Sharon Douglass Resigning Position as OHUMC Adult

Ministries DirectorAfter serving for 13 years as the Oak Hill UMC Director of Adult Ministries, Sharon Douglass is resigning her post to spend more time with friends and family. She recalls being asked to volunteer in this position by former Pastor Barbara Ruth. She took the assignment and built it into a signifi-cant part of our church leadership. Sharon’s leadership, dedication and devotion to her position and the church have been extremely important to our church and its growth. She remembers well the pleasure she has enjoyed with the growth of the church and the many programs and Sunday School classes that have to con-ducted and are being conducted. As a member since 1983—30 years, we know she will be continuing her active membership with us at Oak Hill. The church will be recognizing her at a reception in the near future.

Why I Love Oak Hill United Methodist ChurchWhen it is cold and gloomy outside or problems have you feeling down in the dumps, there is nothing as soothing as a warm bowl of homemade soup to set you straight.

Oak Hill UMC has always been like that pot of soup to us over the years. The church is the pot and the members are the ingredients to make the soup. The ingredients alone may be spicy like salt and pepper, offensive like onion, bitter like garlic, hard like a potato, and well, you get the idea. The finished product can be a gourmet delight. Soup

can be made from anything, even leftovers. These ingredients are placed in a large pot and steeped with the love of Jesus Christ until they become one, then (served to) shared with others as needed. If the pot gets low, just add more ingredients. That is why we love OHUMC.~ Pastor Pam Sheffield

The Adult Bible Class Alias the Friendship Bible ClassThirty years ago, give or take 5 years either way, Gail and I walked into Bible class. Being a grandson of a Methodist preacher, I knew will the importance of going to sunday school. Going to church meant going to Sunday school as well. I am quite sure that there are great Sunday school classes at Oak Hill, but none speaks to me as clearly as the study of the Bible. So I have given full support of this class for a long time, and now I can say I love the Friendship Bible Class as I love Oak Hill UMC.Whenever possible, I beat a hot trail to study the Bible, nothing like making my grandfather happy. I have discovered that giving new members a copy of the Good Book, a tradition of the Friendship Bible class, has provided many people with the foundation of the church. Regardless of the size that OHUMC might become, the camaraderie that occurs in our class is a treasure. I am relatively sure that the Friendship Bible class was one of the first organized Sunday School groups at Oak Hill, and hopefully it will continue to be as strong in study and friendship as it is now.~ Doug Beckley

United Methodist WomenMary/Martha Circle Coffee

Fellowship Hall - Monday, March11, 1:30 p.m.

UMW Book Club Our March UMW selection is One Simple Act: Discovering the Power of Generosity by Debbie McComber, who helps us become aware of how simple acts of generosity can lead to miraculous results for both the receiver and the giver. Our next meeting will be on Thursday morning, March 28, at 10:00 at Panera Bread on William Cannon. Please contact Diana Goodloe at 906-1931 or [email protected] if you have questions.

The Mary-Martha Circle will gather in the Fellowship Hall for coffee that will be prepared by Carol Hartman and Margaret Geiger. Our program will be conducted by Janece Hudson, who will be talking about her novel, Into Your Dreams.  Into Your Dreams can show you how to interpret and work with your physical, mental, and spiritual dreams to bring greater awareness of yourself, improved relationships, and a richer, healthier life. Coffee will begin at 1:30 and the cost will be $3.00. Mary-Martha Circle welcomes new members and first time visitors. Janece Hudson is a very interesting speaker and it will be a good time to attend our meeting.

A new order will be sent for Rada Cutlery and other Rada products on Monday, March 25th. If you wish to place an order, call Margaret Jones, 892-2048 or email [email protected]. Your items should be returned by April 1 at the latest. If you would like to see a catalog, please call and have one placed in

your name tag folder. Or, you can go to the church web site at http://www.oakhillumc.org/grouplist.html#women and click on the Rada link – you will see the catalog in its entirety. Don’t forget that all of these sales benefit the UMW mission work, and they are very much appreciated by the OHUMW.

Young at Heart

Young at Heart Monthly Gathering

On March 14th at 6:30 p.m., we will have our monthly gathering at B.J.’s restaurant,

located at 5207 Brodie Lane in Sunset Valley. It is on the southeast corner of Brodie Lane and east-bound US 290 frontage road. Come join all your friends for good food, fun and fellowship. As always, please feel free to bring a friend and a good joke to share.

ARE YOU A STORYTELLER?On Thursday night, March 21, we are going to read the greatest story ever told; the story of Jesus. We will meet in the coffeehouse at 7 and read the entire Gospel of Mark aloud. This unique Lenten observance will allow us to hear the story as it would have been heard in the first century. Pastor Stella is looking for people who enjoy reading aloud, as well as a greeter and someone to help with coffee. Please contact her at [email protected].

Confirmation Youth Mission NEEDS YOUR HELP

Please help the youth Confirmation class gather food for the hungry during Lent (now until the end of March). We will be gathering canned goods, cereals, rices, beans, and peanut butter. There will be a box in the Fellowship Hall and a box in the Sanctuary Narthex for your donations. Consider walking your neighborhood, wearing your “the church has left the building” t-shirt, and asking for them to help as well. Also, did you know that each Communion Sunday there are always baskets on the front row of each section of the sanctuary pews for food donations to help West Rural Community Center or those who walk in our doors asking for assistance?

The Haiti team is heading out on April 6th....If anyone would like to help, the team would like to take the following with them: • Tarps (the platic kind...not canvas)• Soccer Balls• Double Length Jump Ropes• Games• Nutritious Snack Items• Health Kits (see below)Donation boxes will be in the Narthex, Coffee Lounge, adult ed build-ing and the office foyer through Easter Day. Health Kit ContentsThey are very specific about what should go into the health kits:• 1 hand towel 15” x 25” to 17”x 27” (kitchen cleaning and microfiber towels are not acceptable) • 1 washcloth • 1 comb, needs to be sturdy, no pocket combs or picks please, rattail combs and combs without handles are acceptable • 1 metal nail file or clipper, no emery boards please • 1 bath size soap • 3 oz. and larger sizes only all brands are acceptable, do not remove from original packaging • 1 toothbrush, adult size only, do not remove from original packaging • 6 adhesive bandages • ¾” to 1” size common household band aids • 1 plastic bag one gallon size, sealable bags only • 1 Small tube of toothpaste...make sure the expiration date has not passed.

Assembly DirectionsLay out the hand towel flat on a table. Lay the washcloth flat in the center of the hand towel. Place all remaining items on top of the wash cloth. Fold over the sides of the hand towel to cover all of the items. Fold over one end of the hand towel so that it covers all of the items. Grasp the bundle of items tightly and roll over the remainder of the hand towel tightly. Place the tightly rolled bundle in the plastic bag. Remove as much air as possible and seal the bag.

Important Notes• All items must be new.• Do not wash any of the items as they will be considered used.• All emergency kits are carefully planned to make them usable in the greatest number of situations. Since strict rules often govern product entry into international countries, it is important that kits contain only the requested items – nothing more.• DO NOT include any personal notes, money or additional material in the kits.• It would be great if the kits could be put together, however if you have an abundance of soap or toothbrushes or bandaids, etc….the team will supplement and assemble the kits themselves.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The Methodist Habitat for Humanity build starts on March 16th. The build is scheduled to be completed on May 18th. We have the following workdays available with the listed number of workers we need to provide: March 16 – ten workers; April 13 – five work-ers; May 11 – five workers. We have only raised about $2,500 towards our goal of $10,000. Please consider donating additional funds. You can do this by placing a donation in the offering plate during Sunday services. Make checks out to “OHUMC” with “Habitat for Humanity” in the memo line or place cash in an offering envelope and label it “Habitat for Humanity.” Call Jerry Morford at 301-3738 or send him an e-mail at [email protected] if you have questions or would like to help with the pancake breakfast.

Pancake Breakfast and Total Fundraising for the2013 Methodist Habitat for Humanity Build

Our pancake breakfast on March 2 at Applebee’s on Hwy 290 was a great success! We sold a total of 145 tickets and made $142 in tips. We made $1,100 after paying Applebee’s their share for the food. Our total fundraising from selling square feet on a Habitat house plan last fall and the Gifts of Caring at Christmas totals right at $5,000. Our goal this year was $10,000 but this is still really great! The build is scheduled to begin on March 16 and our three workdays are full with our allotted number of volunteers. We will also be providing lunches for two workdays at the site. The house will be completed in May. We are building the house for Odalys Sanchez-Orta and her two children (Hersey, who is 11 years old and Yemicel, who is 20 years old); see photo. They waited several years before being accepted by the Cuban immigration program to come to the United States. Odalys says, “In Cuba we lived hand-to-mouth, our wages were the very bare minimum, but we had to learn to adjust.” About the apartment they live in now, “There are severe maintenance problems and nothing feels like ours, the apartment welive in has been lived in by so many other people.” The family is thrilled to be accepted by Habitat for Humanity and is anxious to help build their house. Please consider donating additional funds to reach our goal of $10,000. You can do this by placing a donation in the offering plate during Sunday services. Make checks out to “OHUMC” with “Habitat for Humanity” in the memo line or place cash in an offering envelope and label it “Habitat for Humanity.” We also need your continued prayers for the success of the Methodist Build.
