John Maland High School It’s hard to believe that it is March and six months of school have already gone by. This month, we will see our Basketball and Hockey teams challenge for Zone and Provincial Championships and we wish them all the best. As well, our bands represent our school at Music Fesvals, and we know they will once again make us proud and we support them. As we move through April to June, there will be many other opportunies to show pride in our school through various athlec teams, such as badminton, rugby, and track, as well as year-end Drama and Band performances that showcase our students and their talents. Finally, and most importantly, we want to see our students push themselves to do their absolute best in their courses and exams. It is never too early to begin preparing for final exams, especially for our grade 12’s who are beginning to seriously think about Graduaon! Grade 12 students - please begin to prepare right now to ensure that you are eligible for Graduaon. Please take me to ensure you have both enough credits, as well as the right credits to graduate. Also, check to make sure all school, team and library fees are paid in full to be sure that there are no surprises when the graduaon list is posted in May. Please take this responsibility seriously, so that all of those who have helped you through this educaonal journey can celebrate this important day with you. Finally, we will be hosng our annual Open House on Wednesday, March 15th, where Grade 9 students from the area junior high schools, along with their parents, are invited to preview our awesome school. Come and take part in a brief presentaon in the gym, followed by guided tours throughout the facility. We welcome the opportunity to show off all that JMHS has to offer! The JMHS Senior girls have had some ups and downs this season so

far ,but as they near the end of the season the girls are exactly where they want to be. Having

placed 1st in 2 tournaments, 2nd in a tournament and 3rd in another tournament over the

season, have been some great confident boosters. However the losses they've had this season

have taught them more than any of the wins ever could. They have grown as a team and bond-

ed together to create a family on and off the court. Coming off their last tournament with a win

at M.E Lazert March 9-11th they have confidence going into zones held in Edson on March

10/11th. This year, the top 4 teams are very close and it could be any of them coming home

with the Gold medal and heading to 3A Provincials. With JMHS having a core group of 5

grade 12s looking to ending their high school career playing their best basketball, the team is

excited about the possibility that it could be them.

The JMHS Junior girls have had a strong season, taking home a trophy at every tournament

they entered. At RF Staples JV tournament they came home with a first place finish. Next up,

it was off to Bentley to participate in a SR tournament where they came home with third place.

Their most recent tournament was in Mayerthorpe which again was a SR tournament and

they came home with the consolation final. The girls have really bonded together and love to

outwork their opponents. While they many lack the height you would expect from a basketball

team they make up for with their quickness. The team is excited to be hosting JV zones at

JMHS on March. 3rd and 4th and would love to

see the stands filled with navy and gold to sup-

port the Wildcats as they go for gold on home

court.

The John Maland boys basketball team has been playing Wildcat basketball like we're use to seeing. Led by their captains, Elias James and Ernie Knight, the team has an 18-6 winning record. They started the season capturing three straight Gold medals, including two Breton tournaments, and upsetting the Queen Eliza-beth tournament; beating Strathmore, East Glen and Bellerose to take home Gold. The team has also won a Silver in their most recent Morinville tournament. With zones coming closer and closer, this team is looking brighter and hungry. With sev-eral players improving, and everything slowly but surely coming together, this team is progressing. The team all has one collective goal... winning a championship!
