MAIN INFORMATION

• Size

• Length: 43.5 ft (13.2 m)

• Weight: 24,500 lb (11,110 kg)

• Maximum Diameter: 14 ft (4.2 m)

o Hubble´s name:

• Named after Erwin Hubble (1889—1953)

• confirmed an "expanding" universe

=> Provided the foundation for the Big Bang theory.o Speed:

• 28000 km/h

• => 97 min to complete one orbit

HISTORY

Who had the idea to built a space telescope?• It was Lyman Spitzer (1914-1997)

• In 1946 Spitzer proposed the development of a large, space-based telescope

Start of the telescope• on 24th April, 1990

• Difficulties at the beginning

• Pictures were blurry

Þ because Hubble's primary mirror had a flaw called "spherical aberration”

• On December 2, 1993 astronauts corrected the mistake

HISTORY

End of the telescop• It was planned for the year 2010

• But maintance works was rescheduled

=> Now end of the telescope probably in 2014

• Successor of the Hubble space telescope : James Webb Space Telescope

instruments in the hubble space telescopeFor example:

Wide field camera 3• Installed 2009 • Made for natural light

Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph• acts somewhat like a prism• separating light from the cosmos into its component colors
