Welcome to the first edition of the California Connection! As promised, the next issue will come to you via email in full color, with links to additional information and video. Special thanks to all the Chapter Presidents for updating a list of email addresses for Chapter members. We hope you enjoy. It has been fun creating the new newsletter.

Registration for the 2016 California State Convention will be done for the first time online. It is so easy. See page 5 for instructions. This process will not only be easier for our members, but will enhance the efficiency of registration for the Convention data base person and registrar. But wait, more sophisticated options are coming……..

Members have asked for electronic payments for State events. Which method of payment do you normally use? Please take a short

survey as described on page 4. The data from the survey will enable the Executive Committee and Finance Committee to make an informed decision about which electronic payments to select. The 2017 Convention registration will certainly be even more efficient and accommodating.

International is even making dreams come true. It you haven’t seen the new, secure International website that is easier to navigate, you must have a look. Take a moment to update your member profile so you can use the members-only area to join the communities that have been formed to allow you to share information regarding membership, mentoring among DKG members, travel, the arts, professional collaboration, book reviews and ideas for publicizing DKG. Our own, Stacey Chicoine, has produced a video to walk you through the process of updating

your profile. Once on the International website, just click on the Communications and Publicity Committee page. You will need your membership ID#, which is on your membership card or can be obtained from your Chapter Treasurer. Your Chapter President has the password.

I look forward to seeing you at the 2016 California State Convention in Fresno. Continue to turn your dreams into reality, inspire and mentor others.

Janis Barr, Zeta Iota DKG California State President

Websites Offer a Variety of Chapter Program Ideas

Do you need a program idea for a Chapter meeting? DKG International presents successful meeting ideas which are linked to dkgcalifornia.org. Additionally, Chapters throughout California continue to implement the goals of Educational Excellence through their activities.

1. Empowering Women Through Leadership Opportunities Sharon Nakata, president of Gamma Lambda, Area IX, includes a segment called “Talk Times” during each meeting to allow Chapter members to share ideas. Working teachers talk about classroom ideas shared on Pinterest or Teachers Pay Teachers, a site where teachers sell original classroom ideas.

2. Promoting Educational Excellence Through Programs and Projects In Area XVII, Tau Chapter is supporting an Early Career Educator who works at a high poverty school. Chapter members who are retired teachers work with individual children helping them to improve their reading skills. By the end of the year, the Chapter will have assisted twelve students.

3. Changing Global Awareness Through Collaboration Worldwide In Area XVIII, Eta Epsilon Chapter featured Opel Singleton at their January meeting. Opel, a member of the Riverside County Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force, spoke about human trafficking and heightened the awareness of Chapter members.

The Educational Excellence Committee would like to hear about your Chapter programs. In February a survey will be posted on dkgcalifornia.org. Please complete the survey and we’ll share your excellent ideas.

Membership Matters

It’s Time to Celebrate California’s 3 R’s: Recruit, Retain, Reinstate!

During this biennium, DKG California State members are celebrating the 3 R’s of Membership: Recruit, Retain,

Reinstate. How can your Chapter celebrate the 3 R’s? By celebrating as your Chapter grows with new and reinstated members, by acknowledging the efforts and achievements of members who have retained their membership in the Society, and lastly, by honoring the memory of those who have left us.

“The only group who has ever given me any award is DKG.” DKG members are outstanding educators. Make sure your Chapter members are recognized!

The Celebration of Life ceremony, a special time of remembering and celebrating the lives of DKG Sisters who have passed away, is held each year at the State Convention. This year Anne Stone, Celebration of Life Chairman, will facilitate the ceremony during Convention on Sunday morning, May 1. For more information, please contact Anne Stone by email at [email protected].

Filing of forms 6 and 2 by Chapters will ensure deceased members are included in this year’s ceremony. Fill out Form 6 and submit it upon the death of a member. These forms provide the information needed to plan the Celebration of Life ceremony. Form 2, the annual necrology form, was due February 1, but if your Chapter has not submitted it, do it now. Send forms to Carla Peterson at [email protected] or mail to 9060 Green Valley Road, Sebastopol. CA 95472.

Bring Your Business Card

Bring your personalized business card that reflects your professionalism as a member of DKG or your position as an educator. Members are encouraged to use business cards as they reach out to non-members in identifying who they are as an educator and/or member of DKG. During your visit to Members’ Mall, drop your “business card” into the designated receptacle to enter a drawing. Only business cards that reflect your DKG and/or professional educator affiliation will be eligible to win the drawing.

DKG News Through the Years

Have you ever wondered why The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International was kept secret for decades? The story behind DKG’s one-time “secret” is fascinating and well worth sharing with other women educators, especially with women you’re recruiting.

Throughout the nineteenth century, college men formed groups to discuss current events, literature and professional topics. By the early 1920’s there were eighteen male national honor, academic or professional organizations. Forming clubs with like-minded peers, members could explore academic interests in greater detail. Women were not allowed to become members.

Each club was established to build brotherhood among members, cultivate strengths, promote their profession, and provide assistance. These organizations were motivated by the thought that as college men, members were more highly educated than their peers who were not members. Since Greek and Latin languages exemplified intellectual standing, Greek letters were used for the name.

Women members of the teaching profession were treated as a class of public servants without social or economic status. Dr. Annie Webb Blanton’s vision was to elevate the women of the education profession to the same standards as the two male teacher organizations, Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Delta Kappa.

In 1929, Dr. Blanton began to see her vision come to life when, along with fellow women educators, ideas for the structure of a women educator’s organization and the purpose and procedures were developed gradually through frequent secret meetings and a great deal of letter writing. These women developed the constitution and established the organization which they knew must be kept secret.

Using Greek letters which meant “key women educators”, The Kappa Gamma Delta Society was chosen for the name. Within a few weeks, Dr. Blanton learned that a national aeronautic fraternity had the same name. With the need for changing the name, the founders decided to rearrange the letters to Delta Kappa Gamma to preserve the essential meaning, key women educators, but still keep the meaning a secret. Incorporation and charter for the Society was granted August, 1929. Dr. Blanton succeeded in organizing Delta Kappa Gamma, this once secret Society, to support women teachers dealing with unjust discrimination. The Founders risked their security and loss of employment by working within this new organization to bring about change. Today, we pay tribute to the Founders for their courage and bravery, for their strength of purpose which has inspired those of us who have followed, and for their dedication and faith in the capacity of women for united effort in fellowship and educational excellence

Treasure the Past …

Naming the Society: A Once-secret Story

July, 1981 Sylvia Young, known as an idea person, assisted Eleanor Taylor, Chairman of the new Financial Development Committee, with the production of items, mainly scarves and stationery, to sell at state functions. This idea is now known as the DKG California State Store.

July, 1985 A moving van arrived at the Chi State Office, housed in a rented office on J Street in Sacramento to move furniture and equipment to the newly purchased Chi State Education Center on University Avenue. All funds for this new office were raised by members.

January, 1997 Chella Gonsalves, Beta Sigma Chapter, Area VII, whose Teacher and Child art is displayed in the foyer of The Education Center, had four drawings selected for inclusion in the Spring, 1997 issue of The Delta Kappa Gamma Bulletin.

It’s time for you to join in the Awards/Recognition Committee’s great fishing expedition. Get your tackle box in order and continue to record all the criterion points on the Honor Chapter Award

form. Update the information, survey your Chapter, and be sure to keep score on the form so you can be an award winning Chapter. Chapters should troll along and fill this form in as the year progresses.

Send the completed form to your Area Director by March 1, 2016! Your Chapter will be honored at the 2016 Convention breakfast on Sunday and in the Convention program. Three ways to honor Chapter members are:

Outstanding Service to the Chapter for a member who has served in a leadership role in at least two capacities.

Public Service for a member who is making an outstanding contribution in the area of public service with an emphasis on youth and education.

Career/Professional Service for a member who has established an educational program or project, making a positive impact on the profession.

T

This is a Chapter decision, but the committee would like to honor your members in the California State Convention Program. Please send a copy of your honorees to your Area Director by March 1, 2016.

Area Service Awards are also a way to recognize a member for outstanding service at the Area level:

Public Service

Honorees will be recognized in the California State Convention Program. Submit this form to the person listed by March 1, 2016.

The Community Service/Youth at Risk Project Recognition form is due on March 1, 2016. This recognition is a way for Chapters to meaningfully reach out to their communities to alleviate some of the hardships facing youth and families. Projects should emphasize the importance of literacy and the many forms it can take.

Send a description of the project to the Awards and Recognition Committee so that you too can be recognized in the California State Convention program. All the forms needed for submission can be found at dkgcalifornia.org.

California’s World Fellowship Student Performs on Three Continents

In the fall of 2014, World Fellowship student Gunta Liepina arrived from Latvia to study for a Master of Dance Arts Degree at the University of California Irvine. Her family visited her for Christmas Break and she returned to Latvia for the summer of 2015. While home for the summer, Gunta traveled to Rome, Italy to participate in the Festival Two Lands, One Voice, a collaboration among students from University of Rome Tor Vergata and Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. The company performed at the Brazilian Embassy on Via della Conciliazione in the Trasteve area of Rome.

Upon Gunta’s return to Irvine in the fall of 2015, she was chosen to travel to Beijing to perform at the International Creative Dance Seminar. Gunta is now back to her regular classes, adhering to a practice and performance schedule, and enjoying Southern California life-style until graduation this spring.

Several Chapters have hosted Gunta at Chapter meetings and some members have attended her performances. Gunta attended the Area XVI Hands Across the Border luncheon in October. She will keep members apprised of future performances. If you would like to send Gunta a card, consult your Chapter President or Global Awareness Chairman for her address.
