St. Francis’ Episcopal Church is a mis- sion of the Episcopal Diocese of Missouri. The Chalice is the newsletter of St. Francis’ Episcopal Church, Eureka, and is published at least 10 t imes per year. Submissions for The Chalice are due approximately the 20th of each month and may be e-mailed to the Office at stfranch@sbc global.net. The Chalice St. Francis’ Episcopal Church Eureka MO Pastor’s Corner Pageantry, friendship, betrayal, suf- fering, death, and triumph. Sounds like a great story , doesn’t it ? It is. It’s the story of Jesus ’ final days, the last week of his earthly exis- tence. On Sunday , April 13 we begin with the pageantry of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem amid palm-waving and cries of “hosanna.” W e share in Jesus’ last supper with his intimate associates on Maundy Thursday, April 17. That night we watch an hour with Jesus, knowing that one of his friends has betrayed him and men are on their way to arrest him. Good Friday , April 18, we listen at Je- sus’ tria l, we watch the scourging by the soldiers, we stand among the crowd as his staggers toward Golgotha, carrying the cross. W e sit in stunned silence as Jesus draws his last breath and dies. And on Easter Sunday, April 20, in wonder and astonishment we discover an empty tomb. This Holy Week, April 13-20, there are worship op- portuni ties each day except Saturd ay (see the ar ticle in this issue). Given how busy our lives are, it’ s hard to carve out time to worship at St. Francis’ beyond Sunday morning. But immersing ourselves in worship d uring Holy Week does deepen the meaning of Easter. On Maundy Thursday, as we remember Jesus sharing his last supper with his disciples, we enrich our weekly Eucharist. When we arrive at the empty tomb having experienced the Good Friday despair of the crucifixion and death of Jesus, Easter joy abounds. God’s love is so p owerful, it overcomes death.
