o 1. Manifest Destiny was a phrase which invoked the idea of divine sanction for the territorial expansion, going west, of the United States created by John O’Sullivan.
The Manifest Destinyo 2. They believed the open field to the
West brought opportunity and potential wealth.
o 3. By moving west, from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean, they could show their unique form of government and the freedom it represented.
The Manifest Destinyo When the term “Manifest Destiny” started to
appear all over town and people were extremely excited to finally go west and see beyond of what they knew. The term showed up everywhere.

This painting called “Manifest Destiny” was painted in1872 by a man named John Gast.
The Manifest Destinyo 4. This land was not empty. It was owned
to the American Indians. They disagreed to the Manifest Destiny. They disagreed to John Quincy Adam’s words, “The whole continent of North America appears to be destined by divine providence to be peopled by one nation, speaking one language, professing one general system of religious and political principals…”
Manifest Destinyo The Manifest Destiny was not just a
political concept, millions of ordinary Americans believed that their best opportunities lay in the West.
