PHASE I PAINTING HAS STARTED

At press time despite rain, a good start had been made toward the completion of painting the 24 buildings in Phase I before November. Units from 200-235 Cana Circle and all of Loyola Drive are included in year one of the five-year paint rotation plan.

The process has several steps. The contractor first washes down all wood trim and the aluminum siding with a mild bleach solution. The patio is pressure washed. Next the unit is checked for rotten wood which is replaced. Then painting begins including the trim, doors and for the first time, shutters, if needed.

Erica is notifying residents just prior to the arrival of the crew so breakable belongings can be removed from the patio area and patio gates can be unlocked. CertaPro can assist with removing patio furniture. All shrubbery should have been trimmed prior to arrival of the crew.

Work is checked all through the process by property management and Board representatives.

If you have questions, call Erica at 615-600-4913.

SWIMMING POOL END OF SEASON

The swimming pool will definitely be open through September 30th, but it will also stay open into October as long as daytime temperatures are consistently above 75 degrees.

The Water Aerobics Class will meet MWF’s through September when outside temperature is 75 degrees or higher, but the last class day is September 29th.

CENTERING PRAYER RESUMES

Centering Prayer will resume on Wednesday, September 6th, at 1:15 pm in the Clubhouse Chapel.

For those unfamiliar with the term Centering Prayer, it is a way to “be still” in mind, body, and spirit in order to connect with our Creator. This few minutes of quiet reflection enables one to be able to get a new perspective on present life situations.

It can be a time to clarify our vision and gain new insights. All residents are invited.

The Chapel is at the end of the right hallway off the lobby. --Martha Likins, 615-310-4978

While Dixie Frederiksen is traipsing around Ireland, chasing snakes with shillelagh in hand, Alice Schwartz led the discussion of our August meeting. (We forgot to tell Dixie that St. Patrick took care of the snakes centuries ago.)

Our recommended book for the month was either BLOODROOT or LONGMAN. Both were reviewed enthusiastically. If you’re interested in some good, and worthwhile reading, either of these is excellent, as well as our September book. The styles and descriptive abilities of both authors are outstanding.

Our selection for September is ALL OVER BUT THE SHOUTIN’ by Rick Bragg, Pulitzer Prize winner and southern “boy.” This book has been around for several years, but it’s one of the best. If you read the book years ago, it is well worth reading again. Bragg’s ability to capture one’s heart, interspersed with subtle bits of humor, is memorable.

Our next meeting is September 21st at 11 am. All are welcome. Come and enjoy amusing and interesting conversation. --Betty Moth

GRIEFSHARE SESSIONS RESUME TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 5th

GriefShare meetings are designed for people in grief after the loss of a loved one. The program involves a weekly video and discussion. The group offers comfort to all who attend. The friendships that develop often last a lifetime.

The group will meet in the Clubhouse Tuesday, September 5th, 10 am to noon, through December 5th. For Thanksgiving week the meeting will be on Monday, November 20th. This meeting, called “Surviving the Holidays,” is a very special meeting to prepare for both Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I invite anyone interested to attend. If you have questions, please contact me at 281-723-4428 or by email at [email protected].

NEW BIRD FEEDER POLICY STARTING SEPTEMBER 1st, the COA Board will begin enforcing a new seed-type bird feeder policy.

On page 30 of the new Homeowners’ Manual, residents are informed that bird feeders are allowed in the Cloister, but that the Board is now limiting each unit to just ONE seed-type bird feeder.

Multiple hummingbird feeders are allowed.

This rule is being put in place to help control the rodent and other wildlife infestations. Both chipmunks and skunks have been a problem during 2017.

Owner will receive a warning letter if multiple seed-type feeders continue to be used. After 30 days, if extra feeders are not removed, there is an escalating fine starting at $25 and increasing up to $100.

2017 HOMEOWNERS’ MANUAL DISTRIBUTED

The COA Board approved the revised Homeowners’ Manual at last month’s meeting, and copies were delivered to all residents during August. Those with email received an electronic copy which can also be found on the Cloister and CMA websites.

If you were out of town and missed receiving your copy, please see Erica at the Clubhouse MWF between 9 am and 5 pm to get your printed copy.

BUON GIORNO!

ITALIAN NIGHT FOR COVERED DISH SEPTEMBER 12th

Remember new residents who have moved into the Cloister during 2017 and have not taken advantage of their free meal yet are invited to have a meal on us during September, October, and November. The registration ladies have a list of all new residents so come on even if you haven’t received an actual ticket from your Good Neighbor representative.

The rest of us will pay our $4 per and no doubt eat way too much as we try all the delicious dishes prepared by the good cooks of the Cloister.

National Gold Star Mother’s Day, also known as

National Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day, is

observed annually on the last Sunday in

September, this year on September 24th

.

National Gold Star Mother’s Day was created in

1928 to recognize and honor those that have lost a

son or daughter while serving our country in the

United States Armed Forces.

A gold star symbolizes a family member who died

in the line of duty while serving the United States

Armed Forces.

“Gold Star mothers and families know the

immeasurable cost of fighting for the ideals we

believe in, and they know the pride that comes with

exemplary service to America.” ~ President Barack

Obama ~ September 23, 2011 ~ Presidential Proclamation to expand honor to families.

Our friend, Sophia Keller, 401 Siena Drive, is a Gold

Star Mother. Her son, Kenneth Keller, Jr., a Marine,

was killed in the Persian Gulf in 1990. He was 26

years old, married with a son. He and 7 other Marines were never found.
