From Fr Brian
I will be on health leave from the parishes begin-
ning January 24 for medical treatment at Beth Is-
rael Hospital. I have been diagnosed with a bone
marrow disease called amyloidosis which causes
proteins to settle in areas of the body which left
untreated could lead to organ damage and fail-
ure. My team of doctors has recommended an
autologous stem cell transplant along with chem-
otherapy which I have agreed to. The transplant
will take place on January 28 and then I will re-
main under their care for about two weeks fol-
lowed by rest and rehabilitation at my family
home in Quincy. There is no definitive time
frame but my intention is to remain as pastor and
return to the collaborative once cleared by the
doctors. Father Bob Connors has graciously
offered to coordinate coverage and operations of
the parishes during this time. I am grateful for
his friendship and support during this challeng-
ing time in my life. Please pray for me and those
who will be caring for me in the coming weeks.
Beginning on February 7th and continuing until
Fr. Brian returns from his health leave, there
will be no Mass and no Funerals on Fridays at
either St. Ann’s or St. Brendan’s. Thank you for
your understanding.

Many people have given bequests over the years to
our parish collaborative and we are grateful for
their generosity. Gifts and bequests are a line item
in our parish budgets and as the fiscal year comes
to a close some have inquired about the logistics of
giving a large or small gift as part of your estate
planning. If you would like more information
about how this can be done in loving memory of
anyone in your life please contact our finance man-
ager Nancy Lafoe or any member of our finance
councils.
A popular television commercial not only highlights
people helping someone, but how others who witness
their kindness are inspired to do the same. As one
person helps another, still others spread the kind acts
that have a ripple effect of touching many lives and
changing social standards and concerns.
Good deeds are an example of how we put into action
our belief that everyone is made in the image and
likeness of God. We recognize in them the Divine im-
print of the Creator who brands each of us with an
indelible mark of dignity and destiny. So it is no sur-
prise that John should recognize Jesus as the chosen
One, the Anointed, the Messiah. He sees with the eyes
of faith the mark that sets Jesus apart and he an-
nounces it to all who would listen.
Our life of faith includes not only bold acts of kind-
ness, but also the bold announcement that Jesus is
present among us as Lord and Messiah. We cannot
hide our faith, nor deny we have it. Our words and
deeds must both proclaim our faith and hope that
Jesus is Lord.

Perfect Offering—By Dr. Scott Hahn
Jesus speaks through the prophet Isaiah in today's
First Reading.
He tells us of the mission given to Him by the Father
from the womb: "'You are My servant,' He said to
Me."
Servant and Son, our Lord was sent to lead a new ex-
odus - to raise up the exiled tribes of Israel, to gather
and restore them to God. More than that, He was to
be a light to the nations, that God's salvation may
reach to the ends of the earth (see Acts 13:46-47).
Before the first exodus, a lamb was offered in sacrifice
and its blood painted on the Israelites' door posts. The
blood of the lamb identified their homes and the Lord
"passed over" these in executing judgment on the
Egyptians (see Exodus 12:1-23,27).
In the new exodus, Jesus is the "Lamb of God," as
John beholds Him in the Gospel today (see 1 Corin-
thians 5:7; 1 Peter 1:18-19). Our Lord sings of this in
today's Psalm. He has come, He says, to offer His
body to do the will of God (see Hebrews 10:3-13).
The sacrifices, oblations, holocausts, and sin-offerings
given after the first exodus had no power to take
away sins (see Hebrews 10:4). They were meant not to
save but to teach (see Galatians 3:24). In offering these
sacrifices, the people were to learn self-sacrifice - that
they were made for worship, to offer themselves
freely to God and to delight in His will.
Only Jesus could make that perfect offering of him-
self. And through His sacrifice, He has given us ears
open to obedience, made it possible for us to hear the
Father's call to holiness, as Paul says in today's Epis-
tle.
He has made us children of God, baptized in the
blood of the Lamb (see Revelation 7:14). And we are
to join our sacrifice to His, to offer our bodies - our
lives - as living sacrifices in the spiritual worship of
the Mass (see Romans 12:1).
