The Epiphany Star August 2017 Newsletter of Epiphany Lutheran Church Fort Wayne, Indiana Dear Epiphany Lutheran Church, Grace to you and peace from God our Father and our Lord and Savior Jesus the Christ. Amen. How many of you used to think August was the last month of the Season of Sum- mer? You still had a few more weeks of “summer vacation” before you had to start school after “Labor Day Weekend.” The temptures were still high which allowed you to be able to stay outdoors and play. The sun didn’t set until late in the evening. “Back to School” sales didn’t even start until the last week of August. Registration for school took place the first week of classes when you had to fill out those little “green cards” that barely had space to write your full name on the line. Then the school secretary had to be able to read your writing too. Today early registration for FWCS was the last of July. Classes start soon for students… even college students are moving back early! How many of us are ready for this kind of transition to happen? Time moves by fast enough without having to speed things up! I sometimes think I am in one of those “space/time continuums” that is moving me at warp speed! When did all of this happen? I am not that old am? With everything moving at such a fast pace, have you taken time to take care of your heart and soul? I know college students have to have a medical physically before they attend school these days with a complete record of the immunization rec- ords. When was the last time you examined your heart and soul for a healthy walk with God? We are so concerned about schedules and the physical part of our lives that we forget the part I think is vital to our whole lives. Refresh yourself in the Sac- raments of Holy Baptism and Holy Communion. Hear God’s Word and allow it to re- new your heart and soul to meet the challenges of everyday life. Bask in the for- giveness that comes from receiving God’s Grace sufficient for your life. When you have your priorities in the correct order, and set about to follow those priorities God is able to accomplish great things in your life. Are you walking

gust…that will have you following God’s will for you and find yourselves

strengthened to meet all of the challenges ahead of you. God is clearing the

path you are to follow. Are you walking on that path? May your transition be

In Christ, Pastor Richard Hartman

The year 2017 marks the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation.

In 1517 Martin Luther nailed his famous ’95 Theses’ on the door of the Wittenberg chapel doors.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to travel

the paths that Martin Luther walked?

Now you can view his path through a series by Rick Steves’.

For the month of August at 9am we are going to view a documentary and discuss it.

Join us on Sunday mornings to find out a little bit

about our Lutheran heritage. See you there!

Meals on Wheels

Thank you for your continued support of this vital mission in our community.

Our congregation donated a total of $84 in the month of August, bringing our total

donations to over $8,200! Please let Dia in the office know if

you would like to be added to the list to give $7 a month to this worthy cause.

Thank you for sharing the gifts God has given to you!

We are currently raising money to replace all the glass in the windows throughout the building with a low e bronze

glass with the exception of the sanctuary windows.

The current windows have defective glass and are out of warranty. The window frames are ok and only the glass needs to be replaced.

Council will have a proposal for us to vote on at the September Meeting.

We are starting to collect funds for this project in hopes that we will have the money needed by the time we start the project to complete before cold weather.

There are 22 windows to have glass replaced at an estimated cost of $7,200 with installation. Watch the poster for our progress on funding this project.

Also watch for Change $$$ for panes …..

Currently, 26 churches and 47 delegates are associated with this ministry.

An additional long term facility was added in April 2017 and others are considering joining

with L.A.I.M. chaplains to provide services to their residents.

We continue to see this mission impact the lives of unchurched residents and have noted an increased number

of baptisms performed by the chaplains. Thank you for your financial and prayer support of L.A.I.M.

Peace! Sue Johnson

Mission Moment August 2017

Many thanks to all of you who have donated items to our Lutheran World Relief kits and quilts!

We will continue to focus on these projects during the month of August in preparation for our “God’s Work Our Hands”

mission celebration on September 10. This is the day we pack up the school and health kits, assemble layettes

and will finish a quilt for a local veteran. You will get LOTS more info in your September newsletter about this.

As sales of school supplies pop up in the next few weeks,

you may receive e-mail “shopping alerts” from Dia as great sales come up.

Please take a few minutes to pick up what you can. If shopping is not your thing,

you may give money to Jane Dawkins and we’ll shop for you.

As war and civil unrest continue to make daily living a struggle for so many, we can show God’s love through providing

the necessities for a world in need.

Right now, our biggest needs are crayons, scissors, nail clippers, bath towels, and string type back packs. Please show God’s love and

care to those in need.

“Happy birthday” to those who celebrate their second birthday during the month of August! Martin Luther said, “When you wash your face, remember

your baptism.” Take time to remember and celebrate this month!

August Baptismal Birthdays

The annual “God’s work. Our hands.” day of service, a church-wide event of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America,

is coming September 10, 2017. The ELCA has designated this day as a day for all churches to reach out to our local and global communities. Epiphany does God’s work all year long,

but this day will be a time to work together to assemble Lutheran World Relief kits and do other mission projects.

Jane Dawkins will be organizing this event and would appreciate your help preparing for this day. If you have ideas for service projects or would like to

help get things ready, please see Jane as soon as possible.

Please continue to bring in items needed for our quilts and kits—more information can be found on the previous page.

This event was a big success last year; please help us reach out to others and show God’s love again this year! Thank you!
