The Gospel According to Greg

Greg Taylor Greg Taylor Greg Taylor Greg Taylor [email protected] Sunday was Sanctity of Human Life Sunday, and today (the 22nd) marks the 40th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade, the Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion in the USA. Over the past 40 years, over 55 million legal abortions have been reported in our country. On Thursday, my good friend and fellow minister Jeff Mayfield from Taylorville, IL shared a captivating story that reinforces the truth I cannot be reminded of enough: Every. Life. Matters. This account is the testimony of Professor Pete Tigchelaar of Calvin College, and was reported first in the Calvin News, on December 18, 2003.

Tigchelaar tells that he had regularly used a plastic-encased, 3-month-old fetus in his human

biology classes. In 2002, a visit from a young woman showed him that the fetus was more than

simply a good educational tool.

The young woman told Tigchelaar that a

generation earlier her mother had been a student in one of Tigchelaar’s biology classes. Unknown to Tigchelaar, this student was three months

pregnant on a day he had shown the class the fetus with its tiny fingers, facial features, eyes,

outline of a liver and other human features.

“She had already visited a pregnancy center,”

Tigchelaar recalls the young woman telling him, and was told about the “product of conception” and “contents of the uterus” that she had within

her. She was advised to have an abortion and had one scheduled for the following morning.’

But after Tigchelaar’s class she realized she had more within her than a ‘product of conception.’

She canceled her scheduled abortion, continued with her pregnancy and eventually delivered a

healthy baby girl.

“I am that girl,” the student then informed a

stunned Tigchelaar. “Thanks for saving my life.”

Tigchelaar, at the time, was amazed, speechless.

He remembers in a halting voice telling the girl simply that she was beautiful. “Even now,” he

says, “I can barely tell the story without breaking up.” Yet tell it he does. The celebration of “Sanctity of Human Life Sunday” should remind

each of us, as Pete Tigchelaar will tell you, that every life from conception through senior citizen,

is precious. Every. Life. Matters.

Blessings, Greg

God knows what we need before we ask. If we will simply make our requests known to Him, He will bring them to pass in His own good timing. Worry will not help our cause at all. It will, in fact, hinder our progress. It is permissible to want things, but we should only seek God, because without Him nothing else has any value. “Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your request be made known unto God.” Philippians 4:6 (Darby Translation) We’re looking forward to the 5th of February when Chrissy and Kenny come to give us memories and good music from the past, with Kenny singing some Elvis songs and a little of Rick Roy returning. It sure would be nice to see Rick’s smiling face and hear him sing the Lighthouse. Our programs will be as great as we can have. “So don’t be anxious about tomorrow. God will take care of tomorrow too. Live one day at a time.” Matthew 6:34 (TLB) On Valentine’s day evening, we’ll travel to the Goodfield Barn for a night of fun and fellowship. It’s always a delight to enjoy an evening of a stage play and good food at the Barn. Starved Rock is our next trip on the 28th of March for a day of good joy and delightful food. Then on the 11th of April we’ll enjoy another day of peace and fun at the White Pine State Park. In May we’ll travel to the Celebration riverboat for a time of big bands and great music. “Love builds memories that will endure to be treasured up as hints of what shall be hereafter.” - B. Jarret When we have our thoughts and conversations on what is wrong with everyone else, we are usually being deceived about our own conduct. Therefore, Jesus commanded that we not concern ourselves with what is wrong with others when we have so much wrong with ourselves. Allow God to deal with you first, and then you will learn the spiritual way of helping your brother grow in his Christian walk. “Chance makes brothers, hearts make friends.” - Booth

Important Dates to Remember March 23 - Winter Jam Concert in Champaign April 12-14 - Believe Conference for Jr. High in

Lake of the Ozarks, MO

For me, the beginning of 2013 has not started as I would have liked. First, I contracted the flu bug that seems to have affected so many in this area and across the U.S.! I don’t usually get sick beyond having a cold through the winter months. This year, I was as sick as I can remember and was forced to miss a Sunday of leading worship! And now, I have injured my lower back, and after a weekend of hardly being able to move, stand, let alone lead worship, I am finally starting to recover and I’m getting some mobility back, thanks to the skill of Dr. Stephanie Cluver, who came to my rescue with expert chiropractic care! I want to say “thank you” to all of the people who have stepped in to lead worship in my place: Marcia Wise and Larry Roberts on my first weekend out of commission and Mark Behrends, Samuel Green and my son, Ethan Coonce who led this last weekend. I am thankful for each of these people who did a great job with short notice. Hopefully, it will be a long time before I have to call on people to fill in because I am sick or incapacitated. However, it’s great to know that there are people that I can depend on when in need. Over the past few weeks I have been reminded of how much I (all of us) take health and normal daily functions for granted. Who would have thought that tying my shoes would become impossible for me to accomplish. The simple act of moving from a sitting to standing position has gained new meaning as I recently have struggled with this routine that most of us perform many times every day! There are countless physical actions that I normally automatically do that in the past few days have become difficult if not impossible to do! Okay, there is a point to all of this besides me lamenting my physical woes. All of this has reminded me of a passage of scripture that talks about the body and it’s relationship to the church. I Corinthians 12:12-31 talks about the Body Of Christ and its many parts. I personally can relate well to 12:26 - “If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.” I definitely understand how one small part of my back has literally immobilized me over the past few days! I encourage you to read this entire section of scripture on your own. However, Paul’s point is clear: We, as the church, have many different functions, many different roles as we carry out the ministry of FCC. Each of these parts is essential and needed. I encourage you to become an active part of this wonderful body called the Church! No matter your role, whether big or small, we need all of you so that we can function at full capacity! I’m looking forward to being with you all again this Sunday!
