392 Will 2019 be Woke Crisis Cancelled? 1 3

The word of the year has become a ordinary event in the calendar as dictionaries in the English-speaking world compete to announce their winner for the year. In 2018 the American-based Merriam-Webster selected ‘pancake’, the Australian Macquarie dictionary went for “me too” whilst the oldest of them all – the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) chose “Cola”. But what will the choice for 2019 be? Which words have dominated the English language as the world departs its 21st Century teens and enters our more mature twenties?

2 2

The British author of the newly released book Don’t Believe a Word: The Surprising Truth About Language, David Shariatmadari has released a list of ten words he believes the winner from the three major English language dictionaries will ignore. What is surprising in his list is that at first reading they contain words that appear to be rather exciting as well as some more unusual ones. The list is as follows; people, prorogue, femtech, sadfishing, opiod, pronoun, woke, nanoinfluencer, cancelled and crisis.

3 2

ENW will highlight two words that we feel may well be in with a chance of earning the prize of Word of the Year 2019! Prorogue seems a unlikely to become the UKs word as it has come to dominate Britain in the last few months as the term is used to define a legal suspension of parliament. Whilst in the United States - sadfishing which is a term to explain people using emotional issues to hook an audience on social media. An example of this, according to journalist Rebecca Reid, was when celebrity Kris Jenner promised to hide a confession by her daughter – only for it to be revealed as a marketing campaign for skincare.

4 3

Perhaps the word with the strongest claim to be deselected is woke – even though the word first appeared in a 1962 American publication called – Words You Might Hear in Harlem. It finally entered the OED in 2017 with a definition of ‘alert to racial or social partying”. But its prominence in 2019 is due to the African-American NPR broadcaster Sam Sanders appealing ‘to put woke to sleep’. He argued that its overuse by white American liberals has meant it has lost its true meaning. If given the choice what would ENW choose as our word of the year? Well, after careful thought, we would probably, at a pinch, go for #peoplesvote.
