The conTexT Gram Laximi is a innovative collective efort of the Government of Gujarat through which the concept of recycling of waste for generating revenue by the community is been demonstrated The convergence of schemes and community participation is the key factor of the programme It is a creative efort for holistic development of the rural as all the segments of the society are benefted

Through Gram Laximi the Government has brought a new light where the community started thinking of livelihood practices diferently Earlier the vermi compost has been identifed as best practices in agriculture and it could be seen as successful practices among the large farmers only But now due to Gram Laximi a revenue generating model of vermi compost the stigma of less productivity in the crops is vanished The small and marginal farmers involved in production of Gram Laximi are using the compost on regular basis in the crops like castor cotton amp ground nuts and due to high productivity in the yields they are proclaiming their testimonies to the other farmers about the good results

GRAM LAXIMI ldquoReaping Wealth from Wasterdquo

Gujarat is one of the most prosperous states of India owing to its development in agricultural productivity and industrialization Agriculture forms a major part of the statersquos economy It not only provides food grains to the people but also provides raw materials for agro-based industries Unfavorable climatic conditions and soil factors in some areas are major concerns for better yield

The various cash crops grown in the state include Groundnut Cotton Tobacco (second highest production in the country) Isabgul Cumin Sugarcane Jawar Bajra Rice Wheat Pulses Tur and Gram Recently the farmers of Gujarat have started producing bananas and mangoes in large scale

Other products include honey wax and bamboo which are produced in fair quantities in diferent forests The state also produces medicinal herbs and fruits like Jamun and Guava Forests also yield considerable quantities of Teak Khair Sadad Hadariyo manual bamboos and other good quality of wood The rural economy of Gujarat depends a lot upon animal husbandry and dairying

Sabarkantha district is located in the north zone of Gujarat with 7390 sqkm land area Out of total 736 lac hectares of land area in the district 444 lacs hectares (6032 of total available land) is under cultivation It has fertile as well as hilly-rocky land Nearly 89 population of the


district resides in rural areas and earns their living through agriculture and other peripheral sectors like animal husbandry and dairying

Due to lack of segregation practice amongst the people the valuable and degradable organic waste as well as recyclable wastes is discarded along with non-organic toxic waste such waste is piled up near by areas to the residential colonies commercial complex or public institutions With no proper collection mechanism these hips of garbage greatly pollute the surrounding inviting growth of harmful insects bacteria and other micro-organism that afect human health

It is expected and assumed that rural village household owning cattle will adopt the technique as a regular day to day animal husbandry agriculture practices It is very much evident from the statistics there is a lot of scope in generating demand of organic recycled manure through awareness and behavior change in agriculture animal husbandry practices

objecTiVes bull Involvement of small and marginal farmers in the proper non interrupted growth in both the agriculture amp dairy sectors bull Value added manure with high marketability locally and outstation bull Timely generated revenue out of the heaps of garbage by value addition resulting into clean village and less medical expenses bull Reduction in crop amp animal disease bull Improved land quality and further improved farm production bull Reduction in the cost of production less usage of artificial manure while switching over to usage of organic compost

VermicomposT Organic matter recycling has been in use in India for centuries In 19th and 20th century scientifc methods for converting low value organic matter into high value organic composts were developed The activities of earthworms for recycling of organic matter became the focus of attention by scientifc community in mid-1990s

Initially vermiculture ie use of surface living earthworms was carried out at a very small scale-mainly for management of kitchen wastes Gradually the technique is been used in diferent models and diferent setups for recycling the organic wastes on a larger scale at individual and community level

VERmICOmPOST physicaL QuaLiTy parameTers Vermicompost is a dark brownblack humus like coarse material soft in feel and free from any foul smell live weed seeds and other contaminations

bull mucus type substance coated on each particle that increases aeration in the soil provides excellent water retention properties and improves the drainage in heavy soils

bull Contains sufficient moisture (25-35) at the time of packing to ensure high level of biological activities

bull Vermicast is one of the best forms of organic manure and is practically 100 percent like humus

Gram Laximi- an iniTiaTiVe by sabarkanTha DisT aDmn In order to ensure the objectives DRDA (District Rural Development Agency) Sabarkantha had initiated a Project name ldquoGRAM LAXMIrdquo ( Community Worm Compost Unit) The wormy composting strategy is been used by the agency to recycle all the agriculture and animal husbandry waste into nutritional organic fertilizer

broaDer expecTaTion from The projecT The average smallest village consists of 300 house hold with the holding of 300 to 500 cattle It is expected that the village having the GRAM LAXIMI UNIT having 40 beds will produce 262800 kg of wormy compost during the year

The projecT a inputs - model 1 bull Each Gram Laxmi unit is on Gauchar Public land measuring 360 Square metre (12x30) bull The unit has 40 beds for vermi composting measuring 5x1x075=375cubic meters bull 1beds contain 600 kg of pest material such as cow dung agriculture waste village waste etc bull In each bed 20 kg of worms costing approx 2500 Rs ( Rs 125kg) (It is a onetime cost the worms gets multiplied and doubled in one cycle) bull Additional accessories for the unit management like plough strainer glass etc it is a onetime cost expected to be incurred in the beginning of the project

b outcomes - model 1 bull At the completion of one cycle the total production is of 24 tones of wormy composting ( 600 kg x 40 beds= 24000 kg compost) bull The cost of compost is Rs 24000 kg Rs 5 = Rs 120000-bull Worms produced 20 kg x 40 beds = 800 kg Rs 125 kg = Rs 100000-

As per the project the SHGs are managing GRAM LAXIMI and due to which the sustainability of the programme optimum utilization of the village resources such as water and waste resulting into reduction of input cost and maximizing output is ensured

In some cases viewing at the available resources like availability of land number of cattle in the village the smaller Unit of Gram Laxmi model with 20 beds had been introduced

a inputs-model 2 bull Each Gram Laxmi unit is on Gauchar Public land measuring 180 Square metre (6x15) bull The unit has 20 beds for vermi composting measuring 5x1x075=375cubic meters

Learning for the better development of the programme

The production cycle increased from estimated 45 days to 60 days and in some cases it increased to 90 days

o Less awareness among the community for small activities like sprinkling of water timely turning of compost upside down to speed up the process of production

o The package of practices given to the members required more close monitoring and identifcation of training needs accordingly for the community

o The production of worms could not be calculated due to various reasons like dying of worms and methodology not properly adopted for weighing of worms at the end of the cycle the weighing of worms done only at the time of selling of works

o Less sensitivity towards practicing the package of practices in production during the frst cycle resulting into to breakage of cycle increased cycle period

benchmark - 1 REVENUE GENERATION Since inception of the project the total of 339000 kg of vermin compost and 1150 kg of vermin had been sold by the members of the SHGs During the year the SHGs has earned about Rs 1185900 from selling of vermin and compost The total production of compost recorded during the year is 1792000 kg worth a value of Rs 5376000 Rs 3kg

The members of the SHGs were involved in household work Due to social conservative community barrier because of being from a Rajput community the women never came out of their houses Due to social mobilisation by mission mangalam team the women came along in a Sakhi Mandal and later on got involved in production of vermi compost through Gram Laxmi community vermi compost unit The Sakhi Mandal has sold the vermi compost amount of Rs 327000- The members of the SHG got social acceptance for their good work The activity of the women has been welcomed as a sign of prosperity by the man folk of the Rajput community in the village
