Bites of Bread from Bob “On a scale of one to ten, what is your level of pain?” Many have had that question asked of us by nurses and doctors. The scale goes all the way from “hurts just a little” or some of the time to extreme pain that allows you to think of nothing else.

If you are like me, that is not always the easiest ques-tion to answer. For one, you wouldn’t have bothered going to the doctor if there wasn’t some discomfort. (Who wants to be around all those sick people anyway and if you are really sick leav-ing the house is a major endeavor.) Even when you are in extreme pain, it is hard to compare your pain with someone else’s pain. I have never given birth or passed a kid-ney stone. My pain may be a eight for me, but how did it compare to the eight of a soldier who has just lost a limb from an IED or a child with appendicitis or a battered woman with broken ribs…to the pain of Christ on the cross? Those are pains that I can only imagine.

Pain is attention-getting. The greater it is the harder it is to ignore. Pain moves us into action. I remem-ber the story of the old hound dog howling on the porch. When someone asked why he was howling, the answer was, “He is lying on a pitch fork and is just too lazy to move.”

We need to experience a certain amount of pain to put us into action. Pain is a motivation to change (whether we are talking about physically, spiritually, emotionally or relationally). While most of us aspire to get to level two where we can “function normally,” level one is of no interest to me (“No pain”). Lord, give me enough pain that I feel the need to make the changes needed in my life and in the world.

God Bless, Pastor Bob

“Lord, give me enough pain that I

feel the need to make the changes needed in my life.”

Our Praise Team Serving Others The fourth Wednesday of every month finds the FCC Praise Band (AMPT) at the UGM (Union Gospel Mission) leading songs and worship. Encouraged and led by Billy Strehlow, the band has been doing this since October of last year. The worshippers may number from 25-100 and come from all walks of life.

“It’s an awesome opportunity to see God work with these broken lives,” says Billy, who also is the lead guitarist. Worship time is from 7:00-7:30 pm and many nights the time will go over as men of all ages and stages of life linger for prayer, a kind word, or a warm handshake or hug from the band members.

Chris Dyer appreciates the chance to be offered the opportunity for a challenge to outside the box or com-fort zone. As the base player for AMPT, he keeps the baseline proceeding to fill out the songs and give them depth and fullness.

Using his electric guitar to add a dimension of the ethereal, Cameron Hill allows the music to speak for him to the UGM crowd. And the band’s newest member, Gary Lyon, adds that important rhythm and beat with the conga drums.

Being at the Mission monthly, ministering to the men, and providing communion, gives Brian Smith, acoustic guitar and vocals, a chance to be grateful for God’s abundances in his own life. “When we are fin-ished and leaving for the night, I see the men getting ready for bed and I am so glad to have a home to go to,” says Brian.

The Wednesday night session also doubles as practice for the band for FCC’s 9:30 am worship. Vocalists include Keri Lazarus, Julie Towery, Doug & Lorna Johnson.

Billy and the band spend time every week praying for and considering the men from the Mission. Some have been moved to come to the Sunday 9:30 am worship to hear the band, be touched by the message from Pastor Bob, and spend time in God’s presence.

AMPT is blessed and grateful for this opportunity to be representatives for the Church. Please keep their ministry efforts and the men of the Mission in your prayers.

Lorna Johnson

Children and Youth A Little Light from Laurie On the way to work this morning, I caught a glimpse of a breathtaking sunrise from my rearview mirror. Ribbons of pink gracefully appeared in the sky as a golden halo pushed the fog from the mountains. It was difficult looking ahead of me as I tried to watch the ever-changing dance of colors behind me. I’ve been told that in life, it’s hard to move forward if you are always looking back, or living in the past. This is very true while driving, of course, but also very true with life. I can’t help but reflect on the many milestones that will be celebrated at church and home this month and next without shedding a tear for how fast time has gone by (baptisms, Mother’s Day, a baby parade, Pentecost, Memorial Day, Teacher’s Appreciation and then Graduation and Promotion Sunday). I realize that God granted us beautiful memories, but He has also promised a brilliant future. Knowing that sunrise was behind me helped me smile around the bend in front of me. But, if I continue to watch the scene of my past life, or the view behind me, I might miss what He has planned in front of me. So even though it’s bittersweet to watch “my” church kids finish Pastor’s Class and go on to be baptized, or my 5th graders promote out of the children’s program and into the youth, or even our own middle son as he graduates from high school, I know that God has a brilliant future planned for each and every one of them. That’s worth celebrating! COMING UP: May 10: Mother’s Day, Baby Parade, Baptisms 17: Observation of Pentecost, Baptism 24: Memorial Sunday, JYF activity 31:Teacher Appreciation, Service Sunday, Youth Sunday, Bread of Life Café 9:00 am, 10:00 Worship June 7: Promotion Sunday, Senior graduation banquet TBA: 5th Grade promotion trip (Teacher Appreciation profiles will continue in the next newsletter.) Cherish the memories; embrace the future! Laurie

Ramblings from Riane “Your eye is a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is good, your whole body is filled with light.” – Matthew 6:22

I recently read this Bible verse in one of my daily de-votionals and thought it was worth sharing. We com-monly think of an eye as something good, not bad. However, it comes down to our perception and how we interpret what we see. It is far too easy to jump to conclusions and make judgments about a person or a situation. Our eyes can see incorrectly due to a lack of understanding. Is it possible that you may have a “bad eye” at times? It can be hard to catch ourselves in the act of bad perception, but recognizing when we draw negative conclusions before gathering accurate information and choosing to think positively can help us break that cycle. The habit of seeing with a “bad eye” is a challenge I am sure many of us struggle with, myself included. However, like many bad hab-its, a “bad eye” can be broken. Calendar of Events: • May 10 – Mother’s Day! No Youth Group • May 17 – Youth Group (Possible filming for

Youth Sunday off-site) • May 24 – Memorial Day Weekend • May 31 – YOUTH SUNDAY (Combined wor-

ship service at 10:00 am, youth meet at 8:00 am) • June 7 – Graduating Seniors Banquet at Annette’s

in West Salem at 12:30 pm

**Please check email regularly for important updates regarding Youth Sunday**

Note to parents: Youth Sunday is May 31 and we are spending Sunday School time planning, prepar-ing, filming, etc. We would love all the youth to be involved and encourage their attendance during Sun-day School. If they are unable to attend Sunday School, connect with me and we will definitely find ways for them to get involved! Blessings, Riane
