THE ORDER OF MASS

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

All Amen.

The Lord be with you.All And with thy spirit.

All Almighty God, unto whom all hearts be open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Our Lord Jesus Christ said: Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord; and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. This is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

All Lord have mercy upon us, and write all these Thy laws in our hearts, we beseech Thee.

¶Old Testament Lesson

And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. And the Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat. And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life. And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

Genesis 3 v. 9-19

This is the Word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God.

¶Gradual Psalm

Hold not thy tongue, O God, keep not still silence : refrain not thyself O_God.For lo thine enemies make a murmuring : and they that hate thee have lift up their head.O my God make them like unto a wheel : and as the stubble before_the_wind.Like as the fire that burneth up the wood : and as the flame that consumeth the mountains.Persecute them even so with thy tempest : and make them afraid with thy storm.Make their faces ashamed O Lord : that they may seek thy_Name.

Let them be confounded and vexed ever more and more : let them be put to shäme and perish. And they shall know that thou whose Name is Jehovah : art only the most Highest over all the_earth.

Psalm 83 v. 1-2, 13-end

¶New Testament Lesson

Ye suffer fools gladly, seeing ye yourselves are wise.  For ye suffer if a man bring you into bondage, if a man devour you, if a man take of you, if a man exalt himself, if a man smite you on the face.  I speak as concerning reproach, as though we had been weak: howbeit, whereinsoever any is bold, (I speak foolishly,) I am bold also.  Are they Hebrews? so am I.  Are they Israelites? so am I.  Are they the seed of Abraham? so am I.  Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as a fool,) I am more: in labours more abundant; in stripes above measure; in prisons more frequent; in deaths oft.  Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one; thrice was I beaten with rods; once was I stoned; thrice I suffered shipwreck; a night and a day I have been in the deep; in journeyings often; in perils of waters; in perils of robbers; in perils by mine own countrymen; in perils by the heathen; in perils in the city; in perils in the wilderness; in perils in the sea; in perils among false brethren; in weariness and painfulness; in watchings often; in hunger and thirst; in fastings often; in cold and nakedness; besides those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches.  Who is weak, and I am not weak? who is offended, and I burn not?  If I must needs glory, I will glory of the things which concern mine infirmities.  The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which is blessed for evermore, knoweth that I lie not.

2 Corinthians 11 v. 19-31

This is the Word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God.

¶GradualLet the nations know that thou, whose name is Jehovah art only the Most Highest over all the earth. O my God, make them like unto a wheel: and as the stubble before the wind.

¶Gospel Acclamation

O my God, make them like unto a wheel :and as the stubble before the wind.

¶The Gospel The Lord be with you:

All And with thy spirit.A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke:

All Glory be to thee, O Lord.

When much people were gathered together, and were come to him out of every city, he spake by a parable: A sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell by the way-side, and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it.  And some fell upon a rock, and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture. And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it.  And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold.  And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.  And his disciples asked him, saying, What might this parable be?  And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they

Praise to you O Christ: King of e - ter - nal Glo-ry.

might not see, and hearing they might not understand.  Now the parable is this: The seed is the Word of God.  Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe, and be saved.  They on the rock are they which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away.  And that which fell among thorns are they which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares, and riches, and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.  But that on the good ground are they which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.

Luke 8 v. 4-15

This is the Gospel of the Lord. All Praise be to thee, O Christ.

¶Intercessions

The Sub-deacon leads the congregation in the intercessions for the Church and the world. The response to each bidding is Hear our prayer.

¶ConfessionThe Celebrant invites the people to confess their sins, kneeling:

Ye who do truly and earnestly repent you of your sins, and are in love and charity with your neighbours, and intend to lead a new life, following the commandments of God, and walking from henceforth in his holy ways; Draw near with faith, and take this holy Sacrament to your comfort; and make your humble confession to Almighty God, meekly kneeling upon your knees.

All Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all men: we acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we, from time to time, most grievously have committed, by thought, word and deed, against thy divine majesty, provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us; the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honour and glory of thy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Celebrant pronounces the Absolution

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him; Have mercy upon you; pardon and deliver you from all your sins; confirm and strengthen you in all

goodness; and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. All Amen.

¶Post-Communion Prayer – Please Stand

O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy humble servants entirely desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; most humbly beseeching thee to grant, that by the merits and death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in his blood, we and all thy whole Church may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion. And here we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies, to be a reasonable, holy, and lively sacrifice unto thee; humbly beseeching thee, that all we, who are partakers of this holy communion, may be fulfilled with thy grace and heavenly benediction. And although we be unworthy, through our manifold sins, to offer unto thee any sacrifice, yet we beseech thee to accept this our bounden duty and service; not weighing our merits, but pardoning our offences, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father almighty, world without end.

All Amen.

All Almighty God, we thank thee for feeding us with the body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ. Through him we offer thee our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Send us out in the power of thy Spirit to live and work to thy praise and glory. Amen.

A ten-minute pause for prayer and reflections take place in the chapel at noon during the week. Evensong is sung at 5.30pm, Monday to Friday (with Benediction on Friday). All are warmly invited to worship with us.

Tongues of Angels? Conformed to Christ by Liturgy, Monday 6:00 in the Ursell Room. As we begin the slow turn toward Lent, the Monday evening discussion group will consider how the symbolic meaning of the mass which Fr Mark has discussed over the last number of weeks becomes real and practical for us.. The topic for this week will be Joy:  The destination of our Christian pilgrimage and its present reality. Each week we will look at  stained glass, mosaics, and other works of art to illustrate the theme.

Anglican history research seminar: Dr Andrew Chandler from the University of Chichester will give our second research seminar of the term. His paper is called: ‘George Bell, Bishop of Chichester: Anglicanism, Ecumenism and Christian Internationalism in an Age of Crisis, 1925-1948’. The seminar will take place this Thursday (28 February) in the Ursell Room at 4pm with tea and coffee in the Hood Room from 3.45pm.Anglican Ecclesiology and the Ordination of Women as Priests: The Principal and Chaplain have invited Dr Colin Podmore, the Director of Forward in Faith, to speak about 'Anglican Ecclesiology and the Ordination of Women as Priests' on Monday of 8th Week, 4 March, from 6 to 7:15 pm in the Ursell Room.

Not surprisingly we often receive questions about the subject of the ordination of women, and requests for an explanation for a 'traditional' point of view, particularly from those in our own community who do not hold such a view. Why is it that some in the Church of England feel unable to receive the ministry of women as bishops and priests in the C of E, or to

treat that ministry as the same or interchangeable with that exercised by men ordained as priests? Dr Podmore’s talk will provide something of an answer to this question, which he will root in a more general discussion about Anglican Ecclesiology, about the life and order of the Church.

For some this is a difficult, perplexing, and even painful topic. At the same time, the Church of England has made provision for those who come to different conclusions on this subject to live together in the same Church, and has used the language of 'mutual flourishing' to describe this common life. It is a feature of our life together here that such flourishing is really pursued.

Our community holds together many different standpoints and trajectories, but whatever your views on the subject, we hope that you will participate in the discussion with the kind of charity and mutual respect that makes fruitful discussion possible.

The Weekly G&T&Tea: Come and join us to round off the week over a G&T, or tea, or two, from 6.15pm on Fridays throughout the term in the Hood Room.

Compline by Candlelight: Compline is a quiet reflective service for the ending of the day. Do join us at 9:30pm on Tuesday.

Common Good: If you are interested in volunteering in any capacity during this academic year, do take a Common Good Directory, which will list all the current opportunities for doing so. We meet twice a term to discuss any projects we might be involved in, eat and pray together, the next meeting being Monday of 9th Week, 11 March, at 6.15pm. All most welcome…

Confession and Spiritual Direction is a regular and important part of the ministry of the house, and if you are thinking about either please have a word with one of the Clergy. The Chapter are available to hear confessions by appointment.

Baptism and Confirmation: If you would like to make enquiries about baptism or confirmation, or preparation to receive communion, please contact one of the clergy.

The Bible readings

which we use each day are printed above. You can follow these readings at home by choosing one or two each day, perhaps following one of the three paths (Gospel, New Testament letter, or the Old Testament). It's helpful if you choose a pattern that you can follow rather than setting a rule which does not work for you. Study Bibles, in the form of Apps or books, offer help with difficult passages.
