”

6 tips for parenting anxious kidsby Dr Jodi Richardson

insightsEMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

Page 11: The Marella Muse - Kellyville High School...The Inner Wheel Club of Baulkham Hills’ Musical Evening for Stewart House June 19th, 2019 at 7.00 pm In the Model Farms High School hall,

“Ahhh, I know you’re feeling really worried right now, it’s not much fun feeling like that is it?”

Anxious kids need to know you understand what they’re going through.

3. Show the amygdala they’re safeOnce the amygdala senses danger, the cascade of events that follow can’t be stopped. The body and brain will respond as if the danger is immediate. The best way to help an anxious child calm their anxious brain is to teach them to show their amygdala they’re safe. Deep and intentional breathing helps an anxious child to calm their amygdala and will begin to reduce their anxious symptoms. Practise intentional breathing regularly between anxious times before applying this technique in the midst of an anxious moment.

4. Practise mindfulness -the antidote to worryingAnxiety is distress now about a possible future event, which is why worrying is common for anxious kids. When an anxious child’s mind fast-forwards to an upcoming event or expectation, their amygdala can respond as if the ‘threat’ to their safety is immediate. The antidote to worrying is mindfulness. Put simply, mindfulness is paying attention to what’s happening in the present moment. It may take time to learn, but is a powerful anxiety management strategy once it’s mastered.

5. Practice defusing sticky thoughtsAnxious thoughts can get stuck, refusing to budge no matter how much attention is payed to them. Defusion is a strategy that helps anxious kids look at their thoughts rather than from them.

Imagine your anxious child is worried about an upcoming test. They’re thinking “I’m going to fail the test”. The thought makes them feel awful. Defusion helps kids (all of us) to look at their thoughts by reminding them that the words in their heads are indeed just words, not reality.

Your anxious child can defuse his unhelpful thoughts by putting a statement in front of the thought such as: “I notice I’m having the thought that I’m going to fail the test.” Alternatively, he can say the thought in a character voice like Darth Vader or Peppa Pig, or sing it to the tune of happy birthday or a nursery rhyme. Defusion puts distance between anxious kids and their thoughts and is a wonderful skill to learn.

6. Get the fundamentals rightAmple sleep, good nutrition and exercise are essential for anxious kids. Support your child to adhere to their optimal bedtime so they wake naturally around the time of their alarm, reduce their sugar intake to support their gut health and to exercise regularly for optimal mental health.

These are some of the many strategies that you can share with your child to support them to recognise and manage their anxiety so they can live life in full colour.

Recent events and current statistics highlight that as a nation we have a serious problem when it comes to domestic violence. While there’s no easy solution, together, we can do our part to stop violence against women. If you’re a parent or guardian, you can play an important role. Disrespect towards girls can begin in childhood, and we can break the cycle when we teach our children to be respectful and caring right from the start.

As parents, we have three main jobs:

First, to love our children and build a strong lifetime bond

Second, to keep them safe from harm until they can do that for themselves

Third, to teach them all the skills they need to thrive in life and to make a positive difference in the world

Life skills approach to raising childrenSo what life skills do children need to learn when it comes to the issue of preventing violence against girls and women? As parents, we can talk with our kids about:

Behaving respectfully towards others

Communicating their needs using words and without the need to hit, snatch or shout

Managing their emotions and their behaviours so as not to ‘fly off the handle’

Start the conversation about respect earlyStart by responding to your child calmly when they are disrespectful to others. The following three-step communication approach can be used from early childhood through to teen years. Let’s put it into practice.

If a boy is making fun of his sister or a female friend:

1. STOP: Respond calmly rather than react asking him to stop the teasing.

2. EMPATHISE: Invite your son to see the behaviour through the eyes of his sister. ‘How do you think your sister/friend feels right now?’

insightsPOSITIVE PARENTING

Page 13: The Marella Muse - Kellyville High School...The Inner Wheel Club of Baulkham Hills’ Musical Evening for Stewart House June 19th, 2019 at 7.00 pm In the Model Farms High School hall,

3. EDUCATE: Provide options such as ignoring his sister or friend if she’s annoying him or providing an appropriate social script he can use to communicate his thoughts such as, “I find it annoying when you don’t share the computer”

It’s a marathon, not a sprintWhen it comes to gaining academic knowledge and learning skills, parents know it takes years of consistent effort from childhood through to adolescence. In the same way, parents can take a long-term approach to teaching life skills beginning right from toddler to teen.

Parents lead the wayParents are powerful teachers and role models for the next generation. We can teach our children how to be respectful and kind to each other. By stopping disrespect and violence at the start we can play a crucial role in putting an end to violence against girls and women.

Resources you can useThe Stop it at the Start campaign provides parents, family members and others with information and practical resources to self-reflect, and talk to boys and girls aged 10-17 about being respectful and caring. You can find videos, guides and other resources to help you have conversations with your children at www.respect.gov.au/resources/talking-about-respect.

There is so much we can do in families to develop healthy attitudes toward women. Through modelling and teaching we can change entrenched attitudes and behaviours that will put an end to the cycle of violence against women.

Page 14: The Marella Muse - Kellyville High School...The Inner Wheel Club of Baulkham Hills’ Musical Evening for Stewart House June 19th, 2019 at 7.00 pm In the Model Farms High School hall,

Surveys have consistently shown that children have been exposed to rising amounts of screen time in recent years, as well as parents struggling to manage the moods and time demands of children and young people.

As kids spend increasing amounts of time tethered to a digital device, it makes sense that the time they are online, is time well spent. As parents we’re often concerned about the connections children and young people are making and the subsequent impact on their wellbeing. We’re often concerned about the content they’re consuming, and how helpful, relevant and safe it is for them. Rightfully, there’s concern that the time spent online,  scrolling, searching and swiping, may well be time better spent on other pursuits.

Obviously, these digital devices won’t be going anywhere fast. So, we need to look at how we remain in control of our screen use, and ensure the time we’re investing online is adding something helpful, positive and meaningful to our lives.

Here are a few tips to help you be more intentional with your scrolling. Being mindful of how time spent on devices, is certainly not just reserved for young people.

Encourage creation not just consumptionHere’s a simple question. Are you more of a consumer or creator when you’re online? When you spend your online time in creative mode such as making things, creating own videos, editing photos, writing blogs, coding a video game or composing a song you are getting something tangible in return for the time spent on a screen. You are achieving and creating something, rather than simply consuming the content made by others, which is generally far more satisfying as a user.

Look at who you are following Consider the real purpose of the people on your feeds.  Are you following celebrities you can never relate to, companies you would never buy from, or people who bring you down rather than teach or inspire you? Ideally, you’ll follow people and companies that you can connect with and add positively to your life.

So what about your child? If they have a passion for something, help them find suitable people to follow. For instance, if they love space, search for NASA and related accounts. If they love photography, help them find great photographers sharing their work online. When they’re following people that teach, inspire and ignite their passions, they’re less likely to spend valuable time with energy zappers.

Creating healthy digital habits in kidsby Martine Oglethorpe

insightsTECHNOLOGY AND PARENTING

Page 15: The Marella Muse - Kellyville High School...The Inner Wheel Club of Baulkham Hills’ Musical Evening for Stewart House June 19th, 2019 at 7.00 pm In the Model Farms High School hall,

Do a digital declutterWe all have so many apps on our devices and many are just clutter that we used once and no longer visit or don’t add anything constructive to our day. Maybe you could try deleting all the apps on your phone and only put those back that you need to make your day easier, or that offer you something positive. This forces us to look at the real benefits, or not, of the apps and thus the time we are spending online. Could there be better games for your kids to play? Are there better videos for them to watch than the ones that the YouTube algorithm believes they want to see?

Role model good practisesMost kids learn much more from what they see and experience, rather than from what they are told. As a parent be sure to be intentional with your screentime.  Do you:

Follow people that support you, challenge you in helpful ways or inspire and lift you up?

Interact in positive ways?

Give people your attention rather than scroll whilst others are talking to you?

Put your digital devices away in order to fit all the other important things into your day?

Setting your kids up with good online habits will help make these practises the norm. If you don’t want your children falling prey to the harmful and unhelpful experiences online, you need to be sure that they are focusing on positive and helpful screentime pursuits.

Be intentional with your scrolling, and you’ll ensure you’re getting a much greater return on your online investment.
