Pastors CornerThe spirit of the Lord God is upon me,

because the Lord has anointed me; he has

sent me to bring good news to the op-

pressed, to bind up the broken-hearted, to

proclaim liberty to the captives, and re-

lease to the prisoners. -- Isaiah 61:1

(from a reading for 3 Advent, Dec 14)

As I write this, we are in Day 3. It feels like time is

now being measured from the announcement of the

Grand Jurys decision in the case of Officer Darren Wil-

sons shooting of Michael Brown. Violence continues to

erupt in our city, although thankfully not to the extent it

did on Night 1. Businesses in Ferguson burning, Police

in riot gear, nonviolent protesters halting traffic on the In-

terstate, an angry mob hurling rocks and bottles. I sus-

pect these images will haunt us for weeks to come. In re-

sponse to the events in our city we find ourselves angry,

    sad, confused.

We are in the season of Advent. We await the comingof Christ. But, as our Gospel readings during this season

remind us, this is not passive waiting. Christ was, is, and

is to come. Jesus was here and hes coming back. In the

meantime its up to us to be Jesus hands and feet in this

world. Yes, Jesus said that the passage from Isaiah 61

quoted above was about himthat he had come to bring

good news to all who suffer. As his disciples, thats also

our job. People who are angry and acting-out, people wedont understand or even like these are Jesus beloved

Upcoming EventsSt Francis Men and Women to Meet at ODells

    Separately!

ODells Pub, across from the Parish House on South Central, is the chosen location

for the meetings of the Mens Group and the Womens Group this month. Here are

    the particulars:

Mens Group: Saturday, December 6th, at 1 p.m. Come along and bring a friend if

    youd like.

Womens Group: Wednesday, December 10that 12:30

p.m. Theres been a difficulty in finding an evening

time during December. The Crafters, who overlap

somewhat with the Womens Group, have invited all

women of the parish and any friends or newcomers, to

come to lunch at ODells on Wednesday during the

regular crafters time. Just to be sure we have enough seats, please tell Della Hosutt

or Sally Hader if you can attend.

Christmas @ St. Francis: Getting There is Half the Fun!

There are three events coming up early in December that are key pieces of keeping

Christ in Christmas and having a good time with St. Francis. Although two of the

events are sponsored by the Youth Group and the other sponsored by the Choir, all

three events are open to, welcoming to, and actually in need of other people in the

congregation. Please come! Enjoy your holidays and lend some love to others:

    December 3rd

: @ the Parish House. 7:00 p.m. The Youth Group will lead any gift

wrappers in helping to transform the mountain of black-bagged gifts

currently in Pastor Sallys office into mountains of brightly wrapped

packages for clients of Agape House. This is a lot of fun and while

artistic talent is a lovely addition, it is not required! Paper, tape and

    scissors provided.

    December 7th

    : @ Christ Church Cathedral, 6:00 p.m. St. Fran-

cisChoir will join other choirs in the diocese to present a lovely and

sacred Advent Festival of Lessons and Carols. If you have never at-

tended this liturgy, please come along. There are plenty of non-choir St.

Francis people to drive with and sit with. The choir would love your

support, and you will love this ceremony.

Welcome to Our Deacon - Rebecca Barger

At the Diocesan Convention in November, the highlight was the ordination ofsix people to the order of Deacons. One of those, Rebecca Barger, has been as-

signed to St. Francis Eureka. She started her ministry with us on Sunday, Novem-ber 30th, on the first Sunday of Advent.

Rebecca has become well known to our vicar and to Michael Booker and Kath-leen McDonald who studied with her in the Episco-

pal School for Ministry (ESM) community of the

    Theological Formation program.

Here are a few things that will help you to knowsomething about Rebecca before you really get to

    work with her:

Rebecca trained and worked as a radiation on-cology technologist until she and Phil, her husbandof 25 years, decided she would stay home with theirtwo children. During the kids school years, churchwork became an important second focus in Re-

beccas life, and a place to grow in experience andcommitment to the servant ministry. Her two chil-dren now in college, Rebecca enrolled in ESM andshortly after began the discernment process, sup-

ported by her home parish of St. Martins. Her final step before ordination was a six-month field placement at St. Pauls Carondelet.

Please do yourself a favor and introduce yourself to Rebecca Barger, our newdeacon. We are indeed lucky to have her here!

Note: Please remember to wear your nametag upstairs and down. It will help

her to learn all of us quickly.

    Online Prayer Resources

On November 30th, Michael Booker presented information at the Adult Forumabout praying the Daily Office. Here are some of the key online resources that hementioned.

The Book of Common Prayer(multiple editions from different coun-tries):justus.anglican.org/resources/bcp/

    The 175th Convention of the

    Episcopal Diocese of Missouri

Thats an elegant mouthful! No wonder most of the people who were there, includ-ing St. Francis Vicar, two delegates, and parish administrator, refer to it just as

    convention.

The two days of diocesan convention this year were full of tradition, of prayer, work, discussion, catching up with old friends, and some nutritious, practical, and

reasonably priced meals. No boondoggles on this trip to Cape Girardeau, Missouri!

    Some of the highlights:

A grand opening Eucharist surrounding the ordination of six new deacons in

the diocese. Frequent, passionate discussions about the churchs role in civil, social con-flict, especially the current one in Ferguson

Election of clergy and lay members to important diocesan leadership commit-

    tees.

Presentations, discussions, and ballots on resolutions to our diocesan canons.

Presentations on prayer, discipleship, and mission in our communities.

Great music, good snacks, lots of fun.

At St. Francis next annual meeting, well elect two more delegates for the 176thdi-

    ocesan convention. Lucky delegates!

    Eureka Food

    Pantry Needs

Because of your generosity, thered wagon for the local FoodPantry continues to be full-to-overflowing. Many of ourneighbors continue to need assis-tance getting through each monthwith enough food for their fami-lies. Items that are filling andnourishing along with fresh foodsthat our abundant St. Francis

garden could provide in the sum-mer are primary needs.

However, with the holiday sea-son upon us and our thoughts turnto traditional foods, special good-ies, "comfort foods" in the coldmonths......lets also considersome of the following: canned

    pumpkin for

pies, cookiemixes, choco-lates, packagedcookies, cakemixes, colorfulholiday candies, etc. And to go with these...... hotchocolate packages, coffee, teas. These may be items just not pos-

sible to enjoy while on a tightbudget.

As always, all non-perishablefoods are welcomed and distrib-uted - from one small can to large

packages. Paper items (tissues,TP, etc.) and toiletries (soaps, shampoos, sanitary supplies) areso helpful as food stamps do not

apply to these. Thank you foryour continued kindness and car-

    ing to our community.

    Usher Ministry

Bob Smith, who chairs the Ushers Ministry at St. Francis, likes to use the titleHead Husher since part of the ushers job is to keep the choir and altar party quiet

once the prelude has begun and the doors are open to let latecomers rush inside. But the important job of the usher is more than that. Youll see the ushers:

+ Greeting (or re-greeting) people as they enter the worship space, and handing

    them a service bulletin

+ Helping worshipers to find a seat

+ Making sure that the children and their teachers are back with the congrega-tion during the Passing of the Peace

+ Taking up the weekly collection

+ Carrying forward the gifts of bread and wine and gifts in the collection plate

+ Assisting the children with the red wagon of offerings

+ Organizing the flow of communicants and making sure the Vicar knows ifsomeone seated needs to have communion brought to the seat

At present, we do not have an usher scheduled for the 8 a.m. service. More ushersare needed for the 10:15 a.m. service. If you would like to help out with thisministry, please see Bob Smith or Pastor Sally. Currently all of our ushersare men, but it doesnt have to stay that way!

    Kathleen McDonald

    Food and Alcohol

As you know, the Masons do not allow alcoholic beverages in the Lodge. But

some of our excellent cooks put spirits in their sauces and holiday cookies. Is that

OK to serve at the Lodge?

Please be considerate of those among us who are recovering from alcoholism.

If you bring a dish that has uncooked alcohol in it, please label it clearly as contain-

ing alcohol. For instance, if you bring rum balls to share, please put a sign by them

    that says contains alcohol.

Thank you for your sensitivity to those who suffer from the disease of alco-

holism and who are working a program of recovery.

love and serve them. Being a Christian isnt easy. But its worth it.

We wait for the Lord, actively and hopefully. Thanks be to God.

In order to be more inviting to the youngest among us, its time to give the play

space at the Lodge a much needed makeover. Over the next several weeks, well be

    Consider This

The light of the sun on which our lives depend seems in short supply dur-

ing winter days. Darkness in daytime feels uncomfortable for many of

us, and it is a challenge to live our active daily lives. This poem by Irish

author John ODonohue reminds us that the dark is essential for the light

to be, and that much of the light we long for in the sun is there in the suns Creator,

always. Here are a few of the verses of this profoundly peaceful blessing to guide us

    through the Advent waiting.

    Light cannot see inside things.

    That is what the dark is for;

    Minding the interior,

    Nurturing the draw of growth

    Through the places where death

In its own way turns into life.

That our thoughts may be true light,

Finding their way into wordsWhich have the weight of shadow

To hold the layers of truth.

When we look into the heart,

May our eyes have the kindness

    And reverence of candlelight

And when we come to search for God,

Let us first be robed in night,

Put on the mind of morning

To feel the rush of light

    Spread slowly inside

The color and stillness of a found world.

    Recipe of the Month

FABIO'S EASY CHICKEN DINNERRecipe by Fabio Viviani

    Yield: 2 servingsIngredients:

12 to 14 baby red potatoes, cleaned3 large carrots, peeled2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzlingkosher salt and fresh ground black pepper2 lemons3 sprigs fresh oregano1 sprig fresh thyme

2 cloves garlic, minced2 chicken breast halves, bone-in, skin-on3/4 cup chicken broth

    Method:

    Preheat oven to 350F.

    Cut the potatoes in half.

Cut the carrots into pieces about the same size as the halved potatoes.

In a medium bowl, toss the vegetables with the 2 tablespoons of olive oil and salt

and pepper to taste. Set aside while you prepare the chicken.Cut 2 thin slices of lemon, and cut the remaining lemon into 6 thick slices.

Pull the oregano leaves from the stems and roughly chop them. Discard the stems.

Pull the thyme leaves from the stems. Combine with the minced garlic, and discard

    the stems.

Slide your finger under the chicken skin to separate the skin from the meat.

Place one thin lemon slice under the skin of each chicken breast.

Follow with the garlic-thyme mixture and then the oregano.

Reposition the skin so that it's covering as much meat as possible.Drizzle each chicken breast with a little more olive oil. Season with a pinch of salt

    and pepper.

On one side of a roasting pan, place the thick lemon slices side by side and touch-

    ing.

Place the chicken on the bed of lemon slices so that it does not touch the bottom of

    the pan.

Add the prepared vegetables to the other side of the pan.

Pour the chicken stock over the vegetables and around the chicken.

Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the chicken and vegetables are fully cooked.

Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.

    Treasurers Commentary October 2014

Our plate income continues to be below budget, but this loss is currently beingsurpassed by the amount of interest from our DIT investments. Committee requestshave been submitted for the 2015 fiscal year. Results from Consecration Sunday re-flect 44 pledging units and regular contributors for a total of $104,961 in expected

pledge and regular giving income, which reflects a 3% decrease over 2014.

    OTHER MATTERS FOR THE COMMITTEE:

The Finance Committee will meet in early December to review the results ofConsecration Sunday and proposed budget for 2015.

    Respectfully submitted,

    Suzanne
