HOliDAy MAil fOr HerOes prOgrAMEach year the Red Cross collects cards between October and early December and then distributes them at military installations, veterans hospitals, and in other locations. In addition to sending cards on your own, you may want to start making plans to host card signing parties or card making parties. Here are a few guidelines to help you on your way:• Every card received will be screened for hazardous materials by Pitney Bowes and then reviewed by Red Cross volunteers working around the country.• Ensure that all cards are signed.• Use generic salutations such as “Dear Service Member.” Cards addressed to specific individuals can not be delivered through this program.• Only cards are being accepted. Do not send or include letters.• Do not include email or home addresses on the cards: the program is not meant to foster pen pal relationships.• Do not include inserts of any kind, including photos: these items will be removed during the reviewing process.• Please refrain from choosing cards with glitter or using loose glitter as it can aggravate health issues of ill and injured warriors.• If you are mailing a large quantity of cards, please bundle them and place them in large mailing envelopes or flat rate postal shipping boxes. Each card does not need its own envelope, as envelopes will be removed from all cards before distribution.• All holiday greetings should be addressed and sent to:

Holiday Mail for HeroesP.O. Box 5456Capitol Heights, MD 20791-5456

The deadline for having cards to the P.O. Box is Friday, December 7th.Holiday cards received after this date cannot be guaranteed delivery.

UMW Book Club Our December UMW selection is Silent Night: The Story of the World War I Christmas Truce by Stanley Weintraub. This is a true story of soldiers from opposing armies who declared peace, climbed out of their trenches, and celebrated Christmas together. We will have our final meet-ing of 2012 on Thursday morning, December 6, at 10:00 at Panera Bread on William Cannon. Please contact Diana Goodloe at 906-1931 or [email protected] if you have questions.

Angel tree prison MinistryThis unique ministry gives Oak Hill UMC an opportunity to share Christ’s love at Christmas time each year by helping to meet the physi-cal, emotional, and spiritual needs of the families of prisoners. Participating in Angel Tree is a great way for all of us to lovingly answer the biblical call to minister to the least of these. Angel Tree works by connecting parents in prison with their children through the delivery of Christmas gifts. We purchase and deliver gifts in the name of their prisoner-parent which gives us an opportunity to share the Gospel to the children. Additional instructions and information is available at the tree which is usually located outside the sanctuary on Sunday’s or in Fellowship Hall - in advance - thank you. Don Roets / 512-633-5009 / [email protected]

Thank you -I was humbled when picking up the Sandy storm supplies early Sat. morning - it was incredible the amount of items that were donated in just a few days. A friend of mine felt called to help out those in need so he is taking off work this week to drive a truck and trailer

to NY to pass off the supplies - an email to God’s people at Oak Hill UMC to help out God’s people was answered - it does not amaze me that this community at Oak Hill responded so lovingly and quickly - it just humbles me to be part of such a community. Ian, myself, and those in New York that will receive your blessings all thank you. ~ Don Roets

Habitat for Humanity spring Methodist BuildYes, the build is still on track as is the fundraising! As you know, we are teaming with other Methodist churches in the Austin area to give a helping hand to a family in need. We provide the funding and labor to build the home but the family must put in 400 hours of “sweat equity” helping to build Habitat homes. The family will have a mortgage when they move into their new home. We build a quality, energy efficient home. If you missed the floor plan “square foot” sales in September, your next opportunity for donations is coming up: Gifts of Caring for the Christmas giving season. This is a great opportunity to give twice with the same gift: once to Habitat for Humanity while at the same time giving to a friend or loved one in the name of Habitat for Humanity. You can also give any Sunday by dropping a check in the offering plate. Just make the check out to “OHUMC” and put “Habitat for Humanity” in the memo line. Mark your calendar for the Applebee’s Pancake Breakfast on March 2. This is always lots of fun and a great fundraiser. Tickets go on sale in February, but remember, you must be present to eat! We can always use prayers for the success of the fundraising and the build. Call Jerry Morford at 301-3738 or send him an e-mail at [email protected] if you have questions about the Methodist Build.

Oak Hill United Methodist Church

r and r for Missions (reading and recycling)Who doesn’t like books? Who has too many books? The Chloe Circle at Oak Hill UMC has sponsored the BUCK A BOOK sale for the past 2 years to raise funds for various mission projects…..It is a project that the whole congregation (and pre-school families) participate in. The church family is notified a month in advance to donate books they no longer want….this year we tried for 1400…ap-proximately 1 per member. (Although uncounted, we probably had 4 x’s that many donated). All books are sold for a BUCK ($1), with the exception of Bibles (which are given away). Leftover books were given away (some to the preschool, some to HEB children’s literacy program book drive, some to libraries, and some to Goodwill). This year we kept some for the Free Store, which is opening at St. Mark’s in January.

Outcomes?• Folks clean off their bookshelves then restock with ‘new’ books….all for a BUCK each!• Books can be recycled each year!• Over $1200 was raised for missions in Sierra Leone ($300 for building materials), Haiti ($300 for building materials), Tanzania ($200 for medical supplies for the persecuted Albinos), and our own Montopolis Center ($350 to be used as needed).• Fun was had by both buyers and sellers.

Chloe Circle members would like to express their appreciation to everyone who donated books and to everyone who purchased books. Thank you for your generosity and for helping others throughout the world! Who knew a book could provide so much?
