SARI Exhibition

To accompany the Indian Film festival, the Haags Historisch Museum (Historical Museum of The Hague) is mounting a small exhibition of Saris at the Film huis in Den Haag. Made of beautiful fabrics, the sari is the traditional dress of Indian women throughout the country. It is the most common traditional attire of Indian women. Apart from the Indian diaspora in The Netherlands, the Surinami Hindustani Community is also very fond of Saris. Members of this community, which has become an integral part of the Dutch society since their arrival in this country in the 1960s and ’70s following the independence of Suriname. Many Indian women go to India, UK or UAE to buy Saris. However, some shops in The Hague (in Paul Krugerlaan) also sell Saris. Whereas in India the standard seven-metre-long sari is everyday wear; in the Netherlands, the women among the Indian diaspora and Surinami Hindustani community wear it mainly on special occasions such as weddings, birthdays, religious and other holidays, or baptisms (muran).
