AMO Support for the Syrian Refugee Crisis – Call to Action
Dear Colleagues,
Like you, I have been deeply affected by the disturbing images and stark realities of the Syrian
refugee crisis. It is a situation that cries out for compassion and action.
AMO is challenging all of its member municipalities to donate at least $100 to aid in the
international effort to resettle the Syrian refugees in safe countries. We hope to raise at least
$40,000. This goal will help save two families and if we raise a greater amount, we can help save
more families.
Donations can be made by cheque payable to Association of Municipalities of Ontario, with
"Syrian Refugee Crisis" in the description field, and forwarded by Friday, October 2.
AMO will donate all of the proceeds to Lifeline Syria. This organization is seeking to resettle
and integrate 1,000 Syrian refugees in Ontario over the next two years, reuniting them with their
families. Lifeline Syria is a community-based initiative that will do this by helping to recruit,
train, and match private refugee sponsors in Ontario with Syrian refugees approved for
resettlement by the federal government. Sponsors will include organizations, individuals, or
groups of individuals such as faith-based groups. The Ontario government has provided seed
funding to Lifeline Syria to support its work but it is reliant on public donations to fulfill its
mandate. More information about the organization and the initiative is found on the Lifeline
Syria website.
I know how municipal governments in Ontario rally to help one another and their neighbours. I
implore you to accept this challenge and donate to this worthy cause. It is one small way we can
help ease the suffering of others through our financial contributions.
Sincerely,
Gary McNamara
President, Association of Municipalities of Ontario

Mayor Davis’ War Diaries
We recently received and accepted a donation of artifacts relating to
the life of Herbert J. Davis, a former mayor of Aylmer. Included in
the donation were photos, letters, veterinary items, and his war
diaries.
H.J. Davis served as the mayor from 1927-1928, and 1938-1940. He
meticulously documented his time in the war, and we now have his
diaries from 1915, 1916, 1917, and 1918. They document, not only
the war-aspects, but also every day life including what they ate, the
friendships he made, and what they did in their spare time.
Sometimes the things you find tucked inside the pages can tell you
just as much as the words written in them. Tucked away on the
inside of the diaries were several items, including a bible study
card, notes he wrote and notes from his friends, insurance
information, a card for a laundry in Ypres, Belgium, and two photos
of unidentified women.
Below are select entries from his time overseas:
November 9, 1915 – “got up at 3 and went to guns until 6 first time
in my life large day. I saw my first gun go off. Battery fired 60 rounds
about 24 rounds high explosive then whole brigade pumped the lead
into a German Battery at 205 then off and on all afternoon. Germans
were shelling Kemmel I saw several light an awful mess brought down
the last estaminet we had one shell burst in front of a gun some noise.”
February 24, 1916 “Cold as fury this morning ride per usual. Fritz
dropped bombs in Bailleul today no damage. French brought down a
Zep yesterday near Bailleul. Not living very good down here
Thompson is a rotten cook, he is so lazy“
April 3rd 1916 “Frtiz still raising the dickens up around St. Eloi. We
are having a lot of causalities over it.”

War Diary Excerpts Con’t
April 27 1916 “we took 2 prisoners. Gas expected. The tear gas
was so bad infantry put on their helmets. Have an awful time
getting rations”
July 8 1916 “a quiet day until about 4 then we started shooting
Frtiz up. We fired about 30 rounds they gave our front line hell.”
April 7, 1917 “a terrific bombardment about 5 this morning.
Rained all night.”
April 11, 1917 “this is the worst country in the world. It is
snowing nearly all day.”
April 21, 1917“a great mix up last night. 7 of 16 killed. Mounds
of horses. Frtiz shelled road in grand style. None of the guns
arrived in position”
May 28, 1917 -”Fritz was nasty last night. He was shelling
uncomfortably close most of the night. I was cook today, so of
course we had some good meals. Beautiful weather. Far too nice
to fight. We put in the time playing horseshoes”
June 13, 1917 “a very large day. Light (daylight) raid on London
took place today. 80 killed and 400 wounded is the latest. It was
awful”
September 5, 1917 “A beautiful day. Went to Boulonge. Met a
