From the Principal’s Desk by Peter Craft

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

We should all be so proud of our students as they shine their lights each and every day at Oaklands Central. Earlier this term, for example, someone observing our secondary students on a school excursion were so impressed by their manners and good behaviour that they paid for the students to have a treat to eat. These students are a perfect example of our school values of respect, responsibility, resilience and being safe. We actively teach these values and each day our students show what these values look like in practical ways. In the extended website version of this report you can find our Positive Behaviour Grid which outlines our expectations of students.

As part of the Positive Behaviour Program we also have a reward system. Students earn merits by attending school each day, wearing uniform, following school rules and applying themselves. We have made minor changes to these rewards. Once a student earns 20 merits they reach bronze level and receive a school pen. At 40 merits they receive a canteen voucher as they reach silver level. Once they reach 70 merits the student receives a gold certificate and is invited to attend the Rewards Day for that semester. The merit count restarts at the end of each semester. To assist your child in their learning encourage them to attend school every day, to come in full uniform, to continually concentrate on learning and to follow our school rules.

This year we are continuing with the Student Family Wellbeing Facilitator (SFWF) at Oaklands Central School in 2020. Each Wednesday Chris works in the school to provide support for students and families. Her role includes providing one on one support for students and working within class or with small groups to develop emotional/social wellbeing. An information letter was recently sent home with further information about this valuable part of our wellbeing program. If you would like your child to have access to our SFWF it is important that you sign and return the permission slip included on the note. If you have any questions please feel free to contact the school.

Next week we are holding our first Whole School Assembly for the year. These are always a great event where we celebrate the achievements of our students. These are community events and I would like to invite all of our parents, grandparents, friends and community to join us to see how our students are shining their lights. It is always encouraging when we have a full hall!

What a busy fortnight we have had. Our wonderful school swimming program concluded. I had the pleasure of attending my first OCS Swimming Carnival. It was great to see the students giving their best and enjoying the day. Every student showed sportsmanship and resilience. Thank you to Miss Elith for organising such a great event.

Last Friday, K-6 participated in their first sport session. The students participated with enthusiasm and showed off their batting and bowling skills in the game “Bin Cricket’. It was very pleasing to see the students encouraging each other.

What’s Happening in 2/3

Last week I visited Moulamein Public School to observe their Phonics Program that is being implemented in their K-2 classes. The program is call Lessons in Phonics Instruction – Diagraphs (LIPI). It is broken into two sections – LIPI 1 and LIPI 2.

LIPI 1 is single sound only and directed towards K/1 students. LIPI 2 is a whole class or small group instructional program that teaches students to write words using digraphs and short/long vowels and directed more towards Years 2/3. It is taught at least 3 times per week but there are optimum benefits when completed daily. Each lesson takes approximately 30 minutes. It includes Phonemic Awareness, Phonics Instruction, Spelling, Handwriting and Grammar. Monitoring of students’ progress is done on a daily basis and students complete an assessment every five weeks.

Both myself and the students of 2/3 are very excited to trial this in our daily Literacy session. If you would like to observe a lesson, please feel free to contact me.

We have had a very busy fortnight.

SWIMMING Students have now finished their swimming sessions which proved successful with students showing off their progress with the carnival last Monday. Well done to all students who participated for their houses. Well done to Innes for taking out Champion House! I was impressed by the level of participation from all secondary students. It really did make the difference in the end!

RAP INDUCTION CAMP Year 11 students travelled to Yanco to join in the RAP Induction Camp for 2020. Students had the opportunity to meet with their coordinating teachers and fellow class mates. Students also socialised with the challenge of trivia on the night they stayed over. Thank you to the staff that supported students attending this opportunity!

RAP SPORTS TRIALS A number of our secondary students participated in the RAP Sports Trials that were held in Barellan on Friday 14th February. Students displayed their skills and competed against students to join the RAP team to compete against other schools. Well done to Jackson for making the lawn bowls side who will compete against Murray High in their first round.

BEST START Year 7 Our Year 7 student will participate in both the BEST START Yr 7 Literacy and Numeracy assessments. These assessments will give teachers a guide as to where students are sitting with their numeracy and literacy skills. Going forward, teachers will use the new progressions to help students grow with their skills and assist with learning across all curricular areas.

Happy Learning!

Students in secondary have settled in well to their studies this term. All students need to have a Casio scientific calculator fx-82AU. The students have access to the online learning program www.mathsonline.com.au which can used at home to revise learning. A limited amount are available for purchase at the school office for $20 each.

Stage 4 Students are working hard on solving problems involving integers (whole positive and negative numbers). They are revising their skills in order of operations using BIDMAS. We will move onto the topic of Indices this week. Ask them the answer to 23 (hint: it’s not 6). We will also spend time this term with fractions and decimals.

Stage 5 The Year 9 students are revising number skills with decimals, fractions and rounding numbers and writing them in scientific notation. The Year 10 students are rising to the challenge of learning about surds and making connections with their knowledge of algebra. Other topics this term include Algebra and Geometry, and despite what you may think we use algebra every day. Farmers use algebra to predict how much fertilizer/seed and chemical they need. Banks use formulas and algebra to calculate your interest and repayments. Predicting and estimating the time you need to get ready to go out is using algebra. If you hold a function you need to work out your costs and profit to decide how much to charge. Working how long to roast a piece of meat is usually calculated at cooking time in minutes per 500g- this is algebra! You’d be surprised when you sit down and think about it, how much mathematics we use every day.

Food Technology This term students are learning about Food Equity and why some countries don’t have access to clean water and the impact of nutrition. We will investigate why access to good food is not always available to everyone in a community. Each week the students will follow a recipe to prepare meals. We aim to have students learn to prepare a variety of ingredients, sweet and savoury, building their confidence in preparing a wide range of recipes from different cultures. I hope you will see the end products and your child gain some increased confidence in the kitchen at home. Students cooked up some tasty omelettes last week. This week the students will be making biscuits to take
