The CornerstoneThe Monthly Newsletter of the Paxton Federated Church
November, 2013
When I am gone, release me, let me go,I have so many things to see and do,
You mustn’t tie yourself to me with tears.Be thankful for our beautiful years.
I gave you my love, you can only guessHow much you gave me in happiness.
I thank you for the love you each have shown,But now it’s time I traveled alone.
So grieve awhile for me, if grieve you must,Then let your grieve be comforted by trust.
It’s only for a time that we must part,So bless the memories within your heart
I won’t be far away, for life goes on,And if you need me, call and I will come
Though you can’t see or touch me, I’ll be near,And if you listen with your heart, you’ll hear.
All my love around you soft and clear,And then, when you must come this way alone,
I’ll greet you with a smile, and say, “Welcome Home”.Absent from the body: Present with our LORD!

November Greetings to All, “HE Restoreth My Soul”
We must remember it is the 23rd Psalm and as David wrote it he did so with we Christians as the sheep and Jesus as our Shepherd. One might ask, “if we are one with HIM, why would we need restoring?” “Why would we be downcast?” David, who was much loved by God, knew what it was to be downcast and dejected. David had tasted defeat in his life and felt frustration of having fallen under temptation. David was acquainted with bitterness of feeling hopeless and without strength in himself. In Psalm 42:11 he cries out, “Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your HOPE in GOD....” Not many are acquainted with sheep as David or the author W.Phillip Keller of “A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23.” He commented as follows:
“Only those immediately acquainted with sheep and their habits understand the significance of a ‘cast’ sheep or a ‘cast down’ sheep. It is an old English shepherd’s term for a sheep that has turned over on its back and cannot get up again by itself. A cast sheep is a very pathetic sight. Lying on its back, its feet in the air, it flays away frantically struggling to stand up, without success. Sometimes it will bleat a little for help, but generally it lies there lashing about in frightened frustration. If the owner does not arrive on the scene within a reasonably short time, the sheep will die. This is but another reason why it is so essential for a careful sheep man to look over his flock everyday, counting them to see that all are able to be up and on their feet. If one or two are missing, often the first thought to flash into his mind is, “One of my sheep is cast down somewhere, I must go in search and set it on its feet again.” It is not only the shepherd who keeps a sharp eye for cast sheep, but also the predators. Buzzards, vultures, dogs, coyotes, and cougars know that a cast sheep is easy prey and death is not far off. With this in mind, I might think you are reflecting on yet another scripture, the pageantry and drama depicted for us in the magnificent story of the ninety and nine sheep with only one astray. There is a shepherd’s deep concern, his agonizing search, his longing to find the missing one, and his delight in restoring it not only to its feet but also to the flock as well as to himself. Keller goes on to say, “Within me there is a mingled sense of fear and joy: fear that it might be too late; joy that it was found at all.”
A true shepherd searches, gently bends down and whispers, pets, lifts and turns over the restored sheep. Awww, the comfort in knowing Jesus searches for us, finds us, whispers in our ears, tenderly lifts us back to our feet. What comfort. This past Sunday after nursing home service a daughter of one of the residents came to me and hugged me for bringing the message of 23rd Psalm to her and her mother and the rest of the folk there. She was comforted. I pray you are as well. But with all that said, she added something. As new insight was brought to her, she shared with me: “Once a minister shared with her, ‘BECAUSE’ - because the Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want, because the Lord is my shepherd, HE restores my soul. If you are cast down, HE is only a bleat away, call upon HIM now. May you know your soul is restored.

Brian in perfect attire ready to lead his Farm Credit survivor team to a first place victory (had a hat, too!) Multiple teams competed in questions and games.
Brian celebrated his birthday at an all-day meeting, and they remembered his birthday with a candle in a mini Reeses cup. The funny thing is, he doesn’t like peanut butter!
