Godmade us alive together in Christ Ephesians 2:4-5

This morning the earth smells like

spring. The sound of birds, praising the

promise of new life, fills the air. At St.

Francis we too are full of new life. We are growing because we focus on

Christ -- on our care for those in need, on our trust in God, on our common

life. Our mission statement sums up what we are about at St. Francis:

Growing in Service, Growing in Faith, Growing in Christ, Come Grow with

Us!Twice over its 20-year history St. Francis has been where we are

todayattendance in the 50s on Sundays -- and within a year of meeting

that milestone attendance had returned to the upper-30s/lower-40s range.

For almost all of its history St. Francis has been in the range of 35-40 in

worship on Sundays. This time we are changing that pattern. This time we

    will continue to grow.

Growth is inherently unsettling. Long-established ways of doing

things no longer apply. With the rearranged worship space, even something

as simple as finding our usual seat is no longer possible! St. Francis is not

the church it was 2 years ago, thanks to the new faces, new ministries, and

new energy thats been introduced. St. Francis wont be the church it is

    today in 2 years time.

Change is anxiety-provoking. Old ways no longer work, but new

ways may not yet be established. Often during periods of growth theres an

increase in conflicts; feelings escalate. Thats a natural, normal reaction to

uncertainty. Its likely that well see this at St. Francis

more complaints, strong feelings over seemingly minor is-

sues. Lets please be gentle with each other when this hap-

pens. Lets openly talk with one another about what were

thinking and feeling. Honest, open communication is the

best antidote to anxiety. Gods mission for the church is to

reconcile us to God and one another. We can practice that

within our faith community through careful listening and re-

spectful talking. We will love one another through the rough

patches. Successfully resolving conflicts will make our rela-

    tionships that much stronger.

When were made alive in Christ we grow and bloom

in unpredictable and unplanned ways. We are trusting in the

Holy Spirit at St. Francis and that means were in for a wild

and glorious ride. The Spirit blows where it wills, outside

human control. With Christ before and beside us, our future

will be grand. But it is unknown. We walk by faith, not by

sight, trusting in Gods never-failing goodness.

    Upcoming EventsMinistry Fair, March 11th

    Something Just for You!

St. Francis second annual Ministry Fair will

be here soon. A ministry fair is a one-stop shopping

experience for members, new and old, to learn more

about ministry opportunities currently available in the

parish. Knowing each of us is called to do something

that both advances the kingdom of God and also, in

some way, makes our hearts sing, ministry leaders

have set up an opportunity to explain what we do, and

to invite new members to join in.

Many members of the congregation have ques-

tions about parish ministries that they never seem to

find time to ask: Do you have to take a test to be a lec-

tor? How can you ever remember what goes where

when youre setting up the altar? How often do we do

highway cleanup and how hard is it? Can the craft-

challenged go to Crafternoon? Can the prayer-

challenged participate in Monday Prayer or RSVP?

What is RSVP? And whats with Miss Stevie carrying

wine to church in brown paper bags? If these or otherquestions about the ministries of St. Francis have

arisen in your soul, theres a place to find the answers

and a place to see if maybe you are called to one or

more of them. Plan to attend the annual Ministry Fair

on Sunday, March 11th during the adult forum session.

    Mardi Growl, 2012

Who says Soulard has it all? On Sunday,

February 19th, Eureka held its second annual Mardi

    Growl party and pet

    parade, and St. Fran-

    cis wasthere.

    The

    Blessed

    Payday Loan Interest Rates

    Missourians for Responsible Lending is

a statewide effort to end 400% interest rate

    loans.

Right now, payday lenders in Missouri

are charging an average of 444% interestandcan legally charge as high as 1950%!

Missouri has more payday lenders than

    Starbucks, McDonalds & Walmarts combined!

Together, we can change this through a

citizens initiative on the 2012 ballot, asking

voters to say yes to capping the rate of pay-

day, car title, and other high cost loans at 36%.

You can help restore the financial secu-

rity of Missouri working families, seniors, veter-

ans, and others by publicly endorsing the cam-

paign to say that 400% interest is too high.

LentSome more thoughts about Lent, continued from last months note about this holy season, with

    some specific suggestions this time.

Rest. Benedict Reid, monk of St. Gregorys Abbey in Three Rivers, Michigan (and formerly ab-

bott of that community) contends that sheer exhaustion is a major spiritual issue of the age. A

frequent spiritual counsel to those making retreat at the abbey? Sleep for twenty-four hours.

Then come talk to me. The parenthesis-time offered by Lent can be a gift in our over-

    adrenalized existence.

Read. Scripture is a norm for Lenten reading, but anything scripture-inspired also fits the season. I

typically read biography during Lent, and I can commend Stanley Hauerwass Hannahs Child:

A Theologians Memoir and Eric Metaxas Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy. I have

read them both, and they make for excellent spiritual nourishment.

Give up something good, for the sake of something better. I am not of the mind that Lent

should hurtthough I do think simplicity is a byword for the season. The thoughtful simplify-

ing we might do during Lent can spill over into the rest of the year, and living more simply can

effect the conversion of life to which we are continually called. What might one give up?

Elaborately prepared meals, television time, computer time, shopping timethat sort of thing.

And for what reason might one give up such things? Not so that it will hurtbut so there

might be time to do something better. (Like Rest orRead, above. Like Pray orRepent orBe

    Together, below.)

Pray. Its obviousand it must be said. Lent gives a good season to rest in Gods presence, alone

and together, and to storm the throne of God with the hopes and needs of this aching world.

Repent. Too often we get caught up in the listing of sins without dealing with root issues in our

broken lives. Lent says, Deal with them. And accept the new possibilities for life offered by

God in Christ Jesus! Lent is not about beating ourselves up, as if God might be impressed by

our doing so. Lent is about naming root issues of sinand moving on to celebrate forgiveness.

The Rites of Reconciliation, beginning on page 446 of the Prayer Book, give some structure

for considering these root issues of human sin. You might even consider arranging to use one

of these two rites. I know, I know. Private confession has many negative connotations

around it. But it is a grace offered within our churchnot required. It is a grace that goes un-

    der-utilized.

Be Together. Too often the fragmented manner of living in our time leaves precious littletime to enjoy the benefits of a community, of life together. So take the time. Renew

friendships. Write letters. Drink coffee. Sit in the den with family. Invite friends over

for one of those simple meals you will cook during the season.

Above all, have a good and holy Lent, in the community of believers.

    Tim Phillips of Assured Automotive

    19 West 5th

    St., Eureka

Tim Phillips, owner of Assured Automotive,

has once again provided a significant donation to the

Vicars discretionary account. I use the Vicars dis-

cretionary account to provide emergency funds forpeople in crisis. Typically the money is given to peo-

ple outside the congregation of St. Francis.

Tim Phillips periodically gifts each pastor of

the various churches in Eureka with a check to be used

for helping people in dire need within the community.

Tim serves as an example to all of us of what it means

to be Christ in the world.

Tim asks for nothing in return. In fact, hes

somewhat embarrassed to be recognized for his gifts. So the following suggestion comes from me, Pastor

Sally, not from Tim: When you need work done on

your car, please consider taking it to Assured Automo-

tive at 19 West 5thSt. in Eureka. Its a way we can

support Tim for all hes done on behalf of our

    neighborhood and Gods world.

    Consider this:

    The term repurpose

doesnt show up yet in Words

online dictionary, but I think it

should. In fact, it should rank

right up there with the other

    green re- words like reduce,

reuse and recycle. After all, the

    Style Network, HGTV and St.

Francis Church use repurpose all the time.

On the Style Network, to repurpose an item

is to transform it, to take it off the shelf of old lack-

luster stuff and give it new life as something else.

One can, for example, take an unused necklace and

repurpose it as a purse handle, giving a whole new

life cycle to both the necklace and the purse. Repur-posing the one saves both, at least for a while, from

    the trash bin.

The knitters, quilters, card-makers and other

crafters at our Wednesday Crafternoon know all

about repurposing. Following a timeless tradition of

using what you have, they are making a quilt for the

church. Many quilts are made from good cloth re-

purposed from out-grown, out-worn clothing. Ours

is made from some of that and some favorite fabricscraps from each of us. Each of us (according to the

extent of our talents) contributes old fabric, old

skills, and new energy to create a work of art and a

    piece of comfort.

The quilt is still a work in progress, but that

same group has created another icon of repurposing.

And its cute enough for the Style Network! Im

talking about the Purina feed bags collected by ani-

mal-raising members of our congregation which are

emptied, cleaned, twisted, turned, sewn, given han-

dles and bases. Voila! The bags designed to carry

animal chow have been repurposed as handle-bags

for people to carry their groceries, their gym

clothes, their shopping, or whatever they need to

carry. We sell the bags in the Blessed Creatures

Boutique to help raise money to fund our ministries.

Ive been thinking about those bags a lot

lately. I am so proud of them and what they mean

about the coming together of St. Francis mem-

bers ministries! A bunch of old feed sacks have

been transformed into cheerful, useful tote bags

that will have new life way beyond the feeding of

    livestock.

I was thinking of the re-purposed feedbags

as a metaphor for the other transformations in our

parish life. Making those bags is exciting and its

fun. Theres real joy in sharing the finished prod-

uct with the community. And of course its way

cool to take each $5 bill we earn and deposit them

in our accounts to fund other ministries. But some

of the repurposing, the transformation of those

bags, is hard and even dirty work. Cleaning thebags is dusty, outdoor work and turning the bags

inside out and back again takes more strength than

most of us have. Cooperation and sharing of tal-

    ents makes this simple-but-not-easy transformation

possible. It also makes the process fun.

Pastor Sallys sermon about change (6

    Epiphany, particularly pp 5-6 http://

    www.stfranciseureka.com/sermons.html ) re-

minded us that it can be more comfortable, easier,

to leave things the way that they are. It can be a

lot of work to take the gifts we share with one an-

other and share them with more and more people.

In tote bag terms, it might be uncomfortable to

wash the dust off of our ways and to turn our proc-

esses inside out and then right them again. Its

undoubtedly less comfortable to be the thing trans-

formed than it is to be the one doing the repurpos-

ing, the one who has a plan and is acting on it. But

it is the thing repurposed, the thing transformedthat has beautiful, practical new life.

It takes energy, planning, creativity and

work to repurpose a feed bag or a congregation.

Good thing we have God on our side!

Please Help Prevent Shaken Baby Syndrome

Weve all heard on the news about babies who are seriously injured or die from shaken baby syndrome.

Wool Gatherings, The Wallach House, 510 N. West Ave, Eureka, MO 63025, has submitted the following ap-

peal for help in trying to prevent these horrible situations. If you would like to help, contact Wool Gatherings

directly or perhaps talk with Kathleen McDonald of St. Francis Crafters Group, for information.

We at Wool Gatherings have recently gotten to know Kara Rieger and Bill Wei-

shaar. They had the unspeakable happen in July, 2011 when they lost their 13-month old

daughter, Lily, after she was shaken at a home day care in Eureka. Kara, Bill, and Lily's aunt

Kathy, came to Wool Gatherings to learn to knit so they can make hats for a project called

"Click for Babies" Period of Purple Crying Campaign.

The "Click for Babies" project is a grass-roots campaign operating in a number

of states the United States and Canada. The project seeks to spread awareness about the Pe-riod of Purple Cryingthe first five months of life when the amount of infant crying can

become frustrating and overwhelming to caregivers. The campaign's ultimate goal is to pre-

vent Shaken Baby Syndrome. You can learn more at clickforbabies.org.

Wool Gatherings has decided to help Lily's parents by enlisting all the knitters and

crocheters we know to help make purple baby hats. We are stocking a variety of purple

yarns, we have baby hat patterns free of charge, and we are giving a 30% discount on all

yarns purchased for charity knitting. Wool Gatherings will also serve as a drop-off site for the

    baby hats.

    Here's what you can do:

Knit or crochet as many newborn baby hats as you can. The hats need to be at

least 50% purple -- any shade.

Spread the word to all the knitters and crocheters you know.

Drop off completed hats at Wool Gatherings between now and November, 2012.

Wool Gatherings will get the hats to Lily's parents who will give them to the National

Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome to distribute the hats (along with information about the Pe-riod of Purple Crying and Shaken Baby Syndrome) to hospitals which will give them to as

many families of babies born in November as possible.

Thank you for your participation and support!

    Our Childrens Reflections on

God and the GospelWhat is the Holy Spirit made of?

A whole bunch of other spirits.

    A dove.

What are special works that God has for us to do?

Clean up. Loving people. Do what your parents tell you to do. Do what God tells you to do. Be good to your best friend. I have a best

friend who I be good to. Go to church each Sunday. Go because you celebrate the feast of Jesus. My pants keep falling down. Theyre sup-

    posed to fit.

What does it mean to fish for people? Possibly looking for people to be your friend. Give people food. Getting people to talk to. Jesus looks for people, poor people, to help

them. Everyone talks in public, once theyre my

age. Even Presidents go to church.

    What sorts of things

does Jesus teach? To walk and tofish. He taught the Gos-pel.

    Who is your neighbor?

The Shirmishes. George, but wedont know the rest of

    his name.

Whom do we love? Friends, family, dogs, God, Jesus, our-

selves. In 2ndgrade we learned the word JOY

means Jesus, Others, Yourself. I lost track of time last night while trying to

make bricks. When our dog dies my dad says were go-

ing to redo our wooden floors. And he barfed two times.

    HOLY HUMOR

    During these serious and troubled

times, people of all faiths should remember

    these four great religious truths:

    1. Muslims do not recognize Jews as

God's Chosen People.2. Jews do not recognize Jesus as the Mes-

    siah.

    3. Protestants do not recognize the Pope as

the leader of the Christian world.

    4. Baptists do not recognize each other at

    the liquor store.

Saturday was all about the practical, the

    logical, sequential, whole-to-part, crank-it-out plan-

ning work, setting goals, priorities and action plans

for our little piece of Gods Kingdom on Earth. It

was exciting, effective, efficient and enjoyable.

Thanks to Kristie, to Pastor Sally, to Bob and

Paddy, our Wardens and warm, comfy thanks to our

    chef, Steve Strathearn.

Where can you learn about the goals? Anyor all of these venues will have more details:

    Bishops Committee Retreat February17th and 18th, 2012.

Once every year the new and returning mem-

bers of the Bishops Committee meet with the Vicar

to spend time in reflection, prayer and planning for

the coming year. Although the Bishops Committee

does not have tons and tons of work to do, it is help-

ful to the committee members, the congregation and

the vicar if we work together effectively, efficientlyand enjoyably. The time spent in retreat is worth it!

On Friday evening, March 17, the Bishops

Committee met at the Parish House where Kristie

Lenzen led us in prayer, reflection and sharing of

some of our spiritual journeys. It was a great time for

new and returning members to know and care for one

    another more deeply.

    Prayer for St. Francis

We pray for the witness, renewal, and growth of our parish family. Living

God, infuse us with your love. Enable us to proclaim the good news of Je-

sus Christ to all whom we meet through our actions, our thoughts, our

words. Make St. Francis' Church a place of invitation and welcome, a safe

harbor and a beacon of the light of Christ. Amen.
