Relieving Principal’s Address

We have had a great start to the Managed Return to School process. The very high attendance and engagement rates

have given teachers a real boost in confidence about the next few weeks. Of first importance has been the issue of safety

and hygiene. What I have witnessed, is a very mature approach to this issue by our students and great guidance for

them from staff. This is contributing greatly to a feeling of being safe and comfortable at school for all.

This has also encouraged us to review our planning for the next phases. We have a few different scenarios in mind de-

pending on what fresh announcements are made, quite possibly with short notice with significant changes. We will con-

tinue to publish our latest plans each Thursday so please keep an eye out for these notifications.

Year 11 and 12 students have also received a revised assessment outline which has been constructed to cater for changes

from NESA, to acknowledge the great work that students have already completed but to also reduce the pressure that

students may be feeling. We hope that this gives students and families some clarity on this issue but please contact the

school if you have any questions.

The school has been a bit noisier this week! But it has been good noise.

We are looking forward to this increasing as we advance into the term.

Thanks for your support, it is truly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Mr Mark Burnard

Deputy Principal’s Report

Welcome back to our Stage 6 students!

Year 12 have finally received their jerseys. It’s lovely to see that these rites of passage can continue despite these uncer-

tain times.

We urge our students to keep the focus, and continue to work hard as their studies continue throughout the year.

The HSC timetable is expected to be released today (15 May, 2020). Ensure that you keep up to date with the NESA

website regularly to receive any updates.

Make sure that you have also read over the Stage 6 Assessment Advice that was released to parents/caregivers yester-

day (14 May, 2020). These will be handed out as hard copies to students whilst maintaining social-distancing proce-

dures.

Update from the Office

As Week 3 of Term 2 comes to a close, we are overjoyed to have our students and fellow staff return to us.

Although the last few weeks have been quite the adjustment, we—as a team—have overcome these changes, as our ad-

ministration staff have continuously upheld school values; to strive for collective efficacy whether they are working on-

site or at home. I would like to congratulate the entirety of our SASS team for their efforts during this unprecedented

time.

We have introduced new safety measures within the front office to ensure the protection of our students, staff and outer

community. These measures include:

• The installation of safety shields on both the parent and student counters;

• The implementation of procedures that allow only 2 people at the counter at a time;

• The placement of hand sanitiser at each counter for students and parents to use after contact with staff; and

• The introduction of PPT gear for our office staff when handling sick students—these include department-

supplied capes, protective goggles, and gloves. The sick bay is also routinely cleaned and sanitised after each use.

These measures have proved to be successful, and have limited student and staff contact with potential risk factors. We

encourage the community to continue to interact with the office as normal.

We are still able to receive POP and cash payments. Further measures have been put in place for cash handling, as well.

To end, I would also like to extend my congratulations to Miss Samantha Henry (SASS) who works in our front office.

Samantha has recently graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from Western Sydney University. Due to Covid-19, she

was unable to attend her own graduation ceremony. Today, the SASS team organised a mock graduation for Samantha

to celebrate her achievements.

Updated safety measures have similarly been implemented throughout the whole school as students and staff make

their return. Our contracted cleaners are also completing an extra 7 hours’ contracted cleaning to accommodate the re-

turn of our students.

These measures include:

• Safe ‘social distancing’ signs have been placed throughout the classrooms and school areas;

• Updated signs on outer gates have been placed, outlining the phased return-to-school status;

• Hand sanitisers, paper towels and hand wipes have been placed in all classrooms and staffrooms; and

• Canteen lunch breaks have been split into two time slots to allow for smaller groups to access the canteen.

From the Welfare Team—Week 3

Welcome back to some face to face learning. It has been wonderful seeing our beloved students this week. Just a re-

minder that coming back to school may be a very challenging time for some of our students, so keep an eye out for any-

thing out of ordinary and reach out to us for support where you need it. Linked below, you will also find a very exten-

sive list of DOE endorsed Wellbeing support services that you can access if required.

School Photos

We were expecting our school photos to arrive this term, however as a result of the widespread impact of COVID-19

advanced life photography have had to pause the operation of their photographic branches and customer service until

schools resume in a more full time capacity. As such the arrival of school photos have been postponed. Student ID cards

have arrived and have been issued, any student who has not received their ID card can come to the student counter and

collect their card on their next allocated school day.

Tell Them From Me Survey

This year Kellyville High School is again participating in the Tell Them From

Me survey. Tell Them From Me is a suite of surveys for measuring student

engagement and wellbeing. The surveys are used to capture student, parent

and teacher voices, providing reliable evidence for schools to use in identify-

ing strengths and areas for improvement.

The reports provide information that can help schools in their annual plan-

ning and reporting activities, by helping to identify emerging issues and plan

for improvement. The information provided to the school from these surveys is very valuable in helping us identify

ways to build on and improve our school community to benefit of all stakeholders

As a result of the impact of COVID-19 we are requesting that students complete this survey at home during their allo-

cated wellbeing lesson. The survey takes approximately 15 minutes to complete, is anonymous and does not require

parent assistance. If you do not wish for your child to partake in this survey please return the non-consent form to the

school on your child’s next rostered day.

Your child would have come home with a letter containing a unique username and password, they will need this infor-

mation to complete the survey. Please disregard the dates on the letter, the survey window has been extended to the

29th of May. If your child did not attend on their allocated day, their unique username and password has been posted

home.

More information about the survey is available here:

http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au

To complete the survey your child needs to use this address:

The Last Pure

Elodi Marshall assumed the rest of her life was going to be studying and graduating with her best friend Ozzie. However, after

meeting a strange boy that moved to town with his family, she finds herself wrapped up in a situation. Elodi is in trouble and some-

one is after her and her power. With Pure blood flowing through her system, she isn't safe, not even with her best friend.

On the 14th of April I had the delight of finishing writing a 370 page novel. On April 15th I had the delight of having a

printed out version of the novel. On the 20th of April I was emailed by Amazon KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) that my

second novel had finally been published on their website.

I am finally excited to announce the story of Elodi Marshall, her quirky best friend, Ozzie Reed and her beloved boy-

friend, Paris Grey. Elodi is thrown into a new discovery that she is a supernatural creature believed to be known as a

Pure, (werewolf, vampire and witch) and now it is her responsibility to be the protector of the two worlds, Humans and

Supernaturals.

I want to say thank you to all my English teachers I had the pleasure of being taught by since starting at Kellyville High

School in 2016. Thank you to the teachers who were there to guide me, and support me through the ups and downs of

high school. Thank you to my Year Advisor, Ms Shakas and (assistant Year Advisor) Miss Georgey.

Thank you to friends and family, as well as peers and classmates for giving me support while going through the process

of writing and self publishing. And a quick thanks to Elodi, Ozzie and Paris for letting me tell your story.

Stay tuned for the next couple books in the series, Elodi’s story isn’t over yet!

Film and Screen Writing Course

Due to the close association the Kellyville High School Media Team now has with the Australian Film Television and

Radio School (AFTRS), I was recently offered a place in a prestigious and sought after course. The course is fully funded

by AFTRS and covers the art of writing and shooting films.

The course involves working with an experienced screen writer to learn the art of screenwriting through writing a short

film – from initial conception through to the development of my story (which was about returning to school after lock-

down).

It is an intensive and rewarding course which has sparked my interest in creative writing and writing for the screen. I

am always provided with valuable feedback from my tutor, Thomas Wilson-White. Thomas has written and filmed sev-

eral well-known films, Fish River and The Greenhouse.

Topic areas include;

Developing Engaging Characters - Getting the basics of structure and plot, and how to write visually, Compelling story-

lines- Learning about the different types of films, and where to find ideas and inspiration and Screenplay layout - “What

is story?” and how does it work in short form?

I am also learning how to lay out my screenplay according to industry standards using Celtx.

The film produced recently by the Media Team (Barrangal Skin) has been selected as a finalist in a London Film Festival.

The Dept. of Education will soon share the film on a newly developed online Hub called Student Voices
