NW Regional Conference—Many Hands Make for Light Work...

Alpha Pi State members will play many roles and complete many duties at the upcoming NW Regional Convention.

Each of us will be an ambassador for our chapters, state, and Society in greeting and assisting our visiting DKG sisters

and guests. Any member from Alpha Pi State who purchases a meal ticket will be selected randomly to be a table

hostess by Sandi Causey, Conference Registrar. Keitha Neuharth of Delta will chair the hostesses committee with Bev

Day of Delta and provide instructions to the Hostess Committee. This is an opportunity to facilitate introductions and

encourage conversations promoting friendship and closer connections with new friends or reconnections with those

we have previously met. But rest assured, that the emphasis and reward is friendship, involvement, and connected-

ness!

Other avenues for service are varied and numerous. Although all committee chairs have not been determined, Dr.

Rhonda R. Anderson and the Steering Committee would like to thank the following who have agreed to serve in vari-

ous positions. They will be calling on you to assist them. Please say, “Yes”, and “How can I help?” Remember in this

endeavor, the key and most important word is together. Together, we can and will host an impressive and rewarding

NW Regional.

the memberships of the other fifteen NW provinces/states, as well as guests from other regions who may join us.

Members are stepping forward and have agreed to chair various committees. These ladies will be seeking others

to facilitate committee responsibilities. Please say yes when you are contacted!

NW Regional Conference is hosted by ALL Alpha Pi State members and will be accomplished together. Our Inter-

national President Carolyn Pittman spoke of the Butterfly Effect in Nashville and in the November/December DKG

News. Each member’s participation and actions make a difference, but en masse Alpha Pi State members will im-

pact our Society. What a wonderful opportunity to create a rich a rewarding experience for our guests as well as

2017 Regional Conference Theme Announced

Artemis House to Receive DKG Donations at NW Regional Conference

by Dr. Rhonda R. Anderson, NW Regional Director

The NW Regional Conference theme is the same as the International theme for 2016-2018: Leading Women Educa-

tors Impacting Education World Wide.

The underlying theme is connected to International President’s idea of the Butterfly Effect. One butterfly moves so many air molecules, two butterflies move twice as many, three...etc. creating a stronger effect of movement. The more unity or connectedness that we have in our lives, the stronger and more effective we are. The NW Regional Conference is on Connectedness. The three meals are entitled: Connecting: Thoughts, Feelings, Actions Luncheon (Thursday) Connecting: Strength through Involvement Brunch (Friday) Connecting: Leadership and Change Dinner (Saturday)

Empowerment of people comes through connection. As members of the NW Regional Conference, we are connected

to the place that hosts the conference, and hopefully, both the community of Spearfish and our members will have

grown or become better in the week that we are connected during the conference. Keeping that in mind, I would like

our NW Region to donate to a shelter, the Artemis House in Spearfish, which provides a victim of violence interven-

tion program for mainly women and children.

The director of the Artemis House, Mary Koens, stated that approximately 300 moms and children are served each

year. She suggested that we might donate a mixture of empowerment items:

Underwear, socks, shampoo, deodorant, feminine hygiene products, books with empowerment/self-help themes,

children’s games, crayons/colored markers, coloring books, pencils, crochet thread and hooks. All items to help

moms and children pass the time and stay focused on the positive.

Each Convention attendee is asked to bring donation items. Your current State or Province President will deco-

rate/design a bag that is the size of a paper grocery bag with a theme that is related to connectedness or empow-

erment. At the conference, each attendee will put her items in the State bag. The bags will be displayed and re-

viewed for creativeness by Conference attendees.

Mary Koens, Director of the Artemis House, will be presented with the items in the decorated bags at the NW Re-

gional Conference.

Jan Skott Scholarship Chair

Anderson Assigned as Representative of International

Dr. Rhonda R. Anderson, NW Regional Director, has been assigned by International President Carolyn Pittman to be

the keynote speaker at three Conferences in the Spring of 2017. At the end of March Anderson will be in the SE Re-

gion at the State Convention in Jackson, Mississippi. In April she will be in the NW Region at the State Convention in

Cheyenne, Wyoming, and in mid-May Anderson will be in the European Region at the State Convention in The Neth-

erlands. While at the conventions, Anderson serves at the will of the international president and helps the state pres-

idents with the conventions in any way possible. Some of her duties could be to help with installation of new officers,

to be the keynote speaker, to present a breakout session, to be on discussion panels, to help strengthen involvement

and leadership in chapters. Anderson might also be the representative to South Dakota at the state convention in

Chamberlain mid-June.

Wood and Anderson Plan to Attend European Regional

Elizabeth Wood and Dr. Rhonda R. Anderson from Mu Chapter of Sioux Falls plan to attend the 2017 European Re-

gional in Tallinn, Estonia July 26-29. At the Conference, they hope to present individual breakout sessions and devel-

op and give a breakout session together.

Wood and Anderson want to encourage members to take advantage of going to other regional conferences especial-

Drs. Pauli and Sterling Community Service Trip to Belize

Dr. Vicki Sterling and Dr. Crystal Pauli flew to Belize over spring break March 2016. Yes, it included the nor-mal break of sun, fun ,and adventure, but the focus was to take 11 Dakota State University students for a service-learning trip of a lifetime. Victorious Nazarene Primary School or Pre-K through 8th grade students in San Jose Succotz, Belize was without a library. The focus of the trip was to fulfill two goals requested by the elementary teachers and principal: (1) build English fluency in reading and writing at the elementary level, and (2) provide books for an elementary library. Sue Filler, a Dakota State University adjunct professor in the College of Education, had made previous visits to the school and understood the needs of the students and teachers. DSU students and faculty started a campaign of “Books for Belize” during the fall semester. Gently-used reading books for K-8 started pouring into the university. We carried through customs 1,100 pounds of books. The first day of arriving at the school, students painted an unused classroom bright colors for the library and started sorting through the books according to grade level. The teachers and children were amazed at the variety of books. To watch them explore the selection and see their hunger to read, was worth all the heavy bag handling. The school also requested help with English scores on the students’ national exams. In Belize, the students speak Spanish, Mayan or Creole at home, but in school and for business, English is the national language. Therefore, the children come to school knowing little English. The first day there was no school for the chil-dren, but the teachers were given an all-day in-service by Dr. Pauli and Dr. Sterling. Teachers were interest-ed in learning classroom strategies. Some teachers asked us to model strategies, especially comprehen-sion, in their classrooms so they could see students’ response. University students also demonstrated strategies they had learned in their methods classes.

DSU student, Tiffany Plummer, and one of

the children of the retreat’s caretaker.. The

children were very interested in meeting our

students and going through the extra books.

This little girl’s mommy and grandma cooked

our evening meals.

Below: Meeting the children during their gath-

ering time on the first day. What an adventure

for all of us.

Weekends provided time to explore Belize. Belize is a small country. In fact, the Central American country would fit into the state of South Dakota nine times. The first weekend was spent on the small limestone coral island of Caye Caulker off the coast of Belize; the island was accessible by high-speed water taxi. During our sojourn on the island, students tried out snorkeling and the ones who were previously certified, were able to go scuba diving. Once in the rain forest, evenings and the last weekend were spent exploring the area and enjoying interactions with the local people. We climbed Black Rock Mountain, where a local artisan showed us how to harvest slate suitable for carving. We went to his studio where we could purchase beautiful carvings, and met his family. We were also able to climb around on the largest Mayan ruins in the world about 2 miles from the school. Our knowledgeable guide provided insight of culture and the restoration process to find these hidden cities.

For our daily living experiences, the group stayed in an open-air, warm bunkhouse on the campus of the school. The amenities include potable running water and flushing toilets, but no access to hot water. During the length of their stay, our diet consisted of rice, beans, chicken and tortillas, along with local fruits (mostly bananas) and vegetables. All expenses for housing, drinking water, food and travel were placed on all the students and faculty. Crystal and Vicki were fortunate to receive from Alpha Pi Sisters scholarships for travel and we would like to say thank you. Crystal received the Maxine Wiseman Travel/ Study Award and Vicki received the Dr. Janet Shelver Travel/ Study Award. Thank you also to the Scholarship Committee for reading our proposal.

1,100 pounds of books looks like! The pickup bed was full of suitcases of books.

Vicki & Crystal delivered them to the school. DSU students did the heavy work

of hauling them into the new library! The children and teachers were so excited;

it was heart-warming, but also very humbling, to see their reactions.
