We are going to shake things up a little. We would love to see everyone bring an item for the Marion-Polk Food Share bins.

This Service Sunday we will be asking everyone who has not gone through the “Abuse Risk Reduction Training” to go to the Fellowship Hall and attend this necessary training. We live in an ever-changing world and we want everyone in our church family to have the tools necessary to reduce the risk of abuse and to protect themselves. The training consists of a video and paperwork to complete.

If you have completed the training, we have projects for you: Family Building Blocks Quilt Tying

There will be activities for all the children as well.

Lunch will be served after the training and projects have been completed. You will not want to miss this important Service Sunday!

Bread of Life Cafe 9:00 am, Fellowship Hall

Free coffee and continental breakfast for all who come. Inter-generational video and discussion on prayer, relevant in today’s world. Youth Participation is encouraged and welcomed. Childcare for ages 6 and under is available.

Bites of Bread from Bob In my day, almost everyone took a typing class. My class was the first year that they had the IBM Selec-tric typewriter. That was quite a jump in technology from the manual typewriter on which I had to practice at home. Now a days, kids grow up using keyboards and it is almost second nature. If keyboards were in-vented today, they may very well have a different layout of keys. The common keyboard layout is called QWERTY. These are the first six letters on the second row of the typewriter. Did you know that this arrangement of keys was designed to slow typists down?

In the mid-1800’s, inventor Latham Scholes put to-gether a working model of the typewriter. It was awkward and heavy and the keys would jam if the typist went too fast. So Scholes designed a keyboard that separated frequently used letters and letter com-binations. This arrangement, known as QWERTY, reduced typing speed and kept keys from jamming.

Sometimes life moves too fast. Our lives, like the typewriter, can be jammed up by hasty actions and too-full calendars. We need moments of quiet and calm. Jesus often went off by himself for prayer and meditation. I hope that our worship times, prayer times and Bible study times help provide some space in your life for rest and renewal. One of the purposes of Lent is to slow down and take a personal inventory of our busy lives.

Maundy Thursday Service April 2 - 7:30 pm, Sanctuary We will celebrate the Lord’s Supper portrayal as we remember Christ’s last meal with his disciples and his passion and death on the cross.

Good Friday Service April 3 - 12:00 pm, Chapel This will be a brief service of reflection in remem-brance of the sacrifice of Christ on the cross on our behalf.

OK-to-Awesome Event Brought to you by the Welcoming Ministry Team Sunday, April 12

Pressing the flesh, mingling, face to face. . . whatever you call it, it is an essential ingredient in the Church’s success. This event will lay out the rationale and strategies for mingling with the people who are inside and outside of the church. This skill set makes the difference between the church being OK and Awe-some.

You will want to attend this dynamic event. Stay after the 11:00 am worship service, enjoy lunch and then the event will begin.

This is a great opportunity for our young adults to care for and learn from others in community service internships while they explore their faith, leadership and personal spiritual practices.

Condolences Virginia Hill passed away March 17. Our prayers and sympathies go out to her family at this time.

Virginia’s memorial service will be held on Wednes-day, March 25, at 2:00 pm, at Rest Lawn Memorial Chapel.

Children and Youth A Little Light from Laurie Recently I read a story about a man whose job was suddenly jeopardized when a computer malfunction occurred during an important software transaction. His son walked into the room to find his worried dad pacing the room. He asked what was wrong. Instead of irritably putting the son off or shooing him away to deal with the situation on his own, he sat down, ex-plained the situation, then asked his son to pray for him. As the son laid his hand on his dad and prayed, scriptures began to form in his head. After looking up the scriptures together and praying again, the fa-ther felt a huge relief come over him. The circum-stance didn’t immediately change, except he no longer felt the weight of the burden. With a renewed spirit, and temporary time away, the father was able to approach the problem with a fresh perspective and fix the problem. Author Cheri Fuller says, “With their innocence and sincerity, children are some of God’s greatest prayer warriors around.”

Even as a Sunday school teacher who teaches chil-dren the importance of talking with God regularly, I still forget to turn to prayer first in difficult situations. We have a tendency to try to control a situation and fix it ourselves. I was reminded of this as I explained to my son how worried I was about a troubled friend and shared my frustrations at failing to “fix” the friend’s problem. His first response was, “Did you pray about it?” When we teach our children to “take it to the Lord in prayer” (as the popular hymn goes) and we pray with them, we are giving them a great gift. John 15:7 says: “If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.”

I pray that taking it to the Lord in prayer becomes the first response of all God’s children.

Ramblings from Riane

One of my recent devotionals talked about being utensils for the Lord and how we should keep our-selves polished for when He calls us to do something. 2 Timothy 2:21 says, “If you keep yourself pure, you will be a special utensil for honorable use. Your life will be clean, and you will be ready for the Master to use you for every good work.” It was a good re-minder to pay attention to our impurities – lying, lust, short-tempers, laziness, etc. – and be sure to polish them and be ready for God to use us to do honorable work for Him.

Regional Disciples Women's Pray and Play Day April 18, 9:30 am - 12:30 pm Silverton, Oregon

Theme: "Get a Clue" - a time to play and pray with the idea of finding the clues that God is present in our lives and the world.

All women are invited to attend. Registration forms and bus sign-up sheet are available at the Information Center.

Baskets of Love Many couples with newborn babies are so busy! Some may not know many people within our church family or would rather not have a baby shower here at the church.

The Caring Ministry, as part of the church family, would like to offer these families a Basket of Love. These baskets would include handmade gifts as well as new baby items.

The Caring Ministry Team would love to gather do-nations for these baskets. If you have items you would like to donate or have questions, please contact Kim Resch or Michelle Gorman.

Young Married Couples with Children Sunday, April 12 5:30 pm, meet at the church We are dining out at a Mexican restaurant. Meet at the church at 5:30 pm and for carpooling at 5:40 pm. Child care is available.

Cyclone Pam Just a few days ago, Cyclone Pam, a category 5 storm (200-250mph wind) made landfall in the remote loca-tion of the Pacific Island Nation of Vanuatu, com-pletely destroying or causing significant damage to homes, buildings, and hospitals. Many rural commu-nities that were impacted by the storm are inaccessi-ble.

Roughly 260,000 people live in Vanuatu. At least eight people have died and thousands are displaced. Those numbers are expected to rise as the communi-cation infrastructures with the 83 islands are repaired and more information emerges.

The main objective now is to get first responders into Vanuatu and begin the humanitarian operation, focus-ing on providing medical aid, food, water and shelter. Week of Compassion's partner, ACT Alliance, is co-ordinating with local and international partners as well as the government of Vanuatu for a response.

Week of Compassion will continue to work with our partners to provide immediate and long-term recov-ery support in the upcoming days and months. Week of Compassion stands in solidarity with our sisters and brothers in the Pacific, and we seek your prayers for the people of Vanuatu impacted by this storm.

Rebuilders’ Fieldtrip Tuesday, April 28 Rebuilders is hosting a tour of Bob’s Red Mill in Mil-waukie. Following the private tour we will enjoy lunch and shopping for their products at their store.
