The LaRue County High School Hawks Boys Basketball team concluded the year with their annual awards banquet. The Hawks finished the season with an impressive 23-8 record. They defeated Caverna and Green County in the 18th District Tournament to claim their fourth consecutive district title. The Hawks have amassed a 36-4 record against their district opponents the past five years. The Hawks made their sixth consecutive appearance to the 5th region tournament. They defeated Taylor Co. 73-53 in the opening round and lost in over- time 74-80 to eventual champion John Hardin. “I am really proud of how much progress this team made over the year,” said Head Coach Paul Childress. “The players worked extremely hard in the off season and during the season as well. This was a fun bunch to coach.” The banquet included a meal in the LCHS cafe and awards ceremony in the LCHS auditorium. Players were recognized for their accomplish- ments: Kyle Sheeran – Best Free Throw Percentage, Best 3- Point Percentage, Offensive Award, Co- MVP, Senior Award Kyle Meredith - Defense Award, Senior Award Jonathan Firquin – Corky Cox Award, Senior Award, 6th Man Award Kelton Ford – Most Steals, Most Assists, Offense Award, Co-MVP Gabe Shirley – 6th Man Award Jackson Venegas, Most Improved Award Tyler Howell – Most Rebounds, Most Charges Taken, Most Improved Award Kody Key – Best Field Goal Percentage, Most Improved The following players received varsity letters or letters of participa- tion: Dustin Coulter, Kyle Devary, Dalton Lawson, Micah Wiseman, Daulton Uhl, Caleb Sheffer, Turner Cottrell, Robert Thompson, Chi-Ho Lam, Mason Harman and managers Cedrick King and Robert Benjamin. “The banquet is a time where these fine young men are honored for all the sweat, hard work and time that they put into a season,” said Childress. “It was a great year and I know that the parents, fans and supporters of LaRue County Basketball really enjoyed watching this team play. They played as a unit and competed every game. I thought we peaked at the end of the season and gave ourselves a great chance in the regional tourney. We were shooting the ball well and everyone knew their roles and was giving us all they had. LaRue fell 2-0 in the April 3 game. LaRue County wasted an 11- strikeout night by sophomore Brigitte Skaggs, who allowed six hits, two walks and hit one batter in 8 2/3 innings. Sophomore Peyton Gardner went 2-for-4 while senior Brittany Enlow, Brigitte Skaggs and junior Kayla Skaggs each had one hit. Sophomore Courtney Johnson and eighth-grader Mallory Skaggs both stole a base. Florida Beach Bash The 13th-ranked North Laurel Lady Jaguars defeated LaRue’s Lady Hawks 1-0 on Sunday dur- ing the opening day of the annual Florida Beach Bash in Fort Walton. No. 6 Louisville Assumption was originally supposed to play LaRue County, but Assumption played Saturday evening in the prestigious 50-team Bob Jones Classic in Huntsville, Ala., and didn’t make it to the beach in time to play the Lady Hawks. Brigitte Skaggs went 2-for-3 with a double for LaRue County, while freshman Tristan Cruise singled and stole a base. Four players – Brittany Enlow, Kayla Skaggs, Gardner and eighth- grader Delany Eastridge – each had one hit. LaRue County had seven hits and walked once, but left 10 run- ners on base. The Lady Hawks had the bases loaded with one out in the second and third innings. The Lady Hawks have been outscored 36-2 over 27 innings during their five-game losing streak. “But we’re playing a lot better than we were, so I’m happy about that,” said second-year LaRue County coach Aaron Howell. “We’re just not getting that key hit when we need it. We’re going to have to start manufacturing runs somehow.” Kayla Skaggs struck out one and walked one while scattering six hits – all singles. North Laurel (10-2) had scored at least three runs in each of its previous 11 games. The Eagles scored twice in the second inning and held the Hawks scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning. Stephen Carpenter singled and advanced to second on a shortstop error. He stole third and scored on a catcher’s error. Sheeran walked and senior Kyle Meredith reached base on an error. Both runners advanced on the throw. Johnson grounded out bringing in Sheeran.
