President Carols Message Greetings, Tau members, from your newpresident, Several of us will be new at the on- set of this year for many reasons. We have some new committee chairs, new members, and new ide- as. The new initiates are Jennifer Wyre, Tabitha Silvey, Misti Maples, Kate Lootens, and Amy Fowler. Be sure to greet them. To help me launch into this biennium, I attended the Delta State Leadership Conference in April. There I met the Delta State President, Karen Evans, who gave an update on State happenings including changes in by-laws. One hot item that was a suggested change was the name of the organiza- tion. Karen Evansemail Monday Mattersreported that it was voted to keep the name Delta Kappa Gamma International. That relieved a concern for me. I am looking forward to this meeting when we break into committees. This will enable us to direct our thoughts and efforts to specific areas and make decisions as to what Tau chapter needs to accomplish. Bring your ideas. Thanks to the Lake Area members who planned this meeting: Karen Blevins, Julie Martin, Robin Adams, Debbie Ferguson, Beverly Livingston, and Judy Stanford. Special thanks to Judy Stanford, my heroine, for spending two hours guiding and directing my efforts to give this year a good start. She knows everything. More huge thanks to Nancy Lewis who is a phone call away for answering my many questions. All Tau members work together. That is what makes us a great chapter. The regular meeting of Tau Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma met on April 14, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. at the Ninth Street Christian Church, Eldon, Missouri.

President Nancy Lewis called the meeting to order. She expressed her goals for her Biennium, one of which was to complete and certify the Chapter website, which was finalized last October. She said she was saddened with the loss of five members but rejoices with the initiation of ten of our new initiates who will join our chapter today. Nancy also wanted to insure that our meetings were informative and give an opportunity to build relationships with each other. She also expressed gratitude to the team of officers and each member who have all contributed to the well-being and growth of Tau Chapter. Under Joys and Concerns, Karen Blevins reported that Debbie Misenhelter is not well. Her spirits are good, and continues to have a very positive attitude. She would enjoy calls and notes from our mem-bers. Karen gave each one a card with Debbie’s info. We missed Pat Seifert and Charlotte Dudenhoeffer: both tending to their husbands. Cards would be appreciated to these two ladies. Alice Van Landuyt asked members to “test drive” a car at the former Chrysler car dealer. For each ve-hicle driven, $20 would be given to the LEAP Robotics Team, leaving on Tuesday for competition in Tex-as. The Robotics Team was under the direction of Eldon Upper Elementary teacher Jerry Barsby, who passed away suddenly one week ago. Several members participated, and others gave a donation to help the students in their fund-raising. President Lewis shared that Carol Cummings was with her family celebrating her special great-granddaughter’s first birthday. Members signed an attendance sheet with 18 members, 10 initiates, one guest and our two Recruitment Grant Recipients and their mothers present. We are happy to have Beth Dampf rejoining our chapter in her “semi-retirement” years. Betty Mudd moved and Judy Stanford seconded to accept the Minutes of the February 17, 2018, meet-ing as published in the April Tau Tales. Motion carried. Treasurer Paulette Fischer was absent due to attending the NW Area Conference in Independence, Missouri, fulfilling her duties as Delta State’s Treasurer. Her monthly report was printed in the April Tau Tales and also passed out at the meeting. Dana Burkle moved and Ruth Willhite seconded to approve the report. Motion carried. Under Old Business, President Lewis thanked the committee of Amy Potts and Lianne Hollander for their work on creating the Tau Chapter tri-fold poster which will be taken to the NE Area Conference. Registration for the NE Area Conference is due today and can be paid to Arlene Broeker. The speaker will be Carrie Tergin, Mayor of Jefferson City. Planning also to be in attendance is the International Re-cipient of the World Fellowship Scholarship, Nargiza Buranova from Kazakhstan who will be receiving her Masters Degree in Special Education from the University of Missouri. Under New Business, Nancy submitted her President’s Report in February in which she said Tau Chap-ter had high rankings by hosting a successful Mid-MO council meeting and good participation of mem-bers in convention and non-chapter meetings. Raising money through meal donations and raffle baskets has maintained our Recruitment Grants, vital to assisting high school graduates to continue their educa-tion and become teachers. Even though moving soon, Nancy will remain as the Webmaster for Tau Chapter, for which everyone is grateful for her dedication and diligence her service to us. She asked all members to submit the Member Survey so the Executive Board can begin work on the next biennium. Nancy also needs new initiates to submit their profile page and any member with changes to their profile to do the same. (Please continue to page 3.)

There will be several issues for delegates to consider and vote on at the 2018 International Convention in Austin, Texas, in July. One proposal is to change our name to “Women Educators International (DKG).” Another of special importance is the proposal of including women in their college years to be-come members instead of waiting for membership in their teaching career. According to Carolyn Pittman, International President, all of the proposed amendments to the DKG Constitution and Interna-tional Standing Rules are meant to “simplify and move the Society forward.” The Ceremony of Initiation was then held for Brandy Albrecht, Brittany Davenport, Stacey Dun-ham, Melissa Gerhart, Bobbie L. Grant, Twyla Limbach, Amy Pratt, Michelle Robinett, Debra Sash, and Amy Wilhelm. Each signed our book and received a red rose and certificate. We sang the Delta Kappa Gamma Song with picture taking followed to commemorate the special day. Tau Chapter is very excited to have these talented women educators join us! Gracie Fields then honored Ruth Willhite as our 2018 Lady of Distinction. Ruth, chair of the Recruit-ment Grant Committee for many years, has worked diligently to streamline the process to make selec-tion of our recipients efficient. She has been a dedicated member of Delta Kappa Gamma for 27 years, the last 17 with Tau. She began her career teaching with a two-year certificate, completing her degree by attending summer sessions. Her first position was in a rural school with 13 students in all 8 grades and retiring 30 years later from Moreau Heights School in Jefferson City. Tau Chapter is honored to celebrate Ruth Willhite as our 2018 Lady of Distinction! Arlene Broeker then installed the new officers for the 2018-2020 biennium. They are—President Carol Cummings, First Vice President Charlotte Dudenhoeffer (Nancy Lewis stood for both these ladies), Second Vice President Julie Martin and Secretary Robin Adams. Julie Martin was present-ed a red rose by outgoing Second Vice President, Gracie Fields. Robin Adams received a red rose from outgoing Secretary, Alice Van Landuyt. President Nancy Lewis read a letter from incoming President Carol Cummings. In it she congratulated our new initiates and is excited to meet them at the next meeting; congratulated the two Recruitment Grant Recipients, Taylor Kidwell and Ashley Sullentrup; thanked Nancy Lewis for making the tran-sition from president to president go smoothly; and thanked Paulette Fischer for helping with transporta-tion. Tau Chapter looks forward to continued success under the leadership of President Carol. Ruth Willhite then awarded the two Recruitment Grants to Taylor Kidwell and Ashley Sullentrup. Taylor plans to be a third grade special education teacher; and Ashley, also, plans to go into the field of special education. We wish them the best as they begin their journey. Dana Burkle is proud to share that her daughter, Katie Burkle Bennett, has a new book just published entitled Heavenly Minded Mom. President Nancy Lewis thanked the Eldon Committee: Sharon Buster, Gracie Fields, Gloria Fields, Dana Burkle, Sara Wallis and Alice Van Landuyt for the decorations, salad luncheon, and dessert. The special placemats were designed and written by Gracie Fields on the theme of but-terflies representing spring and new birth, as our new initiates represent new growth for Tau Chapter. After singing the Table Grace, the meeting was adjourned. A delicious meal of salads and desserts was served by the Eldon committee. Tau Chapter’s next meeting will be on August 4, 2018. It will include an Initi-ation Ceremony for the initiates who were unable to attend the April meeting. Details to follow. Alice Van Landuyt Recording Secretary

Tau Chapter Delta Kappa Gamma Treasurer’s Reports June 30, 2018 Treasurer Paulette Fischer

Please notice the Proposed Budget for 2018-2019. The projected balance for the end of the fiscal year is lower than we would like. We have estimated income low and expenses high, but are hopeful that our numbers will be more optimistic. Also, the $300 allowed for the President’s state convention expense is more than will be necessary. I will be able to share transportation and hotel expense with Carol from my budget as State Executive Sec-retary-Treasurer. Thanks, Paulette Fischer Tau Chapter Treasurer

Ladies, Our annual dues will once again be $68. Of that amount, $40 goes to International, $12 goes to State, $15 stays with Tau Chapter -- $5 of that is earmarked for our Recruitment Grants. The remaining $1 is for scholarships at the state and international levels. You may send me a check – made out to Tau Chapter – any time, or give me your payment at a meeting. The deadline for dues payment is October 31.

April 14 Meeting Highlights

2018 DKG Lady of Distinction Ruth Willhite The individual I am honored to present to

my fellow sisters for this year’s prestigious

Lady of Distinction award is a gentle, hum-

ble soul, whose unassuming contributions

to our society year after year result in ful-filling what Tau is: seeing some one’s

dream to become an educator be realized

with our help.

Ruth has tirelessly served as Recruitment

Grant Chairman for the last six years and

shared with me that she has found great

enjoyment working in this area. Ruth be-

came a member of DKG on April 1, 1991, to

Gamma Lambda Chapter. She then trans-

ferred into Tau Chapter on October 31,

2001: a member of DKG for the last 27 years.

Ruth earned a B.S. degree in Education and taught for 30 years. Now hear her own words of her personal school career as a child and as a teacher.

"When I was six, I started to school at Svold near Cavalier, North Dakota, fifteen miles from the Canadian

border. It was the very school where my mother taught for several years when she boarded with my father's

parents. I was an inquisitive and talkative child who sometimes had to be punished for breaking the rules

that I had been warned about at home. Several times that winter, Daddy had to take me to school on the

big farm sled pulled by horse or tractor because of the deep snow. I always liked the horse better because it

didn't throw snow back on us.

“In the summer after I turned 7, dad and mom decided to sell the farm and equipment and move to Missouri.

Dad was not feeling well; the harsh winters were extremely hard on him. After searching the area near

Marshfield, MO, they found a 120 acre farm.

Our local district sent our small group of students to the Niangua Consolidated School. By the time I was in

the 5th grade, our rural Pack School gained enough students to open the school again. When I was in 8th grade, my mother was hired to teach there. At the time I began high school, my parents moved us to Con-

way with a better school district. I found many friends and graduated as Valedictorian in a class of 300.

From there with a scholarship, I began my college education at Southwest Missouri State College.

“In the early sixties a student could begin teaching on a two year certificate: I taught and finished my college

degree by attending summer sessions: so rewarding to me and my parents with four siblings yet at home.

“My first teaching experience before I had finished college was a rural one room school in Laclede County

north of Lebanon. I had 13 students in all 8 grades: preparation was a difficult task. My college roommate

suggested I apply to teach at a school near Pacific, MO. I had three wonderful years of teaching eager

learners. I met my husband in that community where he was working on the Purina Research Farm. We

were married at our church in Gray Summit, MO, and we moved to Mexico, MO, where he gained employ-

ment.

“I taught for five years in the Mexico, MO school district. Then my husband’s sales company moved him to Bowling Green where I taught, also. Our two children began school tat Bowling Green, a great community.

The company moved him to Jefferson City to be their sales supervisor. I applied to teach in the district and

was placed my first five years at North School. I was transferred to Moreau Heights School to teach math,

science, and language arts when we were departmentalized. The staff, parents, and students made my fi-

nal teaching career of 30 years a great one to remember." Ruth, we recognize you today for your dedication, your integrity, your unwavering contributions to the field of education, and to your fellow sister educators. We, your sisters in Delta Kappa Gamma Tau, applaud you as our Lady of Distinction. Submitted by Gracie Fields

Hello Everyone I just wanted to give all of you a heads up that you will not need to buy pencils for the Tau Teachers Care Project this year. I have enough left over from last year to use for the upcoming year. Alice Van Landudyt had the good fortune to find a whole lot at a garage sale so thanks to her we are in good shape. I want to thank each of you for your gener-osity in the past to make this project take off. I have contacted all the schools and in the fall we will be giving out welcome gifts for 80 new first year teachers. I also wanted to let you know this will be my last year to do this project . So…be thinking of which of you would like to take

over. I will be happy to explain everything to you and give you the school contact list. Thank you and I hope you are enjoying your summer! Gracie Fields

Greetings to all of you from Saint Joseph! My husband and I have settled into our new home and are enjoying being closer to family. I will continue to be involved in Tau Chapter as Webmas-ter. I am counting on all officers and members to keep in touch about chapter happenings and updating your person-al information. I will be glad to update anything as I get new information. Our website needs to have current and accurate information if it is to be helpful to everyone. I have made several updates recently and am still working on history and membership. I am working on updates that will make it easier to navigate to get to the information you

need. Both of those sections will be split up into several tabs instead of the lengthy pag-es they are now. I also plan to add more information about DKG which may necessitate some rearrangement. So be watching for these updates that I hope to complete by Sep-tember 1.
