MONEY MATTERS For May 2018 By: Geri Eckert, Treasurer Our EASTER SUNDAY JAZZ was a bit lean in attendance but still fun for those of us who didn't have other Easter plans. And because it was Easter Sunday, we chose not to have a Featured Band but instead asked our jammers to make music for us ...which was eagerly accepted by them... and always at a price of $000. Thank you, all you crazy jazz jammers, for making our day a very nice one and saving us

financially.*see below..... However, in the next two months we will have JAY PAULUS' SOCIETY BAND on May 6th and JAMBALAYA SWING on June 3rd. You'll definitely want to be here for them. Both are great dance bands... so put those dates on your calendar now. INCOME (April)...$631.00 Door...................................... 208. Delta Rag "scripts"................ 8. PRESIDENT’S REPORT - For May 2018 Hello my fellow music lovers. May I offer May greetings. Attendance is pitiful but we soldier on because we have in common appreciation of that wonderful gift music, which by the way salves the savage beast, and bonds us steadfastly. David and Charlie remain in our hearts and minds, to return before too long we

trust. Meanwhile we are fortunate and grateful for the volunteerism of the Stillwells who have assumed the duties of the Tygetts. Thank you ever so much. Our former sister society, STJS is no longer, and that generates in my mind another thank you to our board, especially Geri, our treasurer, assisted by Barbara and the volunteers who man the door, for assiduously managing and collecting the monies which keep us viable. Not an uncomplicated nor easy task. Would that Sacramento had the likes, to have staved off bankruptcy. As written in our latest newsletter we have signed another yearly contract with the Elks and are otherwise on track for another year. URT of the month: I have never taught but always have been fascinated by the learning process. It seems there are two distinct kinds. Deliberate/intense concentration and commitment to memory; and what I call osmotic. The latter occurs when one has the talent/aptitude to absorb the subject subconsciously through repetition. For instance I have encountered more than one fast typist who could not draw a sketch of the keyboard characters layout! They just "think" the words and the fingers fly. Same goes for sports like golf and musicians who play by "ear". Whichever the process, in my experience if one struggles the chances are slim that outstanding proficiency ever will be achieved. Most who do achieve that are good at it from the outset. But for lack of lyricistic ability I might have been a memorable song-writer. Some of my potential contenders: Indigenous Love Call; I've Got The World On a Rope; Stardirt; Are You My Baby Or What; Next Week You'll Be Sorry; There's No Use Asking Me To Dance. Help, where did I go wrong? Til next month, Your Prez. Frank

VIBES FROM THE VEEP (VICE PRESIDENT) For May, 2018

The stars were aligned for a potentially crazy April 1 session - Easter and April Fools fell on the same day. When all was said, it was just another fine musical experience for all as the Jammers provided the music for the day. The musicians were Greg Ayala, Geri Eckert, Kent Guthrie, Carl Kaiser, Mark Kramer, Frank Lindskoog, Dick Lockwood, Jim Lucas, Larry Tyrell, Chris Williams and Dick Williams.

There were a couple interesting notes about two of our jammers. While Kent has played with the SJDJS in the past, it was B. C. - before Carl (me)! Welcome back Kent! Also, how lucky were we to have Jim Lucas present that day. It was not only Easter and April Fools, but his wedding anniversary! Perhaps he will be back some day…!!! Our May session will feature the Jay Paulus Society Band. Co-leaders Jay and Barbara Paulus lead a talented group playing not only traditional jazz, but also music from the Great American Songbook and some Broadway Show Tunes. The music has a big band feel and features several vocalists including, of course, Barbara. They have been active for many years in the Sacramento area and have performed here in Stockton many times. It will be great to have them back with us at our May session. If you do not know about the San Joaquin Dixieland Jazz Society, we have a friendly group of regular attendees to our session, some wonderful guest bands and jammers. With the unfortunate demise of the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society, you may be suffering from a lack of traditional and swing jazz in your life. Come on down to Stockton the first Sunday of every month whether you dance, play an instrument or sing. In fact, if you wish, you can just watch and listen to some great jazz! We are located at the B. P. O. Elks Lodge at 8900 Thornton Road in Stockton. The music begins at 12 noon and, of course, the bar is open! Be there or be… See you at the club! Want to Contact Me? P. P. (PAST PRESIDENT) SEZ - For May 2018

Beware! The U Tube Site is a TRAP! Every time I go to the U Tube Site to find your Musical Homework assignment for the month I get stuck there. Sometimes for several hours. One nice tune leads to another and then another. Off on the right

side of the page that has the tune you looked for, some cruel person has deliberately placed a whole lot more of that artist’s tunes or tunes of a similar vein. Sheeshhhhhh! This month’s venture to the U TUBE Site was certainly no exception. I went there looking for the tune ‘ALWAYS.” I always liked that tune. I think it was my Mom and Dad’s love song. I remember hearing it from around age 5. The tune was written as a wedding present to a lady named Ellin Mc Kay. The writer even gave her the royalties from the tune. But then…….he could afford it! This tune, and so many other favorites was written for his finance by Irving Berlin. I find it very interesting to see the different styles and types of music that Irving Berlin wrote. A few of the many: Always, A Pretty Girl is Like a Melody, Alexander’s Rag Time Band, All By Myself (I Get Lonely), and I am still in the “A’s”. You want a few more? How about Blue Skies, Easter Parade, Give my Regards to Broadway, God Bless America, Puttin on the Ritz, Who, and, of course, White Christmas (plus a whole lot more!) Somebody please stop me! Here, for your homework is the tune Always, recorded by George Olson and his Music in 1926. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxg8kiI_Pvw There has been some discussion among the SJDJS Jammers about doing a Berlin Medley. Watch for that to happen in the near future. (Maybe even by May 6th?) News regarding the health of two of our finest Members (Dave Tygett and Charlie Gehlbach) continues to be very good at press time. Let’s keep those prayers and well-wishes coming.

WE MISS YOU GUYS!

That’s 30 for May of 2018 Folks! Dick Lockwood Editor The Delta Rag, Registered Sax Defender & Immediate Past President of the SJDJS

Seen at the SJDJS Scene in April 2018 By: Billie Ricker, Editor Emeritus

We are blessed with the most amazing jammers! It is wonderful to listen to their music, and sometimes it is side-splitting to hear their verbal exchanges between tunes.

And fun to watch them select the next tune to play. Someone will make a suggestion, the trumpet player will nod, somebody will gaze in the distance a couple of seconds and then ask a question. (Maybe - What key zat in?) Somebody answers, somebody raises an eyebrow, but the trumpet leans over and tells the piano player*, who doesn’t bat an eyelash, but just starts the intro, and away they go, all know the tune and the arrangement is done on the fly by the leader (or not). Usually the audience is totally unaware of all this, as they are busy catching their breath after the last fast one, or trying to remember the words to the last slow one. Jazz piano players are a breed apart. I have seen piano players so tired someone had to hold them up on the bench or they would fall off, but if the band leader yelled the name of a tune, the piano intro was right on time. It is possible that the man wasn’t just tired, a lot of people were buying him drinks. And then there is Reed man/bon vivant/Delta Rag Editor/Knows all/Rich/Dick Lockwood, who can hear the name of a tune and tell you who played trombone on the LP in what year; if you could wait 5 minutes. Maybe you would prefer to get the music news from the Music Director, Carl Kaiser, who actually knows what he’s talking about. That’s on another page. This is the “Tells all/Knows nothing” page. I always enjoy seeing Ginger and Pat here shagging. I used to enjoy dancing with the late Howard Mecum. He would say, “Let’s do a little shag here,” as a warning. I didn’t know that step was called “The Shag” until he kicked me in the shins a couple of times, and then I caught on pretty fast. I asked Cliff if he still had the shin guards he wore when I taught him the shag, but he said they wore out. He said he taught himself to play the soprano sax in self defense so I would stop teaching him to dance. I sure miss that guy. Mercy Bo Coo (as we say in France), thanks, thumbs up, kudos, and gobs of gratitude to Philinda Stillwell for doing the raffle for us. Good job! I bought a whole boatload of tickets to be sure I would win, and sure enough, as Dave Tygett always says, I won, and naturally chose something to eat. I am happy to say that Dave Tygett is doing well, tho still spending time in rehab. I go to bed a little earlier so I won’t fall asleep before I do my God Blesses. Dave is in my daily thoughts and nightly prayers. Marlena too. I have doubled up on prayers for Charlie Gehlbach. I didn’t know he was having surgery and he was safely through it when I found out. So I’m praying for rapid and happy recovery. I really miss these two guys, both with such marvelous personalities. I have marveled at them for long long time. Geri was her usual vivacious self, looking effortlessly glamorous. Said she saw Dave Tygett in rehab and he is looking good. She sang Louisiana Fairytale, and Satin Doll, both loved by the dancers. Thanks, Geri, those are loved by former dancers too. Edie Sanchez arrived early as usual and had a copy of a letter Vince Marino wrote re out first meeting on Feb. 4, 1979, where 300 people JOINED the club. Joined! Do you realize how lucky you are to have so much room on the dance floor? I notice John Mitchell doesn’t move around much on the dance floor, I bet it is because he used to dance when there wasn’t room to move without stepping on somebody. Frank Lindskoog told an entirely unlikely car trouble story. It was apparently true, but he can tell some whoppers with a straight face, so I almost had to check. Decided not to, it was such a good story. But it explained why, with 3 different officers having keys to the equipment storage, none were here on time. Tony had the down and dirty blues, and you just can’t do nothing’ about that but tough it out. I have a San Francisco Feet Warmer’s CD with, “Solitude” on it that I play over and over and cry, but that probably wouldn’t work for Tony. If you see Tony coming in next month carrying a big stick, come tell me quick so I can hide. He will want to beat me with a stick for writing about him.

Raffle Ramble For April 2018 Philinda and Bob Stillwell

This month there were a total of 16 prizes and lots of happy winners. Reva Williams took home a coffee mug and fruit jellies candy. A bottle of red wine and some cookies looked appealing to Ginger Devaney. Jennifer Rapp chose a cute white purse donated by Geri, and a bottle of Secco Grapefruit Pompelini, a

bubbly blend of white wine and grapefruit juice, according to my source on Google. The decorative bird cage and a package of fruit jellies went home with Geri Eckert. Larry Tyrell wanted the Easter jelly beans. A pair of men's slippers was chosen by Kathy Williams. Judy Griffiths was pleased with her pot of spring tulips. Frank Lindskoog stocked up on wine by choosing a bottle of rose and one of sauvignon blanc. Barbara Baughman preferred the bottle of blush chablis. Billie Ricker took home both boxes of Chocky Sticks, one chocolate and one strawberry. Once again, a big thank you goes to Larry for providing a lovely assortment of goodies for the raffle.

Friends: If you know of someone who is ill or in need of cheering up, and would like their name on the Sunshine List please phone Marlena Tygett at: (209) 957 4058

Ed. Note: April 27, 2018: Health Update — I just spoke with Marlena and Dave. He is increasing in strength and mental capacity. He has been home for a week and a half now and is recovering nicely. Looking in on him is a care giver who visits several times a week. He is eating regularly and his mental capacity is improving greatly. Love and Prayers from us all Dave!
