THE FINANCIAL REALITY

It goes without saying (perhaps you are facing

the reality yourselves) that to go six weeks with-

out any collections raises a critical challenge for

our two parishes. The Archdiocese is allowing

us to borrow money for salaries, etc., but we still

have operating expenses that come in and paying

them is being postponed, but only for so long.

We will be borrowing money for payroll and that

means added debt to our already outstanding

high debt. We are receiving some income from

online giving and drop offs at the office. I can’t

emphasize enough how critical your continued

contribution is. What I want to ask is that every-

one consider seriously giving to the parish. Per-

haps you could drop it off in the envelope slot at

the office, perhaps you could send in a dona-

tion . After six weeks of no regular income, we

know that normal life will not jump back to “the

way it was” into May. This is going to be a long-

term recovery and both parishes are going to

need your extra support. So many people are in

dire straights financially and we totally under-

stand because – so are we! We can empathize

with those who are, and we outreach to those

who can continue to support us. Please consider

this opportunity below to help us.

Fr Brian and Fr. Bob

90-DAYS NOW – FOR YOUR PARISH

This special initiative asks, if possible, for parish-

ioners to rally around their parish by making a

special daily offertory commitment for the next

90 days. This effort is intended

to supplement weekly offertory gifts, given the

challenges of the current crisis. Should you

choose to join in this effort, the Archdiocese has

created an easy-to-use link to donate.

COLLABORATIVE NOTES

1. Fr. Brian is out of the hospital and continuing

his recovery as well. Please continue your day-a-

prayer for Fr. Brian. He is most grateful.

2. Confession is by appointment. Please call the

office and leave a message. The Voice Mail is re-

trieved each day and we will be in touch with

you.

3. My prayer is for you and your family. For

those affected by the virus and its consequences,

we continue to pray for you all. Please pray for

us and God bless you and your families.

Stay well and stay put.

4. First Communion is postponed in both parish-

es. In consultation with Fr Brian, we are reticent

to set any dates for First Communion until the

state is “free” and we can set a date that will

work. We don’t want to keep changing dates, so

we ask your patience and understanding in these

unique times. The student “sign up” sheets at

this point will be suspended for the year in all

grades. As soon as we can do so with some cer-

tainty, we will inform you of a date for First

Communion. Given overlapping schedules etc.,

we may have to adjust the celebrations as

well. Right now we are in unchartered territory

and trying our best to move forward. We will

keep the community informed.

Third Sunday of Easter April 26, 2020

Emmaus and Us

By Dr. Scott Hahn

We should put ourselves in the shoes of the disciples in

today's Gospel. Downcast and confused they're making

their way down the road, unable to understand all the

things that have occurred.

They know what they've seen - a prophet mighty in word

and deed. They know what they were hoping for - that He

would be the redeemer of Israel. But they don't know

what to make of His violent death at the hands of their

rulers.

They can't even recognize Jesus as He draws near to walk

with them. He seems like just another foreigner visiting

Jerusalem for the Passover.

Note that Jesus doesn't disclose His identity until they de-

scribe how they found His tomb empty but "Him they did

not see." That's how it is with us, too. Unless He revealed

himself we would see only an empty tomb and a meaning-

less death.

How does Jesus make himself known at Emmaus? First,

He interprets "all the Scriptures" as referring to Him. In

today's First Reading and Epistle, Peter also opens the

Scriptures to proclaim the meaning of Christ's death ac-

cording to the Father's "set plan" - foreknown before the

foundation of the world.

Jesus is described as a new Moses and a new Passover

lamb. He is the One of whom David sang in today's Psalm

- whose soul was not abandoned to corruption but was

shown the path of life.

After opening the Scriptures, Jesus at table took bread,

blessed it, broke it, and gave it to the disciples - exactly

what He did at the Last Supper (see Luke 22:14-20).

In every Eucharist, we reenact that Easter Sunday at Em-

maus. Jesus reveals himself to us in our journey. He

speaks to our hearts in the Scriptures. Then at the table of

the altar, in the person of the priest, He breaks the bread.

The disciples begged him, "Stay with us." So He does.

Though He has vanished from our sight, in the Eucharist -

as at Emmaus - we know Him in the breaking of the

bread.

Saint of the Week

Saint Pedro de San José Betancur

(March 19, 1626 – April 25, 1667)

Central America claimed its first saint with the canoni-

zation of Pedro de San José Betancur. Known as the

“Saint Francis of the Americas,” Pedro de Betancur is

the first saint to have worked and died in Guatemala.

Pedro very much wanted to become a priest, but God

had other plans for the young man born into a poor

family on Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Pedro was a

shepherd until age 24, when he began to make his way

to Guatemala, hoping to connect with a relative en-

gaged in government service there. By the time he

reached Havana, he was out of money. After working

there to earn more, he got to Guatemala City the fol-

lowing year. When he arrived, he was so destitute that

he joined the breadline that the Franciscans had estab-

lished.

Soon, Pedro enrolled in the local Jesuit college in hopes

of studying for the priesthood. No matter how hard he

tried, however, he could not master the material; he

withdrew from school. In 1655, he joined the Secular

Franciscan Order. Three years later, he opened a hospi-

tal for the convalescent poor; a shelter for the homeless,

and a school for the poor soon followed. Not wanting

to neglect the rich of Guatemala City, Pedro began

walking through their part of town ringing a bell and

inviting them to repent.

Other men came to share in Pedro’s work. Out of this

group came the Bethlehemite Congregation, which

won papal approval after Pedro’s death. A Bethle-

hemite sisters’ community, similarly founded after

Pedro’s death, was inspired by his life of prayer and

compassion.

He is sometimes credited with originating the Christ-

mas Eve posadas procession in which people represent-

ing Mary and Joseph seek a night’s lodging from their

neighbors. The custom soon spread to Mexico and oth-

er Central American countries.

Pedro died in 1667, and was canonized by Pope John

Paul II in Guatemala City on July 30, 2002.
